Pros: Skinny, silver, inexpensive Cons: Button on remote is small and hard to read.
"When I was a kid, we didnt have DVD players." I said to my 12-year-old when we brought this home. "How did you get by?" he asked. "Well we played outside, we were kids. It wasn't like it is these days. Then when DVD players did come out they ...

Pros: Design, Picture quality, quiet, PRICE Cons: remote control set up, automatic subtitles
My other cheap Chinese DVD player broke in my room and I needed a quick and cheap replacement. I figured I would give this a try. Experience in using product: I use it for the most basic function...DVDs. I believe that this is what this item is ...

Pros: Quick easy setup/install, small, light, thin , easy movie play as well. Cons: Is this a sign of more things to come. Things might be breaking now.
As like most people here, the price was extremely reasonable $39 at Target on sale. We got the desk just about a year ago, just after Christmas (Jan 2006). It has run pretty well, it is sometimes noisy (we attributed it to some DVD's). The buttons as ...

Doesn't work
by diannesdb ,Jan 29 '07
Pros: None. Cons: Everything, at this point.
Bought it. Brought it home. Took it out of the box. Hooked it up. Put a DVD from a rental place into it. Machine spit it out. Put another DVD into it. Machine spit it out. Tried to close the DVD tray without a DVD in it and it opened right back up again.
Turned it off, disconnected and reconnected everything (just in case I'd somehow made a mistake the first time), went through the same test cycle with the same results.
Checked the documentation enclosed to see if it shed any light on this behavior, no dice. Checked Memorex's website for relevant information, no dice.
Needless to say, this is going back to the store tomorrow.
--
Update 3 days later: Immediately after I had written the above, I fiddled around with the machine some more. For some reason going into the setup menu got the darn thing to work. Yay! I actually got to watch part of a DVD on it!
Unfortunately the next time I tried it, it reverted back to its previous opening/closing behavior. This time I couldn't even get back into the setup menu. So back to the store it went.

Don't buy Memorex DVD players
by rockysullivan ,Dec 13 '07
Pros: Cheap price Cons: Piece of junk
My Memorex DVD player was a little over a year old and hardly used. It worked on the few time I used it. Then one day it just kept spinning the DVD and never loaded it. Memorex makes junk.

Consider Another Product
by wade_tom ,Sep 23 '07
Pros: Trying to think of some.... Cons: Lemon
Within less than 6 months use, remote died (or dvd player does not recognize remote). Good luck finding a universal remote that will work with this product if needed. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for. Won't consider Memorex products in the future.

Short Lifespan
by dramouflage ,Feb 23 '07
Pros: price, appearance Cons: durability, lifespan
I watch approximately 5-6 films a week. At first, this machine did everything I needed it to - it played the film. There were some unusual glitches that other reviewers mentioned regarding subtitles, but that didn't disturb my enjoyment of the film. After six months, I had trouble opening the dvd door whether there was a dvd inside or not. The control panel would read "open" and I would wait a good 3-5 minutes but the door would not open. I tried the remote and the same problem happened. After turning the power on and off, I would occasionally get lucky and the door would open. I'm calling it quits on the machine at this point. Due to its low price, however, I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy a different model.

Sliding tray refused to open a few months after purchase
by tfr888 ,Oct 24 '08
Pros: Price. MP3 decoder. Dolby digital Progressive scan Component video out jack S-video jack Cons: A P.O.S. whose features mean nothing if it won't open up and load a DVD.
This is a cheaply made DVD player. The sliding tray stopped responding to the open/close button a few months after we bought it.

disappointment
by misshedwig ,Feb 04 '05
Pros: Cheap. Cons: Ours stopped being able to read most discs after only 5 months of gentle use.
We bought this DVD player and for the first few months there was only one problem: if you pause it, when you resume the soundtrack is off from the visual and the only way to fix it is to turn the player off and then on again (and lose your place on the DVD, which negates the usefulness of the pause button at all, of course). That was really really annoying, but we put up with it since the player was so cheap.
After about 4-5 months, however, the door wouldn't open on its own. Then after another month, the player wouldn't read most discs, and finally it won't read any discs.
We watch about 2 movies a week on the player and generally treat it well. This should not have happened, especially so soon. All in all, this player was a huge disappointment and a waste of time and money.

Buggy!
by kendalll ,Sep 11 '05
Pros: Cheap, looks ok Cons: Subtitles are very buggy, menu's look lame
So this DVD player does work -- however every time you put in a disc, it defaults to english subtitles no matter what. Ok no big deal I can turn off subtitles. Except this only partially works. On the Team America World Police disc, when you turn off English Subtitles you get French subtitles whenever there is something written on the screen or when a song is being sung. Really irritating!

Horrible
by hcatlin ,Feb 22 '05
Pros: Cheap Cons: Broke quickly
We've owned this player for 2 months and after the first month, it stopped reading discs on the first try. We sit in front of it and open and close, open and close, open and close, trying to get the thing to read the disc. Occasionally it works. However, it never makes it through the whole movie without messing up.
And we have the same audio tracking problem.
I would send in the warranty, but I don't want to be given another one of these horrible machines. Ouch! There goes 35 bucks!

You get what you pay for...
by tsevenut ,Jun 09 '05
Pros: Clear picture, pretty case Cons: Audio/Video tracking is bad, supernatural subtitling.
I'm glad it was cheap. We have experienced the same audio/video tracking problem as well. We also have noticed some weird issues with the subtitles. Every time a DVD is put in, the English subtitles automatically start, regardless of the setup menu choices. The player also seems to show every written item during a movie shown on the screen translated to Spanish (or sometimes French or Japanese. We even got Thai once!) I bought the Memorex because they used to be a good name. Oh well, live and learn, then get a Sony.

Much better than others
by marisolapr ,Aug 02 '05
Pros: Plays MP3, and many formats, progressive scan, CHEAPEST OF THE CHEAPEST. Slim and light. Cons: It is so delicate that sometimes it slides when my son puts a movie.;)
My story begins more than a year ago when I decided to buy a DVD for my toddler (now 3 years old) boy to watch his movies, so I got the cheapest DVD player in Sears: an Apex for 40 bucks... luckily I bought the extended warranty for $10 (I strongly suggest this) and when the Apex started to fail I went to the store and changes it for the second cheapest: this Memorex MVD2042!
I am happy with it, I have not experienced none of the problems listed by the other reviewers, and the main user is a 3 years old kid!!!!! who watches it every day.
My husband even managed to program it so it can read DVDs from around the world, no matter the region. So I am more than happy with a long lasting cheap DVD perfect for my kid.
When it dies I'll get another one.
