Find another player, this on is hairy...
by lf4gt7g ,Jan 24 '06
Pros: Back light was nice.
Cons: Audible hum when turning on, no customer help, no reset button.
I've used mine for about 2 months. It's OK, but not great at all. Hard to organize songs in any order, software is bland and not very useful. Tried to upgrade the Firmware and it died, can't get it to come on, tried every trick in the book. NO response from Memorex service, no reset button yuck.

Received a Sony NW E505 for a present, it's AMAZING!! Super long batteries life, great sound, software at least lets you organize your tunes and albums, it easy to find what you want etc. Stay away from this Memorex.

For cheap I hear the RCA LYRA RD1072 is very good. No back light but pretty solid with decent sound. And using a SD card you can up-grade the memory.

Wouldn't Recommend It
by kciar28 ,Aug 26 '05
Pros: when it worked, it was fine
Cons: the ear buds hurt breaks for no reason
I bought one at Target and had a really hard time getting my computer to recognize the mp3 player. I work 9:00-5:00 and so do the Memorex people (how convenient), so I couldn't get any help from them. Anyway, I finally got it to start downloading music after 2 long nights of working on it. However, once the music was downloaded, the player wouldn't work. I tried flipping the battery over (don't ask me why, I was just starting to lose it at this point), the battery exploded and the mp3 player broke. I brought it back to Target and I foolishly got another Memorex but I got an upgrade, so I thought it would be fine. I was wrong. It's been working great for the past 30 days and then yesterday it just stopped working. I changed the battery (didn't flip this one over ;) but that didn't work, so I am returning it and getting a different brand.

Another one is probably a better value
by dmr02e ,Jan 04 '05
Pros: light, cheap
Cons: USB cable barely detects, hard to change stations
I chose this one bc of the price and look. It's very light but I am also having a problem with the USB. My computer does not detect it and this is the 2nd computer I've tried it on. My brother just bought a different brand and it worked on here so I'm going to exchange mine today. Also, customer service is terrible!

Great Buy, and I know Mp3 players
by poop121 ,Dec 21 '04
Pros: Good sound, great palm-fit, and EXPANDABLE. Neat pictures in a convenient menu. Good battery life.
Cons: Includes bad headphones, isn't as "cool" looking as others. Can't really think of much else....
I have owned this Mp3 player for about a year now, and it still remains to be one of the best in the market. I am soon to get a 512mb sd card, which will add more than 8 cds of music(128 = aprox. 25 songs).
The FM tuner is a bonus, and is a mixed bag. Some stations I get have crisp, clear sound, while others aren't picked up so easily. I really don't use it that much, as I have all the songs I want to listen to on mp3 format.
As far as durability, IT IS GREAT. Many complain about "cheap" plastic and "it doesn't look too durable..." I have dropped it about 3 times(once quite hard), brung it to school about 3 months(that says ALOT), and left it in various extreme conditions(and I think I take good care of it...). It still remains exactly as how I bought it.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT USE THE HEADPHONES THEY GIVE YOU. THEY ARE VERY CHEAP AND HAVE BAD SOUND. Just go get a $10 set of Panasonic, Sony, or Philips earbuds.

Overall: Great buy

Memorex MP3 8500
by akrenzel ,Jan 02 '05
Pros: This device is compact, light weight, and simple to use.
Cons: To get picky, the device is slow going from song to song. Earbuds suck!
I received this MP3 player as a gift and I love it more and more each time I use it. It is so light and simple to use. Installation and transferring songs was very easy to use. I installed my software and transfered songs in about 20 minutes. I read complaints about crappy customer service, but I did not even have to use them, the directions were simple to read. I am very satisfied with the product for the price.

Just OK.
by kim6750 ,Feb 08 '07
Pros: Expandable SD memory.
Cons: Poor FM radio (changes slowly). Cuts off constantly.
This was my first MP3 player. I got it on E-bay for about $45. It is just OK. Most of the songs I downloaded to it will not allow me to turn the player higher than halfway. It constantly turns off. You can barely tap it & it cuts off. Not recommended.

Excellent sound, excellent value
by junebug1701 ,Jan 08 '04
Pros: Easy set up and use, looks like removeable disc to the OS.
Cons: Earbuds too big, vinyl case too tight.
This is a fantastic MP3 player. It weighs almost nothing, no moving parts so it can't skip, backlit display, FM tuner with presets, expandable memory with SD card slot, ergonomically designed for one-handed operation, and runs for 10 hours on a single AAA battery! This is my first portable MP3 player so I can't really compare it to the Lyras, Rios, Ipods etc., but I am really impressed with this tiny gem. So much so that I created a Yahoo group for all Memorex MP3 players:

Great for my first MP3 player
by ufgatorsax ,Jun 26 '04
Pros: Sound quality, Portability and ease of use
Cons: Difficulty programing FM Stations and Big ear buds
This is my first MP3 player and I believe I stole this at the price I bought it for. I found it on sale for $59.00 in a Walmart while on vacation in North Carolina. I love the sound quality and the portability. I like it's ability to add more memory via a memory card. It interfaces well with my Windows XP, it acts like a portable hard-drive, just plug and download. I don't like the difficulty in programing the FM stations nor do like the big ear buds that come with it. Other than that I believe I have a fine value on my hands.

Memorex MP3
by kern0079 ,Apr 26 '04
Pros: Light and cheap.
Cons: Interfacing problems with computers, difficult to program
I would not recommend this products to others unless you are willing to get used to its system. It is slightly difficult to program radio stations into its memory (it does get easier with practice). My computer has issues reading that the player is connected. I have been able to use it but not in the manner that the users manual describes. Once all the bugs are worked out though and you get used to its features it is a great MP3 player for the money.

Cable modem issue- Terrible driver conflict
by jstimpfig ,Apr 14 '04
Pros: Tiny form factor, light weight, decent battery life
Cons: FM tuner setup, always turns the 1st song on.
I too had the USB cable modem issue. Windows XP wouldn't assign the Memorex player a drive letter so I went on Google and saw the review (all upper case) above. Luckily, this system had a network card that worked so I disabled the USB cable modem in Network properties, reset the cable modem and bam the player was identified no problem.

Don't buy this player
by ccfpe ,Feb 23 '04
Pros: none
Cons: it doesn't work and there is no support
Don't buy it! I spent $100 on this player, Memorex MMP8500, and it doesn't work. To get support, I had to dial 4 different phone numbers, then was on hold for 10 minutes, only to get a recording. I tried twice with same result.
I bought it today and I'm taking it back today.
It may work for you, but why take the risk?
Buy anything else.

THIS PLAYER STINKS....WORST ONE OUT THERE! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
by mattliptak ,Feb 05 '04
Pros: NONE
Cons: INCOMPATIBLE SOFTWARE AND NON HELPING CUSTOMER SERVICE
I PURCHASED THIS PIECE OF JUNK BECAUSE THE PRICE WAS RIGHT AND I SAW REVIEWS THAT SAID IT WAS VERY GOOD. FIRST OFF IT IT FLIMSY AND THE OUTER SHEL IS HARD PLASTIC...THE RADIO TUNER IS A WASTE BECAUSE IT WONT MOVE THE STATIONS FAST ENOUGH AND SETTING THE STATIONS IS A MAJOR PAIN. LASTLY AND MOST IMPORTANT..IT IS CURRENTLY NOT COMPATIBLE WITH A CABLE MODEM ..THE DRIVES THEY HAVE OUT THERE CONFLICTS AND MESS THE SYSTEM UP. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY SAID THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM THAT THEY CANNOT FIX RIGHT NOW..THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO UNPLUG ITEMS FROM PORTS AND TRY THE PLAYER OUT...THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS SLOW AND NOT KNOWLEDGEABLE...I TOOK THIS THING BACK AND SPENT A BIT MORE TO BUY A RIO CALI..THAT MAKES THIS PLAYER LOOK LIKE GARBAGE...DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY OR YOUR TIME..SPEND A FEW MORE DOLLARS AND AVOID A POSSIBLE NIGHTMARE!!

Cheap, good sound, arm band holder, GYM WORTHY!
by ctgblue ,Jan 27 '05
Pros: comes with armband holder, rugged
Cons: loses button now and again
Got this for my wife last year for christmas.
Loses a button now and then (we find them), but other than that it has been the best investment I made that Christmas!
My wife hits the gym 5 days a week, early morning.
She uses this to keep her concentration.
She is on her 3rd set of headphones and swears by this little thing.
Tough and holds enough music to be good for a week or two at a shot.

works well for travel
by solareclipse1 ,Jul 17 '04
Pros: travels well, compatible with windows 98,me and xp
Cons: finding the memory upgrade
I like it. it's no ipod but its not 300 buck either. I travel 14 times a year and take it everywhere. It's compatible with a four of my computers and I really don't have a problem with the radio I can even get stations in the airport. Finding the memory upgrade on the other hand is turning into a problem.

Usable at best... worthless at worst.
by alzcrib ,Dec 27 '04
Pros: Price, light weight, comfortable layout.
Cons: FM tuner - reception & set-up are BAD.
I bought this for my daughter as her first MP3 player... knowing that it would take her a while to get up and running with MP3's, the FM receiver was an important feature. Getting the FM presets in place was a difficult task, getting them to stay set proved impossible! As an earlier reviewer stated, the jog stick is either under or way over responsive. After "auto scanning" the presets into oblivion three times, while showing her how to set them up, I was informed this unit was "a piece of crap!" Unfortunately I had no grounds to argue and promplty returned the unit.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I never did get to the MP3 portion of the player.
