by Howard_Creech Howard_Creech is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Mar 11 '04
Pros: Image stabilization, hot shoe, Very good AF performance, and excellent battery life
Cons: Complex operation, slightly noisy images
After a long cold wet and very unpleasant winter everyone in the Bluegrass State is eagerly looking for signs of spring. My friend (who sells new & used digital and analog photographic equipment) and I spent two recent weekends searching for the first ...

In a word - AWESOME

by Jakeblack , Oct 31 '03
Pros: FAST AF and almost no shutter lag. Antishake feature. Manual lens controls. Excellent image quality
Cons: Zoom lens a little sticky. Memory card included is only 16MB
I have had this camera for about a week now, and I have tested it indoors and out, in a variety of lighting and shooting scenarios from sports to portraits. I never tried the Minolta 7 series models that the A1 replaces, so you will not see me drawing co ...

1st Digicam that Captures What I See the Way I See It

by zoltanus , Apr 14 '04
Pros: mechanical zoom, AS, live histogram overlay, full manual controls, flash sync socket, wide dynamic range
Cons: electronic viewfinder, noise at high sensitivity settings, mediocre resolution for 5-megapixel sensor
Note: I have upgraded from a F ujifilm Finepix S602Z, so in a few areas, I shall compare the A1 to that camera. This might be useful to some of you – presumably those who are also S602Z owners thinking about ...

My little hands-on experience with the A1 :-)

by ricehigh , Oct 08 '03
Pros: High quality versatile zoom; Good functionality, especially the AS; Good price for what you get.
Cons: Indirect advanced operations; AF reliability not high enough; "Improved" EVF still has room for improvement.
Recently, I have tested the A1 two times indoor and outdoor and would like to share my limited hands-on experience and first impression about it. Body feel & handling It's very comfortable to hold and its grip has been much improved wh ...

Minolta Dimage A1 - A Great Camera

by lkcho , May 18 '04
Pros: Anti-shake, fast auto-focusing, manual control, good ergonomic design, 7X optical zoom and battery life.
Cons: Electronic viewfinder, small compact flash card, LCD cannot turn sideway.
I bought my Minolta Dimage A1 for almost 2 months now. It's such a big upgrade for me as before this camera, I am just used to point-and-shoot camera, that I don't know how to use the camera initially. However, with just a few hours reading through the ...

for former p/s users only.... big learning curve, but beautiful shots!

by polarpooch , Jul 07 '04
Pros: ANTI-SHAKE is awesome. Great manual zoom. Awesome macro. Breathtaking pics. Long battery life.
Cons: Complicated as heck. EVF needs lots of work. Bulky. Moderately expensive.
Always used P/S cameras before this. I'm no pro or expert...just someone who likes to take nice pictures. I was lured by a great price I found and the "anti shake" option on the camera. Pros and experts needn't read any further, I guess! The anti ...

Everything you could want in a great prosumer package!

by travisgood , Aug 28 '04
Pros: 7x optical zoom, antishake, 5 megapixel, VGA video at 30fps, swivel viewfinder/LCD, long battery life
Cons: steep learning curve to master all the features
Though I bought digital cameras previously, I studied the market for years before I bought the A1. For much of that time I was waiting for the upgrade to the Fuji S602 Zoom but when I finally bought the Fuji S7000 I was disappointed with the pictures, ...

Just got my A1

by dudepctech , Jan 07 '04
Pros: 7x Zoom, 5MP, Lots of Features.
Cons: AF hunts, LCD protection, WB indoors.
I just got my A1 about 8 days ago, and have shot about 200 pics with it so far. I researched digital cameras in the $400 to $900 range and came up with the Minolta A1. During my long search into the wee hours of the morning, I concentrated mostly on: ...

Minolta A1 a users dream

by neddly , Mar 03 '04
Pros: Vast aray of creative control that gives great versatility
Cons: None that I've experienced
I've owned my Minolta A1 for three months now, and feel that I've had enough experience with it to give a fair evaluation. I shoot almost exclusively outdoors with the camera on a tripod and using a cable release. For landscapes this camera is a great ...

Amazing quality, very few flaws

by mustangflyer , Jan 06 '04
Pros: Killer lens, anti-shake system, superb picture quality
Cons: electronic viewfinder could be better
The famous killer lens, the anti-shake system, the plethora of adjustments the camera lets you make, the clear and simple controls, the superb picture quality - those are the big positive arguments for this camera. Since I bought the A1 (5MP), it has ...

DiMAGE A1 is the most feature rich and flexible prosumer digital camera

by sandisct , Aug 05 '04
Pros: * Delivers pleasing 'film like' images with average resolution
Cons: * Noise increases at slower shutter speeds and especially long exposures
There's little doubt that the DiMAGE A1 is the most feature rich and flexible prosumer digital camera currently available. Indeed it has a range of flexibility beyond that of most digital SLR's. It's a camera designed as a photographers tool, and one ...

Pros: Lens covers every day shooting situations good wide & telephoto coverage
Cons: Poor customer service -- Internal battery that must be changed at the factory-
Having had my A-1 for over 45 days and having taken a intense photo course to be able to get maximum benefit of all the cameras whistle & bells. My conclusion is that this is a very good camera but not a great camera. Picture quality is average and the ...

One of the Best Prosumer Cameras as of 12/03

by neilfleming , Dec 08 '03
Pros: Full feature set, great ergonomics, 7x optical zoom with anti-shake, takes filters & flashes
Cons: Not many. Body is plastic rather than titanium (grin).
I feel that this is the best prosumer camera as of 12/2003! I've conducted an extremely thorough review of 4-5MP cameras offered by all of the major manufacturers at this time. Sources: Consumer Reports, all of the user-oriented evaluation sites like ...

Great bang for the buck
by basquedude ,Jun 02 '05
Pros: anti-shake, ton's of features, high quality pictures
Cons: low picture capacity as bought- have to upgrade card.
Wide range of features sets this camera apart, from the anti-shake system, movie feature, zoom range (28 - 200), speed (it can handle 1/16,000 of a sec), and many other high level features, this camera is special. Oh yeah, and the quality of the pictures is great, near "best in class" level.

Feature-rich, OK quality images
by zhubail ,Jan 17 '05
Pros: Manual zoom, rich features, wide angle.
Cons: Noise in dark areas no ISO50 4MP picture size. AE button close to thumb grip.
I bought this camera after extensive search and reviews. After I got I was a little disappointed with the amount of noise to the degree that I was about to return it. After reading more online comparisons I realized that its noise is probably not higher than comparable cameras.
The other camera I was contemplating was Olympus c5060, but it also has considerable noise. Canon G5 has a major design problem as the lens barrel protrudes into the viewfinder field. so I did not consider it. Sony 717 is more like a camera mounted on a lens, not good ergonomics. Nikon 5700 seems to produce better pictures, but design is not as impressive. So I decided to keep my A1.
The manual zoom is a joy to work with, and gives a "real camera" experience. It has plenty of features, some I may never need to use.
