Zoom, Zoom - Chapter Two The Konica-Minolta Dimage Z2

by Howard_Creech Howard_Creech is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Aug 08 '04
Pros: Price, new 10X optical zoom, hot shoe, Super fast AF, live histogram
Cons: Chromatic aberration, Minolta only Hot Shoe, small LCD screen
The Long Zoom digicam market niche was owned by Olympus (with Fuji occupying the time honored Hertz position) until Minolta introduced the amazingly capable little Dimage Z1. The Dimage Z2 is the first digicam to wear the Konica-Minolta badge and ...

I like it.

by gscheap , May 27 '04
Pros: Easy menu, 10X zoom, fast startup, Preview helpful for PMAS modes, Comfortable grip.
Cons: Plastic case, Grainy display, No TIFF, Flash is awkward to lift.
I've had it for a week and the initial quality is quite good. It does feel fragile, but I have not had any problems with it. I've probably taken 100 photos already. The zoom is incredible. But you will have to use a tripod to take advantage of it. ...

Z2 - I am an oversatisfied advanced amateur now

by redear , Jun 07 '04
Pros: 10x zoom, optics, focus/shutter speed, manual, powerful internal flash
Cons: grainy display, a bit of a plastic feeling
I wanted to buy a camera that would be smaller and lighter than my Canon EOS500, though with good optics and manual features - the final candidates were Kodak DX6490 and Minolta Z2. Z2 has won for me as it has manual focus and flash shoe, Kodak has only ...

Picked after 3 week research - Butterfly Photo is great!
by dennisharrison ,Apr 16 '05
Pros: Great photos, great optical, good accessories, easy to use, optical without specialized stabilization was fine.
Cons: Questionable quality plastic; - ok with use, but be careful.
First, I was a bit reluctant to purchase through the Internet. After much, much research - I picked this camera because of all the wonderful comments about it, its specifications, and its price/performance. Butterfly photo was chosen because of its very competitive prices AND its high recommendations by users (my experience with Butterfly was also great - they had some very good suggestions, answered my questions in a very pleasant manner, and came through beautifully with timely and well packed product. I will definitely use them as my vendor of choice for now on.

I have used the camera few times and am quite amazed with picture quality and the great 10x zoom that it has. when comparing it to some digital cameras I have had in the past (every 2-3 years I seem to get a new one). Not only is the price less than the past models I bought, but the quality and the features is also far superior. I would also recommend the high quality Wide Angle - it does a great job with out fish-eye distortion.

Thanks to BUTTERFLY for the great camera and timely, correct and good attitude suggestions.

You can't go wrong w/the Dimage Z2!
by ispikeonyou ,Jun 15 '04
Pros: 10x optical zoom Progressive and Continuous shooting Video EVF Cool design User-friendly
Cons: Software is a little difficult to figure out Does not come w/AC power cord
Nice design, user-friendly interface, and SUPER pictures - this camera has it all! I have had this camera for about a month and simply love it. You will need to spend some quality time w/the manual, but when your eyes are opened to what this camera can do - you will be amazed! If you don't want to read the manual and you just want to point and shoot and/or shoot some video, you will be fine ... but you will miss out on all this camera has to offer. You can push the shutter speed to 1/1000 and then let the camera set the apeture (light) setting to the appropriate level. The 10x optical zoom is sweet and the 4x digital on top of that is pretty good (as digital zoom goes). Focus lock is great and the autofocus is FAST. Also, the progressive and continuous modes are GREAT. These modes make you feel like you are using a $2K Nikkon. 4x6 prints are great. I can't wait to take more pics w/my awesome camera! Thank you Minolta!!!

Great Intro to Ultra Zooming
by riverrafter247 ,Jul 08 '05
Pros: Long zoom, movie mode, takes SD cards, fast zoom and focus, good flash
Cons: picture quality ok, but not exceptional. Good wide angle shots need converter (available)
The Konica Minolta Z2 (and the entire KM Z-x family) are excellent cameras for the amateur photographer who is moving up from a 'starter' digital camera. With 10X optical zoom (and now 12X on the Z5), 30fps movie mode with sound (and the ability to zoom during movie shooting!), an APO lens, light weight, easy to use menus, this is a feature filled camera. In my experience, battery life was excellent. The electronic viewfinder (which uses the same display as the rear LCD, via a swinging mirror, same as in the Z1) is acceptable, and better than some similarly priced ultra-zoom cameras (e.g. Fuji S5100).

Dimage Z2 - great camera for the price
by markdonnat ,Apr 12 '04
Pros: lens,10x zoom, controls/jog dial, looks, price, color, flash
Cons: - no adapter ring/barrel - no true IS
I received my Dimage Z2 about one week ago. I was a bit worried about its performance after reading so many negative reviews on the Z1. Well, either those reviews were wrong or the Z2 has been upgraded significantly. First, this is one awesome looking camera, not just futuristic, but well placed buttons, controls, etc. Focus is fast, manual and programmed features are superb. Color is very good and flash is powerful. No evidence of purple fringing. Use of a monopod (or tripod) greatly assists telephoto shots. Camera seems pretty sturdy, battery door feels "flimsy", but in reality is quite strong. Lens does rattle a little in closed position, but no problems that I can see. So far the switch viewfinder works well, no hangups. Controls are well placed and easily understood (although after using an Olympus 520Z for the last year or so, I now have more controls to get used to!). Overall I would rate this camera a 8.5 to 9 out of 10.

Works with a 1 gigabyte card, and that is probably the maximum
by leptonlaunch ,Nov 08 '07
Pros: Works with a 1 gigabyte sd card,
Cons: Probably, in fact most surely, does not work with a 4 gigabyte SDHC card
FYI Nobody will tell you the largest sd card supported by their camera. I talked to the service rep on the phone and he got it wrong as well- but that's not his fault, he was just refering to the manufacturers very own website. The manufacturers website only mentions a 1 gigabyte, as the largest card for the Z2.

Bad news, I couldn't get a 2 gigabyte card to work with the camera. 1 Gigabyte is the maximum

Best Long Zoom Camera for the Money
by captain_golf ,Aug 30 '04
Pros: Great AF...Excellent Lens...Fast Startup...minimal shutter lag...nice manual over-rides...Great sports mode
Cons: I wish body had more metal but on par with other consumer digicams
I'm a pro and I wanted something to shoot my kids playing sports without lugging one of my D2h's or S2's or similar camera. The fast focusing, no shutter lag, great burst modes, and GT lens quality are unsurpassed and I've tried them all. It runs on AA batteries and the noise and purple fringing issues are minimal...what are we printing...MURALS or 8x10's? You just don't need any more than 4 mega pixels. Buy this camera...you won't be sorry.

The best digital camera ever!
by marcovargas ,Apr 28 '04
Pros: User friendly, powerful zoom, excellent macro functions, small & light, lots of features
Cons: Zoom button can be fragile (a friend of mine broke his, so be careful!)
I bought a Minolta Dimage Z2 a little over 2 weeks ago. I also bought the 0.75x wide angle lens converter tube adapter. I have a 1GB SD SanDisk card on it and can take lots of pictures in high quality/high resolution format. I am not a photography buff or anything but the pictures I have taken with this camera are superb! The camera is very simple to operate, very user friendly. Since the camera lens are threaded it allows connecting the tube adapter. On the tube adapter you can connect any additional lens (wide angle or telephoto) as well as filters. I am very pleased with this purchase. I love my Minolta Dimage Z2!

Out Standing Camera
by forestspider ,Sep 07 '04
Pros: Features, ease of use, fast power up, price, beautiful zoomed pictures, You'll be satisfied.
Cons: not water resistant, more delicate than 35mm, short manual exposure setting, cons were a reach
For the price and the available features, how can you go wrong. On full res the pictures are fantastic. The 10x Optical ZOOM is better than binoculars. I can hardly believe how clear the telephoto pictures are. The telephoto needs good light i.e outdoors. I has a fairly rapid response from power up to first shot. The features are plentiful. The nigh time long exposure has a 30 second limit (no Star Field pictures). This is my first Digicam, even the movies at 30fps were pretty good, the sound & motion capture and the continuous auto focus all worked very well. I have taken hundreds of pictures over the past six weeks, on one particular expedition I shot over 600. I could not think of any problems other than I doubt it is water resistant. My other camera is the Pentax IQ90 WR (water resistant). The four AA batteries lasted for around 400 pictures, most of them w/o flash. Good battery condition information on the screen.

The Konica Minolta Digital Camera z2
by dloceci ,Nov 12 '04
Pros: 4.2 MP, awesome zoom, sound
Cons: battery life, auto focusing
Right as I came from my trip from the Blue Ridge mountains, I found out that my old digital camera was not cutting it anymore. So I set off to Ritz Camera and bought this one.

When I got the Konica Minolta, I popped in the batteries and set off in the neighborhood taking pictures of whatever I could. The sounds of the z2 were pretty cool with the snapshot sounds when you took the picture and the sound it makes when you cover up the LCD to go strictly viewfinder.

I had a bit of a problem figuring out the macro and resorted to the manual for this, and found out that it wasn't all that hard. After a while I was taking awesome pictures of roses.

The body of the camera was slick looking, and the battery cover didn't snap shut, but mine was the display model.

To Z2 or Not to Z2
by photowhit ,Jul 11 '04
Pros: Great zoom range! Very fast auto focus! Fastest shooting after focus of any digital.
Cons: Little 'noisey' Long zoom need monopod when dim (or wait for Z3 with image stabilizing!)
This is my first backward progression in resolution. I've owned a Dimage 7 and and have an Olympus C5050 (both 5 MP) and I've tried several other cameras.

I needed a long focal length camera for an upcoming trip and decided I couldn't justify an A2 and it looks like the A1 has been discontinued (price new now rivals the A2) So the Z2 had good reviews and was the right price. This is a very fast camera! The first thing I noticed! It also has a 'Progressive' mode which allows you to shoot to the buffer with out recording the images to your card, only recording the last 5 images when you release the shutter! This is the answer to the 'can't shoot sports' problem of small digitals.

I've been very impressed. It is noisier than the 5 MP cameras I've owned, even the high density C5050. But should make nice 8x10's at up to 100 ISO. I've only made cropped 4x6's so far (very nice!)
