Pros: Does its job. Cons: Can be a little too helpful at times.
It is kind of a funny thing to actually buy software. Unlike downloading a cracked version in which if something goes wrong there is less care for no monies changed hands – when you actually buy something from the store shelf it is amazing how much ...
Pros: Takes up little space. Barely affects computer performance. User-Friendly Interface. Cons: Does not come with firewall like previous versions.
Norton has never done so though.
Firstly, I would advise readers of this review to be open- minded and not to listen to the type of trash that die-hard Norton Antivirus users tell you. I have used both Anti-viruses, and being completely impartial, I much prefer McAfee. McAfee is easy to ...
Pros: Uh, not a lot of directs to have to read through. Cons: Screws up your computer. Sorry customer service.
I have a Dell 4550 with Windows XP. I love the computer but after my son had been downloading some songs I decided we needed a virus program. I had heard of McAfee and Norton and bought McAfee. Loading it was not that much of a problem but right after ...
Pros: Easy to use and fairly efficient Cons: None.
I use the updated version of version 8 (called 8.0i). It was given to me by a college after I work there for some time. I found it is fairly stable, use very little computer resources and catch most viruses. Satisfied, I then install it on all my home ...
Pros: none Cons: System crashes, installation problems, interfered with internet access, no dependable uninstall feature, terrible tech support.
I had McAfee Internet Security on my laptop and it slowed considerably. I spoke with an IT person who told me that McAfee had a lot of problems with their software. I uninstalled it and the problem went away. I decided to try the VirusScan Enterprise ...
Pros: If you love a troubleshooting challenge, McAfee will offer you endless entertainment. Cons: It infects your computer.
More annoying than any virus I've ever seen.
Well a virus never aggravated, inconvenienced me, nor hogged system resources, slowing down my PC as much as this program did (as part of the McAfee Internet Security package).
Furthermore, McAfee's support is abysmal, embarrassing even.
There isn't room here to detail all the problems I've had with this package, but suffice it to say that I've got six months left on my subscription and I've uninstalled it completely. My computer is running better than it has in months and I feel like I've finally eliminated some pesky VIRUS!
Maybe they're operating on the premise that I won't catch a cold if I've already got the flu.
Good, but Real Time Engine Slows Win98SE by tor1no ,Aug 20 '06
Pros: Good, thorough, and fairly unobtrusive virus protection. Cons: Real time virus scanning engine severely slows down Win98SE.
I have McAfee 8.0 loaded on my computers since it is offered as part of the AOL service. I have three computers running WinXP SP2 and three running Win98SE. All of the computers have comparable specifications and are 1 to 2 years old. The WinXP computers run McAfee with little slowdown. It is barely noticeable. The Win98 computers are severely slowed down when the McAfee real time engine is running. The slowdown is most noticeable when Win98 is booting up and when programs are accessed for the first time since bootup. In other words, hard disk operations are severely slowed down in Win98 when the McAfee real time engine is running. I tried setting the real time engine to scan only executable files, but this made little difference. I also tried disabling other real time options, such as heuristic scanning, but did not see any difference in performance. I keep the real time engine disabled on my Win98 computers and run periodic scans on them to ensure that they remain virus-free. I run the real time engine with all options enabled on my WinXP computers and their performance remains good.
All I can say is: CAVEAT EMPTOR ! by hexuan ,Nov 14 '04
Pros: No idea. It didn't work. Cons: Software didn't work. McAfee refund promise is a lie. Deliberately obstructive "customer service" system.
After parting with the money at mcafee.com, I went through the bizarre process of installing this off the internet. You don't of course get an executable file to download.
After it installed it didn't work. The stupid HTML interface it uses was all "action cancelled". So I could do nothing with it. Tech support of course couldn't care less, and I wouldn't expect them to either, the program is supposed to work out of the box. The customer support people at McAfee clearly know very little about computers.
So. The refund policy at http://uk.mcafee.com/root/support.asp?id=retail_refund then.
Forget about it. They have fobbed me off with nonsense, some of which is barely literate, and are clearly hoping I will either go away, or that we will get beyond the 7 day refund period. They have told me, by the way, that I didn't buy the product from them, I bought it from "Digital River", despite buying it from www.mcafee.com. So now you know what McAfee will say to you when they've had enough of you.
You'll buy from McAfee once in a lifetime. For those of you yet to have the McAfee experience, I warn you, it is not pleasant.
Pros: Easy to use, ...and it works! Cons: None that I can think of
Since AOL was offering McAfee for free, I figured why not give it a shot? Let me tell you I am glad I did, and after seeing what it did for me I would have bought the software myself if I had known it was this powerful.
When scanning 192,000+ files on my two hard drives McAfee found a lot of stuff I didn't even know was there; stuff that even AdAware and Spybot had missed.
The software is prevalent in ease of use. You get a system tray icon from which you can access all of the program's features. It also protects against incoming threats.
This program is much easier to install than Norton, which required me to enter a ridiculously long serial key which ended up being wrong and I had to register it by phone anyway. All I had to do with McAfee was run the installer (free with AOL).
I would recommend McAfee VirusScan to anyone. Go out and buy it! Or better yet, subscribe to AOL and get it for free (AOL 9.0 rocks). Either way, you won't be disappointed.
HOGS UP TO MUCH COMPUTER RESOURCES by bobdptro ,May 07 '04
Pros: CHEAP after rebates...but still not worth it Cons: Slows down computer toooo much !
I would advise STAYING AWAY from all McAfee AntiVirus products. It hogs up to much resources on the computer. It makes way longer boot up time. And to make things worse.......They cut off my updates after only 8 Months. I paid for the 1 FULL Year of updates. I emailed them but they could care less. I am now using eTrust EZ AntiVirus & Firewall. They work great and boot up time is way faster. STAY AWAY FROM McAfee !
Pros: the box is a nice color red Cons: Irritating pop ups, doesn't work, no customer service
I've been successful purchasing, downloading and using software for my small business, but McAfee is terrible! The Virusscan 2004 V8.0 I purchased has NEVER worked to it's full potential. I cannot get my account activated to receive on-line updates and the website customer service is the worst I've ever seen.
I have no problems telling people if they are thinking about purchasing McAfee products they should sit down somewhere quite and wait until the urge goes away.
This product should not be sold to anyone!
Pros: Seems to work Cons: You can't buy more than one copy of the software
If you intend to buy this software from the internet, just be aware that the Network Associates McAfee site does not seem to support multiple purchases for different machines unless you use multiple email addresses for each purchase. This means that if you try to purchase another copy for a new machine using the same email address, you will in effect just extend the subscription of your current version of the software.
This little SNAFU will end up leaving many people that want multiple copies for their multiple machines at home with only a single license for one machine. All the other machines will be running illegally.
Customer Supports suggestion is to use another email address. Sorry, but I feel that this is pretty shortsighted for a company that sells software on the internet.
Bought VirusScan 8.0 for a brand-new Compaq PC (Win XP, 512 MB RAM, 2.2 processor, etc.). The PC worked great for the two weeks I was running it...no problems whatsoever. I decided to get a virus app, so I bought VirusScan. It was a good price and Network Associates/McAfee has always seemed like a solid company.
Well, their product isn't solid! Install went fine, but upon restarting the machine, McAfee Security Center launches (obviously install put it in the Startup directory) and the PC freezes halfway through the McAfee software startup. The PC freezes so badly that Control+Alt+Delete and the mouse doesn't even work. It requires a hard reboot (pull power plug or hold power button down for 5-10 seconds).
Tech support was worthless! They kept trying to blame it on other things (hardware problem, system vendor, etc.). They couldn't understand that it was a problem with their product...they kept telling me to call Compaq. Very rude, too.
Don't buy this product. I finally was able to fix the computer (almost had to reinstall Windows!), and returned the product (minus shipping charges, of course). But something else, please.
