Pros: Good image quality for a digital camera, durable, intuitive, reasonably fast zoom. Cons: Shutter lag, focusing could be faster, poor low light focusing, image quality could be better.
Several fine reviews of the this camera have already been written, so I'm going to focus on my field experience with the Nikon Coolpix 5400. Durability This camera has taken its fair share of bumps and is no worse for the wear. It's hit the ...
Pros: Tons of features, decent battery life, excellent closeup macro ability, etc. Cons: soft images, images less sharp than my Canon S50, slightly worse image than 5000
I don't know what it is with digital cameras and my wallet. I usually have my credit card out to bu ...
Pros: Wide angle lens. Excellent metering. Minimal artifacts. Good grip. Good software.
Cons: Bad low light focussing. Slow image processing. Small preview screen.
Comparison: I compared five 5M cameras before settling on the Nikon 5400. Film wise I've dabbled with photography for quite a while, starting with an Olympus XA1, and I've had a Canon EOS 1000F SLR for 12 years. I bought an Olympus D-540L some time ago, w ...
Pros: Cool design, very full featured, 15 scene modes Cons: Image quality and performance not as good as I expected.
As there are several excellent reviews already listed here that go over the specifications for this camera, I will not repeat any of that info. Plus you can get all the specs you want from Nikon.com - I will stick to what I liked about it, what I did ...
Pros: many features, easy to learn/use, high quality built, excellent photos, small size, battery life Cons: no low light focus aid
I bought Nikon 5400 after about 3 months of researching. I had an old Olympus D450-Z 1.3 MP and it was about time to upgrade. I am not a photographer but I know a thing or two, and I am trying to learn how to be close to one. Before I buy anything, ...
Pros: Wide Angle Lens. Produces very rich, accurate colors. Small size, easy to tote around. Cons: Dim light focus problem. ISO 400 has too much noise. No RAW file mode.
This is my third digital camera. I compared the Nikon 5400 with the Sony DSC-V1 and the Cannon G5, before I bought. I picked the Nikon 5400 mainly because of the wide angle lens. I haven't taken a picture yet, where I needed a wider angle than the Nikon 5 ...
Pros: It is the world's lightest, most compact full featured digital camera for the serious amateur. Cons: It is not the ideal snapshooter's camera for family photography.
First of all, I will admit that the 5400 is not necessarily the ideal camera for the family snapshooter. It is a bit more complicated to use than other cameras. It doesn't focus as fast indoors as other cameras which have a focus assist light, and its ...
Pros: Lightweight, great wide angle, feels good in the hand, sharp. Cons: Slow to "write" image. No other problems!
WHY choose the Coolpix 5400 when there are so many 5 megapixel cameras out there, and many cheaper ones? Two reasons: great handling, and a wide angle lens. There are only a handful of cameras that go down to 28mm--and this used to be the ...
Pros: Metal Body, Nikon quality, great pictures, manual mode, external flash opt, solid camera for money. Cons: Heavy, big (but metal body), battery life average...otherwise for the money cant be beat!
I was browsing in a store, when I saw this gem for under $400 (w/rebate!). A metal body Nikon, with 5.1 megapixels, 4 optical zoom, flash extension slot for Nikon flashes, and a lot of features I dont need yet (which I will probably use later). When I put this camera in my hand, it felt SOLID. Metal body digital cameras under $500 dont come along that much. It is heavier and bigger than an Elph, but you can feel the quality! Battery is so-so, I recommend another battery pack. Shutter lag is much better than lesser Coolpix, exp. 4300, which I have. The pcitures are great looking, but Nikon's produce soft pictures. And the easy of use is excellent. I was shooting pictures, right after I took out from box.
Pros: Really nice camera, worked well for 18 mo... then CCD issue. Cons: Horrible customer service! CCD recall does not cover 5400!!!
The camera worked very well for quite some time. Then images went black/blurry (CCD issue), the recall for this issue is only for 5700 cameras not 5400!!!
Nikon Coolpix 5400 Digital Camera by rabouffard ,Feb 28 '05
Pros: none Cons: macro mode useless
shutter lag
Nikon Customer service is poor
Expensive, cryptic controls, poor image quality, poor fit and finish, purchased for use as clinical dental camera, won't focus on mirrors in macro mode. Manual override not possible. Long delay between activation of shutter and capture of image makes this camera useless for action/sports photos. Nikon customer service has been no help whatsoever, non-responsive, difficult to get to a human voice, and when one is contacted you might as well have not bothered. Bought a Fuji Finepix, all the problems went away.
Not the easiest camera for an amateur... by beckysensei ,May 09 '05
Pros: The cool swivel screen in back; all the bells and whistles if you're into that. Cons: HORRIBLE BATTERY LIFE!! Blurry close-ups; all the bells and whistles if you're not into that.
I had done a great deal of research before buying a new digital camera (I'd had a 2.1MP Olympus Camedia that I was frustrated with). After looking and looking online, I finally narrowed my search on this camera, the Nikon Coolpix 5400. At the same time, I ordered a 512MB memory card. Everything arrived and within a day, I was horribly disappointed. I'm not a professional photographer and this camera was very involved--aperture, exposure, etc. all have to be taken into consideration. I just wanted a good point and shoot but this wasn't it. Every photo I took within 3 feet was blurry (beyond recognition). I would say in the first 100 photos, maybe 20 were clear and considerably good. The battery life was THE WORST!! I bought 2 additional 1000 mAh batteries online and would constantly cycle through those at one event, plus the 650 mAh that came with the camera. I think one battery lasted less than an hour. After 2 months of using this, and endless hours of frustration, I finally sold it on eBay for a lot less than I paid for it.
Pros: Great photo quality, great colors, easy to use, strong construction. Cons: Needs external flash at nightshots
I am very happy with it. Especially after the firmware update. Now it takes RAW mode shots. It performs best in the daylight, excellent picture quality.
Getting old - look elsewhere by hbj200 - Top 1000,Feb 02 '05
Pros: Lots of controls, can be found at a good price Cons: Picture quality not up to par, slow speed, small LCD screen, discontinued
The Coolpix 5400 is a model that's nearly two years old and, in digital photograpy terms, it's already a dinosaur. It takes good-quality pictures, better than most tiny point-and-shoots, but compared to Nikon's newer advanced compact digital cameras (8400, 8700, 8800, etc.) and the latest G-series from Canon, it's a very lackluster performer. I also have issues with the very small (1.5") LCD screen. The sensor on this camera is small, resulting in picture quality that cannot be compared to cameras with larger sensors.
Yes, this is cheap after the $200 rebate, but it's a camera that wasn't great when it was new and is definitely way out-of-date by now, and its picture quality just doesn't do justice to the Nikon brandname.
Coolpix 5400 Great Camera but... by pax2002 ,May 29 '05
Pros: Ease of use, sharing pix over the internet, seeing the image immediately and making corrections. Cons: Slow reaction, problem with creative control: Having used a Nikon FE, a real disappointment.
I was delighted for the first 13 months. Then the camera failed completely. No power, nothing.
It will take some time to fix. Happily, Nikon Canada gives a 2 year warranty.
My gut told me to buy a good SLR. I disregarded that, to my regret.
