Pros: Very smooth. Inexpensive Cons: Not ovely flavourful Lacks basic smokey notes. Just a tad grainy
I was given a one liter bottle of Old Smuggler Scotch recently. One reason was because my son wanted to give a little something for me. If he purchased a bottle of rum, tequilla, or other such Caribbean based alcohol I would have to share it with my ...

Pros: Inexpensive. If your goal is to get drunk, it will help you achieve it. Cons: Bitter and unrefined.
I was sitting around after having finished a bottle of G
lenmorangie
12 Year Old, Port Wood Finish, Highland Single Malt Whisky and decided, after recently dropping $50 on a fifth of the wonderful malt, to try something ...

Pros: -Great finish
-Smooth
-inexpensive Cons: -Not as full flavored and thinner
-Somewhat hard to find
I have yet to find a bottle of scotch in the $0 to $29 per 750 ml range that is as good as this. I thought it had tastes that were comparable to some $30 to $40 bottles and was nearly as smooth but not quite as strong and much more thin. I actually liked ...

Definitely Drinkable
by roadlizard7 ,Feb 07 '07
Pros: Good taste for the price. Not $50 for 750 ML.
Cons: Not the finest, smoothest scotch on the market.
I have searched for a long time for a decent, inexpensive scotch that doesn't taste like dung. This is definitely the best inexpensive scotch I've found. I originally started drinking the 12 year old (which I don't think is made any longer). It was quite good. Recently I got into the regular stuff. It needs to be on the rocks, but is fairly smooth with something of a floral and honey taste. I enjoy a large glass with a cigar after work, and it doesn't break the bank. At $17.99 for 1.75 liters, it's a bargain. It compares favorably to Dewar's or J& B, both of which are over twice as expensive. Give it a try for an everyday scotch. You may like it.

I Liked It!
by ilovescotch ,May 11 '06
Pros: Cheap Cons: Bottom shelf
Sure it's cheap. Sure it's bottom shelf.
However, if you avoid taking that sniff we all do with Scotch, and just take a swig, it's bearable. Inver House and Scoresby's rate way, way lower on my list.
I paid something like $8.79 for a 750 ml bottle.
It's okay and actually very smooth.
We all know a Single Malt is the way to go, but sometimes a cheap Scotch, that works, is what is desired and affordable.
I guess I have drank some of the crapiest stuff ever; so I am biased as to what qualifies as "good". Old Smuggler really didn't disappoint for its price.

Nice surprise
by julianmanov ,May 11 '08
Pros: Good value for money! Cons: Stronger than many could hold...
Recently I have been buying primarily good and expensive whiskies, but today I decided to take and try just by the way an Old Smuggler. What a nice surprise for the money you spend on it. I never expected to feel that good. Sharp and tasty before dinner. I will buy it again.

Missing Old Smugglers(1.75) liters
by connosieur ,Oct 13 '09
Pros: Old Smugglers is the smoothest available; beats JW Red and Dewars and is affordable. Cons: Availability of 1.75 liter bottles is real problem in North Carolina.
Brunswick county N.C. residents are experiencing significant difficulty in purchasing 1.75 liters of Smugglers. This is a reoccurring problem. It appears that an unfair advantage is being given to other brands. Local liquor stores in Sunset Beach, Calabash, and Ocean Isle are not being adequately by state liquor warehouses. Is there a procurement problem. Please advise!

not bad for the price
by jack-n-ark ,Feb 15 '09
Pros: Drinkable, mixes well, affordable... has a nice fragrance, smooth Cons: Not as good as Dewars or J & B, but still very drinkable.
If you are looking for a smooth, drinkable scotch, that's affordable, this is a good choice. I really enjoy it. It lets you know you are drinking whiskey, but doesn't kick you in the head like most American whiskeys. I like it much better than the cheaper ones (Clan McGregor, for example) but it's nearly as smooth as Dewars, and some what less expensive. It's worth its price.
