Pros: pictures are high quality/look beautiful Cons: battery life, menu learning curve (not plug and play)
I received this camera as a Christmas gift. I understand it was around $200 at Costco. It's my first digital camera, and I didn't make any specifications about what type I wanted for Christmas, so this particular model was as much a surprise as any ...

Olympus D-580
by tinbender57029 ,May 15 '05
Pros: east to use. Excellent picture quality outdoors and indoors with adequate light. Cons: Indoor pictures may be dark if subject is out of the flash range.
For most picture taking this camera is easy to use and takes fine pictures. I did have problems taking indoor pictures at sports events like wrestling photos and pictures on stage. If the subject is out of the flash range the picture is dark. There is a considerable lag between pictures and you may miss some action shots that happen close together. Outdoors after sunset there may not be enough light for really good pictures. The 3X magnification is adequate for most applications but sometimes you could use a little more. Overall it is an great camera for the price.

Pros: Size, clam shell design and ease of use. Cons: Slow shutter lag.
Overall good camera...but shutter lag slow....with a small child I have number pictures of the back of her head.
Many shots missed or ruined by taking picture a second after the moment.

Nice pictures: eats AA batteries like they're rice paper
by bruce66 ,Jan 13 '05
Pros: Easy to use. Cons: Eats batteries.
Great entry level digital camera for taking high quality snapshots. The Olympus proprietary software makes you think you have to upgrade to their pro-software in order to email pictures. You don't: you just have to figure out (or reassign) where the pictures are being stored in order to post/email them.
Biggest complaint: this camera eats batteries. If you're using the flash, plan on 20-30 pictures between new pairs of regular AA's. If you turn off the LCD screen, and don't use the flash, you'll get 40-45 pictures. I need to buy some lithium-ions to see how long they'll last.

Amazing Camera within an excellent price
by emaspero ,Aug 05 '04
Pros: Picture quality. Easy to use. Cons: Batteries life
Ok This is my second Olympus camera. My first one was a D510, and I have it for almost two years. One week ago I change my old one for this brand new.
Excellent definition. Very easy to use. The XD memory card work great. On a 128mb card, using the HQ resolution I have space for 130 photos.
Be aware to have 1 or 2 replacements kits of batteries. The D510 use 4 AA bat. This one only use 2 AA bat, so you will have to replace batteries twice in the same time

Olympus D-580 Terrific performance to price
by geojerry ,May 26 '05
Pros: Great picture quality, small enough to put in pocket, great price to quality value. Cons: Eats regular batteries, uses xd memory cards which are slightly more expensive.
The Olympus D-580 is a great 4 megapixel camera that is small enough to fit into ones pocket. Picture quality is excellent, especially when using the highest resolution. When buying the D-580 plan on buying a battery charger and eight rechargeable batteries rated at least 2500 milliamps. The camera eats AA alkaline batteries.
I brought six cameras to Ireland with me on a recent trip and ended up using the D-580 for 90% of my shooting because of its carry convenience and picture quality. This is one of the best under $200 cameras on the market.
