Panasonic DMR-E80 DVD HDD Recorder / Player

by dkozin dkozin is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Sep 10 '03
Pros: Excellent picture quality in XP/SP recording and playback, good useful features, inputs, outputs
Cons: No 5.1 analog or digital audio input, complicated manual
The Panasonic DMR-E80H is a combination Hard Drive and DVD-Recorder. It allows you to record shows on its internal hard drive in addition to DVD discs of two formats: write-once DVD-R and rewriteable DVD-RAM. The programs from the hard drive can ...

Impressions after 30 days

by jimweil , Oct 28 '03
Pros: Hard Drive, Good Value, Great Functionality, Quality Unit.
Cons: Poor Manual/Support, Limited Remote Range, Lackluster Human Engineering. Copy Limitations
This is my first DVD Recorder or Player (other than computer). I purchased the unit after some research. Generally most of the other reviews were fairly on the mark. First Impressions: Easy to set up but complex to use. This is one device that require ...

Does a very nice job, but it's not perfect

by wkronenb , Nov 15 '03
Pros: Large hard drive, high quality recording (with lots of quality options)
Cons: No iLINK input; no working TV-coaxial output; can't record DVD-R to hard drive
The thing that caught my eye about this unit is the combination of an 80 GB hard drive recorder and DVD recorder in the same unit. This allows you to copy your home videos or TV shows to a hard drive, which cuts out worries about putting a disk in the un ...

Been Waiting for This

by jh1221 , Feb 24 '04
Pros: Digital recording for all! No TiVo fees or compiling data on our viewing habits.
Cons: Expensive. There could be improvements, but nothing that would make this not worth buying.
Years ago I wondered why they couldn't invent a machine that would record TV signals onto a computer hard drive instead of videotape. With TiVo, and now the Panasonic DMR-E80H, they FINALLY did it! The only thing missing, unless it's buried in the ...

by oliwa , Sep 03 '03
Pros: Built-In hard drive with great editing capabilities
Cons: Only supports DVD-Ram and DVD-R
I bought this DVD Recorder as a replacement for my VCR. I have a 65" Widescreen TV and found it unb ...

The gift that keeps on giving!

by relictele , Nov 18 '04
Pros: No fees, no ads, no 'viewer demographics' spyware
Cons: No keyboard input, no edit-during-record
If you are a TiVo devotee, then please exit via the doors to your right. Otherwise, read on... I write this in the aftermath of the announcement that TiVo units will display pop-up/banner ads when users fast-forward through commercials. Add this to ...

Buy It for the DVD Recorder; Love It For the Hard Drive!

by richdmarsh38 , Jan 02 '04
Pros: Hard Drive is wonderful! Practically unlimited recording with labels is great too!
Cons: No commercial advance. Machine does not have ability to change channel on your cable box.
After having purchased many vcr's over the last 20 years, I was use to taking the machine out of the box and start using it. With this machine, you really must read the instruction manual from cover to cover! Remember when VCR's first came out and ...

RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommended in a heartbeat

by dougal42 , Nov 08 '03
Pros: Great picture, sound. Good dubbing features. great menus with the navigator function being a real plus
Cons: Can't copy pre-recorded DVDs. Can't record in 5.1 audio. Remote sensor is poorly placed.
This machine is a gift from heaven. It does everything superbly and is one of the few tech devices I have purchased recently that is well thought out and appears to have been actually used by the engineers designing it. Now if only you could copy pre-reco ...

The DMRE80H is simply awesome.

by mcfranson , Feb 05 '04
Pros: Speed. Quality. Just like having TiVo.
Cons: Price. Media Prices. No keyboard input.
I have had this for 5 months and it is amazing. I paid $699. This is the DMRE80H. I'm burning a DVD right now with stuff I want to keep so I can clear room on my hard drive. I like to burn a 4 hour LP disc since it has better quality video than a 6 hour ...

I'm as happy as the day I bought my first VCR in 1978

by mjdart , Dec 07 '03
Pros: Outstanding performance for the price, it greatly simplifies my life.
Cons: So many features makes operation complicated for a novice user.
Like several have mentioned I needed to replace my VCR as my primary recording device for time shifting. The more I researched the more the Model DMR-E80H quickly became my choice. I mentioned the machines capabilities to a co-worker and he was very ...

Stay away. Great concept, all the features, lacking usability

by arshad , Mar 31 '05
Pros: Can edit before burning, can fast-burn. HD gives a lot of flexibility.
Cons: Poor response time. Complicated menu system. Poor documentation. Scheduling is hard. No optical audio in.
I love the features this has, it's everything I wanted to archive the shows I really would watch again. I use it in combination with a Tivo (yes, a Tivo DVD recorder would be much preferable, but this will do). When I have a show I want to keep, I can ...

WOW - You won't be disappointed

by bsantelli , Dec 28 '03
Pros: Hard Drive
Cons: Cannot dub from dvd-r to hard drive
There are so many reviews here that have been really detailed. I agree with them all. Instead of re-hashing all of the same things, I'll try to give some high level thoughts and tips on using this. First of all - I was worried when ordering this, ...

Light years ahead of a VCR with a few complaints

by pvrreview , Jun 10 '04
Pros: 1 Min. Skip, Time Slip, Ability to edit, High speed dubbing, Price, HD capacity.
Cons: Can't edit while recording. Can't delete while recording.
This is one of those purchases that you drop everything and rip it out of the box when it arrives. My primary reason for the purchase was to record TV shows without having to constantly change tapes, forget what was on each tape. Not to mention the ...

Best thing since remote control

by davelchen , Mar 19 '04
Pros: Must have for any home TV lover without TiVo monthly subscription crap and spyware.
Cons: none... perhaps DVD record speed. and can't access HD while recording.
After reading glowing epinion reviews, I bought this for my mom who watches a ton of TV, right after the new year (3 months ago). It was for around $500 mail order. She has it hooked up to the progressive inputs of her HDTV digital mitsubishi ...
