Panasonic DVD-S25 DVD Player with Progressive Scan, MP3 and Some Surprises

by dkozin dkozin is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Dec 16 '03
Pros: Coaxial out instead of optical, price, features, excellent performance, compact and lightweight
Cons: No S-Video out, no DVD-RAM playback, no running time display on front
I can recommend the Panasonic S25 to anyone. Well, almost anyone. Connectivity Surprises I was surprised to see that the, traditional for Panasonic DVD players, optical digital audio out was replaced by the coaxial digital out. A non-issue ...

Perfect Player

by trekkiebear , May 17 '04
Pros: Everyone from the youngest to the oldest member of our family can use with ease.
Cons: None
The best purchases leave you feeling as if you found the deal of a lifetime. This is one of those items. I'm not much of a one for technical expertise, but I can tell you this player has made an entire family happy. This player works wonderfully ...

Not bad as a DVD player, horrible with JPEG files

by alexkr , Sep 07 '04
Pros: Good video and audio quality.
Cons: Very limited JPEG file capabilities
I purchased Panasonic DVD-S25K DVD player mostly because my older DVD player could not read JPEG files which became a very necessary feature for me after I bought a digital camera. The fact that Panasonic DVD-S25K also supported progressive scan output ...

Stopped Readings Discs
by bretzing ,Jan 13 '05
Pros: It started out working really well. Good picture, and reading ability.
Cons: after using for about 1 year, it stopped working all together. I wouldn't recommend it.
We purchased ours a little over a year ago. It refuses to read certain discs (scratching isn't an issue...brand new discs don't work) and any time we rent a movie we end up having to watch it on My XBOX rather than on the DVD player...Crazy thing is...it still reads my daughter's Baby Einstein movies...not sure what the heck is wrong with it...I thought by buying a panasonic I would get quality...next time I am going to buy the $30 player...then when it stops working, It won't be that big of a deal.

Was great while it worked
by jeff__ ,Oct 11 '04
Pros: Great Picture, Sound and Price
Cons: Reliability, Crappy and Unresponsive Remote. Hard to control fast forward and reverse.
I've had this DVD player for about 9 months and up until a month ago it worked great. Like one of the previous reviewers mine started freezing every few minutes on at least half the DVD's I watch. I've monitored the condition of the disks and they don't appear to be the problem.

Like most electronics these days, it's not worth the hassle and likely labor charges to try and have it fixed under warranty, so I chose to purchase a new player. Based on my experience with the S25 and the many reported problems with the S35 and other recent Panasonic players I went with a Sony replacement and so far am very pleased with my choice.

H02/H07 Errors
by dpyper ,Jul 20 '05
Pros: Lots of connections.
Cons: H02/H07 errors
I've had this unit for 2 years now. It was a great unit until today when it started having trouble reading disks. It would report H02 and sometimes H07 and then shut down. I opened the unit and could get it to work by manually spinning-up the disk, but when the disk stops for any reason (extended pause, end of movie, etc.) you're stuck. I expected Panasonic products to last for many years, and I am disappointed. I was surprised at how much empty space is in this unit when I opened it up.

Bought on Air Force Base - Wow!
by jbfalaska ,Feb 24 '04
Pros: Put anything in this unit and it will play.
Cons: Holds only one DVD, but no biggie.
I have a Sony, top of the line DVD player and a previous model from the same company. The Sony wouldn't play about 15 of my disks. Even minor scratches caused it to freeze. I tried buying a DVD doctor and this helped with some, but what a pain. When this model became a sale priced item I snatched one up.

Now all my disks play perfectly. I put my worst DVD in the machine after it breezed through several normally frozen tracks and it churned through everything! The worst DVD was actually cracked and this model still played flawlessly!

POS
by ssdesigner ,Nov 26 '04
Pros: No pros whatsoever
Cons: Read my letter
Had my S-25 for 7 months and it is the same as others have reported...starts pausing every few minutes after you get 1/2 hour into ANY dvd. What a complete and utter dissapointment. Panasonic has been a brand I've used for decades, but by god it will be a cold day in hates before you EVER see another panasonic label in my home or anyones I know. Cars have FREE RECALS...this should fall under that line, by all rights Panasonic should be issuing gift certificates to people that bought this lemon. You can send mine to: ssdesigner(at)yahoo.com Panasonic, otherwise I'm done with ya.

Pros: cheap, well made, the zoom features are cool
Cons: none yet
I went to my local audio/video store and they recommended this player to me at the $100 or less price range. I got one and i am really impressed. Component video looks great and the digital sound rocks.

The Panasonic DVD-S25S
by swepin ,Feb 04 '04
Pros: Extensive zoom feature. Has features that pricier models have.
Cons: Bad exterior design. Average Picture Quality
I returned my SONY dvp-ns425 model for this one. This dvd player has all the features of the Sony model plus zoom. I think Sony has begun charging for its' brand name, rather than its' products features. If you have a standard TV, a zoom is essential, unless you like watching a movie through a keyhole. The zoom on this model is great, it lets you incremental zoom from 1X-2X in .01 increments. Therefore, you can fit a 2.35:1 picture (widest widescreen) to a standard tv with no black bars.

The picture quality is slightly poorer than the Sony model. I think there is a slight flicker at the screen edges with bright white scenes, although it could be my old tv. If anyone else notices this problem please write about it.

Access to onscreen menu items are overly complicated and scattered around.

Despite the great features of this dvd player it's the ugliest player I have ever seen. It looks like it's been transported from the '80s. Other than that, it's a decent player for it's price.

DVD player with a stammer
by aldermcgregor ,Jul 17 '04
Pros: Terrific picture / sound, plays audio CD's beautifully, fits in almost any home hi-fi unit
Cons: Picture freezes on many of my DVD's, not the easiest user interface for novices
Hmmm... this is a tricky one to write. When it's working properly, the Panasonic DVD-S25 is an absolute joy, delivering crisp, clear video and audio.

But unfortunately, ours is a lemon. For some reason it keeps sticking on a still frame and the movie can't be moved on again without pressing the 'stop' or 'skip scene' button.

This happens many times during a movie, making it almost impossible to watch.

We've tried inserting a lot of different DVD's and it seems to dislike about half of them. Oddly enough, it plays audio CD's superbly, without any sticking, jumping or freezing.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? For this reason I can only give the DVD-S25 a poor 3/10.

For a brand renowned for its quality and durability, I'm very disappointed. Come on Panasonic; you can do a lot better than this.
