Solid product. Just plug and play.

by likestotinker , Apr 30 '06
Pros: Looks and feels solid and reliable. Attractive design. Just plug and play.
Cons: No accessories or freebie software. Not a problem for me, though.
I've had this drive for about a week now and I'm very happy with it. The unit itself is solidly packaged in a metal case and a shock absorbing rubber base with a cap on the end to cover the connectors. It slips right into a pocket in my laptop bag. ...

Compact-sized, stylish, works without AC adapter

by hbj200 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Jan 13 '06
Pros: Small, stylish, good speed for a small drive, no AC adapter needed
Cons: Gets hot, not the fastest external drive around
Now, if you use a Mac, you should probably just switch to Windows since this (and millions of other great products) won't play well with Apple's closed-architecture. (Maybe their upcoming switch to Intel will help, but then, maybe not.) Windows ...

Indestructible

by joedca18 , Feb 13 '06
Pros: durable, quiet
Cons: none
I have been shipping and receiving as many as 15 hard drives a week to various locations throughout the country. I bought 60 3.5” drives and placed them in Pelican cases for shipping. The first 14 weeks worked great until I began receiving 2-3 disks ...

Wonderful drive so far
by mpmason68 ,Apr 08 '05
Pros: Speed, storage space, seems sturdy.
Cons: No serious cons.
I cannot say enough good things about this drive. However, I have only had it for about a month, so I will update this review after I have used it a while longer.

This drive does everything I needed and at a wonderful price. After rebate, this speedy 80GB drive cost $129. Of course, I haven't received the rebate check yet, but that was the price.

The drive could not be simpler to use. Plug the included cable into the drive, then plug the USB end of the cable into my laptop running Windows XP. That's it. The drive appears within 5 seconds and is ready to use.

The rotation speed is rated at 7200RPM, which helps in the quick transfers. Again, I have not had the drive for long, but for now it seems rugged and sturdy. The only possible ding against it would be that the included USB cable is a little short. But that is truly a minor issue.

Good but one slight problem
by falcanary ,Sep 06 '05
Pros: Simple to use. Plug it in and you're done.
Cons: Can locks up screens using USB 1.0 with Windows 2000 or before.
I have read the previous 3 reviews before me. I have to admit I've only had it for a week. It seems to work fine but with one flaw.

It requires a USB 2.0 hi speed port. If WinXP detects it plugged into a 1.0 port, then a warning is displayed on the screen. It will warn you of slower speed using the 1.0 port.

Windows 2000 or before will not warn you and may lock up the screen causing you to perform a "hard" reboot.

I will keep this review for later update.

don't buy it
by juzhang ,Jun 11 '05
Pros: cheap
Cons: not reliable
I bought a 160GB last year. last week, it died. I got it during the last year new year sale with some rebate. It is working fine until suddenly the motor started making clanking sound, and that is it. I called Westen Digital, and the answer is (as usual) " we are sorry, but there is nothing we can do." with 15 years of hardware engineering career, i must say that this is a poor product with poor QA and poor design. If you are ever considering of buying a WDC hard disk, think twice. BTW, i went back to Fry's asking the sales guy. They all said that i am not the only one complaining WDC HD. I know the product i had is not this one, but i am only sharing my experience here.

Owned for 2 Years used on 2 laptops.
by johnnyh002002 ,Aug 22 '07
Pros: Small, easy, no external power supply needed.
Cons: Needs software to control access.
I have owned this WD passport for two years. I purchased it at Staples. It was on sale and I can't be happier. I have used it on two different laptops and have had zero problems. I did have the message with one laptop supporting usb 1.0 but it still ran. My current laptop is usb 2.0. I have heard of problems but I guess I have been lucky. I store photography projects on it totaling several thousand pictures. I have even told several friends to buy this unit and have had no complaints.

Just an observation. Posters should place opinions on the model they own in the proper place and not rate 180 gig drives on the 60 gig page.

It failed after 11 days...!
by khking ,Jun 20 '05
Pros: None, it failed within 11 days.
Cons: Poor build quality, virtually no customer support, AVOID
Folks: Beware of this hard drive. It failed after just 11 days. Shame on Western Digital. I had read other reviews saying that Western Digital Hard drives were prone to fail, but I really thought that it was more of an anomaly and exception.

But now having experienced this the hard way, wasting my time and money, I urge you to think twice about buying their products.

WD120 Failed after 6 months
by rockdirector ,Feb 05 '07

Cons: Failed within 6 months
Think twice before entrusting important data to this drive.

My Passport 120 failed after about six months of offline storage use.
