Highly recommended DVD Player

by krenablunschi , Dec 18 '03
Pros: Great screen size for $ Plays all formats tried, Compact size = easy travel
Cons: Sound without headphones is a bit "tinny" but not worth complaining about
I bought this DVD player for my children to view in my van. I wanted a screen large enough for them both to enjoy and I didn't want to pay alot for it. The screen looks good no matter what angle you view it from. The sound is a little "tinny" sounding ...

It's a mixed bag! ==> Not anymore!

by agramer , Oct 20 '03
Pros: Rotating screen, great resolution, very durable
Cons: None that I can think of.
I have purchased this particular unit about a month ago. The features that got me thinking about this unit were rotating screen, multi-zone DVD playing, the size of the screen, to mention a few. Whereas all these features are working quite well, the ...

Cheap Display - you get what you pay for
by kathybong ,Sep 09 '05
Pros: Bigger screen
Cons: LCD display quality like I'm watching VHS instead of DVD quality on this screen.
The display can be rotated but only good when you're watching on the left side but when you are on the right side you cannot do that. The quality of the display is very poor. The display is not what you see in other brand -crisp and clear.
You can buy cheap or bid this from known store and you get what you pay for. This model is advertised as PDV-0800S (with S) so that you cannot search it from known comparison site.

Died
by evanman ,Mar 21 '04
Pros: While it worked, it was easy to use and had a great picture.
Cons: It stopped working 3 weeks after we purchased it.
I bought the this DVD player because of it's swivel screen, and great picture. It worked well for our first on-road-the-road-trip. However, on our second road trip (3 weeks after we purchased the unit), it just wouldn't come on. The power light was on but the dvd wouldn't spin. I tried different power sources, changing dvd's and waiting to turn it on again. It was a very disappointing beginning for our trip. I'm taking this unit back tomorrow and I hope they won't give me a hard time about getting a refund (or another unit). If you get this unit, look into an extended warranty plan.

Decent portable player
by flintweiss ,Nov 01 '03
Pros: - swivel screen with image flip - less expensive than other brands
Cons: - Flimsy disc door - Needs rubber feet. - Many remote only controls.
- This a decent portable player. It does all the stuff the rest of the portable players do: plays dvds, audio cds, mp3 cds, photo discs. I had no problem playing dvds or audio cds although I have yet to try mp3 or photo disc.

- Another reveiwer mentioned an issue with full-size discs or full size mode. My player did not exhibit those problems.

- The most intriguing thing about this model is that the screen swivels around and folds back on top of the unit. This allows for a compact footprint "video pad" with the control safely tucked away under the screen.

- The battery attaches to the bottom of the unit becoming an integrated piece. Unfortunately, the instructions require you to remove the battery when using the AC or car/DC adapters to play a movie (ie you shouldn't charge and play a movie at the same time).

- The cost for this items from Best Buy was $100 less than the nifty rubberized Toshiba 7" player.

Does not play some DVD-Rs
by jmkrueger ,Feb 16 '04
Pros: Nice screen, easy to use, rotating screen.
Cons: Can't play some DVD-Rs!
I loved this player until I tried to play some of my DVD-R discs from The History Channel. I bought this player primarily for educational purposes - I show a lot of videos in my classes. The player can't play some DVD-Rs successfully - there are skips about every 20 seconds. Even though I really like everything else about the polaroid player, I'm going to have to return it.

If you don't use DVD-R, it's great. I didn't notice any of the image "bending" reported in the other reviews and I tried a variety of different types of discs. I also thought the sound was fine.

Great Little Player - Slight Problem With Top of Screen
by nbr_uk ,Dec 15 '03
Pros: Rotating Screen, In-car Adapter Included, Can Configure to Multi-region
Cons: Slight skewing of Picture on Top in 'full screen' mode. Slight problem with in-car adapter
This unit is very good quality and a reasonable price. The rotating screen is it's best feature, which allow you much more flexibility in viewing. Picture quality is good with a decent enough field of vision to allow 2 people to get a good view. Sound quality is quite poor through the speakers (which seems normal for portable dvd players), but has real depth of sound when you listen through headphones.
I found a slight problem with the in-car adapter which seems to fall out of the a/c socket quite easily.
I had the same problem as mentioned by a previous reviewer. There is an annoying skewing of the picture to the left at about the 1/8th of an inch at the top of the screen. Fine for 2.35:1 ratio but really shows up on 1.65:1 films (in full screen mode). It comes and goes, so I am not sure what the problem is.

NICE surprise, nice product
by fastindy ,Apr 14 '04
Pros: Price, value, performance, excellent color, love the swivel screen and ability to rotate the screen, great ease of use.
Cons: Audio good but could be better, battery life ok
This unit is underrated for the price/value. Purchased March 04 (from Avalon - stay away from them !!!) We primarily used it in the car for spring break with the family on a long road trip. To date I have played at least 50 DVD's. NEVER 1 problem. Good color, nice and bright, easy to use, only minor flaw is battery life (3 hours) and slightly weak speakers - but I avoided both by using a adapter and using my car audio, and I used the supplied DC adapter for power.

Pros: Swivel screen is great for viewing even for two. Simple to use.

Great DVD Player !
by mg2018 ,Dec 10 '03
Pros: Screen, Flexible view, Good Sound
Cons: None thus far
Bright Screen, Adjustable Color, Brightness. Good Stereo sound, remote, large battery, plays my DVD+RW recorded DVD without problems. This can fold on itself like a PC tablet, it has outputs for regular TV, Stereo and DVD Recording. There is a nice credit card type remote, the battery must be detached however before using it in the car or AC.
It has a great size picture, plays regular DVD and widescreen. Plays other types of CD/DVD's as well. This was well worth the wait. I would highly recommend this to everyone.

Good but significant problem
by rnckr ,Jan 03 '04
Pros: Price and pivoting screen.
Cons: Significant display problem.
Like the other reviewer, I discovered that when a widescreen movie that took up the entire screen was played the top half an inch was bent to the left at about a 45 degree angle. I checked other 8" Polaroid players and the 7" version and they did the exact same thing. It happened on multiple DVD's and not on players manufactured by another company. I had to play with the different screen modes to duplicate the problem. It only happened in widescreen mode with a widescreen DVD playing. It is very distracting to watch a movie with this problem.

The pivoting screen is a neat feature and the sound is adequate.
