Lyra RD1090

Pros: MP3Pro Playback Cons: No Belt Clip
This is not my first MP3 player, but it is definitely the best. Lots of memory (256k!), easy installation of the software, and the ability to play MP3Pro files is a HUGE benefit. Files transfer quickly, and playback easily. I recommend re-recording them in MP3Pro VBR format, with DFX enhancements. They sound great!
The FM radio isn't the best, but works fine at the gym (getting reception from the TVs is fine), which is why I wanted the radio in the first place.
My only complaint is that there is no belt clip. I prefer running with the MP3 on my belt than around my arm (it only comes with an arm band), but other than that, the player is really solid. I like it better than the Rio Clio I had (although I miss the stopwatch).
Good product!

Great little MP3 player
by pdieten ,Dec 30 '03
Pros: Works exactly as expected, easy to use Cons: Needs a belt clip.
Have been using for a few days now and have been extremely pleased. In addition to the usual usage, I use mine for a rather unusual purpose - attaching to antique radios to play both FM and old time radio broadcasts which are available in MP3 format. Operation is intuitive, even for someone like me who has never owned a solid-state MP3 player before. There's plenty of RAM to handle lots of OTR shows, which are around 7MB each, and a slot for a card to hold more. It's handled every MP3 I've thrown at it, even with low bitrates. The sound quality is perfect and the unit is unobtrusive. And transferring files from the computer is much faster than I expected; just a couple of minutes will fill the unit with 16 hours of programming. I've been extremely pleased.
I do wish it had a belt clip for when I carry it though - I never got used to an arm band.

Pretty nice, all-in-all
by slagish ,Jun 08 '04
Pros: * stores files * upgradeable * no software required Cons: * clippy headphones * no album/directory skip * NO BELT CLIP
This is a pretty nice little MP3 player.
I needed three things:
* upgradeable memory
* ability to store files other than music files
* no silly software necessary to just transfer an MP3
The Lyra does all this.
The sound quality is quite good, overall. I wish earbud earphones were supplied rather than the silly clip-it-right-to-your-ear ones provided, as good-sounding as they are. The sound volume is fairly loud, not ear-splitting but loud enough to be uncomfortable for some songs.
I don't like:
* no belt clip (RCA are you listening?)
* no album skip -- you have to push Next as many times as it takes to get you through an album to another, and it is slow doing this
* the headphones

more bounce to the ounce
by jhead03 ,Aug 26 '04
Pros: great sound, easy to use, lots of space, decent price.
Cons: eats batteries like crazy. better invest in rechargables.
This player is the...well you know. Seriously, this device has alot of power and great sound quality. And you cant beat the price, 256MB plus upgradeable not to mention AM/FM tuner for under $200. Just try to do better than that, you'll be hard pressed. I think this is a righteous little jukebox prefect for the gym or people on the go who want a nice MP3 player with plenty of storage but dont want to spend a ridiculous amount of green.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY
by mesj ,Jan 26 '05
Pros: SMALL Cons: BAD TECH. SUPPORT, POOR DIRECTIONS, POOR QUALITY. AND MUCH MORE NOT ENOUGH SPACE TO LIST.
I BOUGHT THIS FROM CIRCUIT CITY. FIRST I HAD PROBLEMS WITH DOWNLOADING AND I CALLED THE TECH. SUPPORT AFTER I SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR 30 MINS. I FINALLY FOUND A NUMBER AND THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT FOR MYSELF. THEN I WAS ON THE TREADMILL AND GOT TO TRACK 22 AND IT FROZE. I COULDN'T TURN IT OFF OR ANYTHING. I HAD TO TAKE THE BATTERIES OUT TO CUT IT OFF. THEN I RETRIED AND IT DID IT AGAIN. BY THIS POINT I WAS SICK OF IT. I TOOK IT BACK AND EXCHANGED IT FOR A SAMSUNG INSTEAD, WORTH THE MONEY. DON'T BUY RCA I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH AN RCA TV ONCE TOO.

Lyra 1090 is Great
by well47 ,Nov 17 '06
Pros: Great sound, solid parts and good vol. control buttons Cons: won't start up in the middle of a track, need to repeat from the beginning.
I've had my player for 4 yrs and play it everyday while walking. You can insert an additional memory card and have plenty of music to keep you happy. Player is light and very solid. I love mine !!
