Pros: 6.1 receiver with famed Onkyo name; feature-rich; 7.1 pre-outs, but only 6 channels are powered Cons: Seriously flawed design, speaker clicking noises, audio dropout problems; terrible warranty
I checked some reviews before my purchase of the Onkyo TX-DS797 receiver. Onkyo has an excellent reputation for higher end audio components. This unit is a subject of a sterling review on CNET and I bought a used unit to save some money. Unfortunately,...

Superb THX Receiver
by twox6spds ,Dec 06 '03
Pros: Musicality, power, ease of set up, sound is beautiful. Cons: black panel face, nice but would've bought silver if they had it.
I've had the TXDS 797 THX receiver for over a year. No problems. This is a superb receiver. Uses almost the identical front end as the Integra DTC 9.4 processor. The big Onkyo's processor decodes THX, DTS, etc. I've heard a similar system to mine using the Integra 9.4 processor and Anthem outboard amp - not much difference. The 797 has 6x100 watts of powerful onboard amplification. The processing section uses high quality 192 kHz/24-bit DACs on all channels. I use it for home theater and high res music - SACD (Philips SACD1000) and DVD Audio (Toshiba SD9200) The Onkyo is a musical instrument. Soundstage is enormous, detail excellent, dynamics excellent and quick. I replaced a top-of-the-line Harman Kardon AVR 65 with the Onkyo. The Onk is simply much better for music or HT. I haven't had any problems, no weird noises, but I bought mine new.

Great all round amp with...
by celica77_dt3000 ,Oct 15 '02
Great all round amp with just brute force features and power. Ask it and it can do it but you might need to dig in the manual. Not as feature rich as amps that cost 100's less but then again how many tweaks do you want to do. I use the horse power and this amp brings it home.
