Rival 8420-TB Ice Cream Maker

Very short lived
Cheap motor
Not dependable
Definitely need a backup

I purchased the Rival 8420 a few years back. I used the unit 5 times, then it quit working. No hum, no growl, no nothing.  I like the the machine when it was working. I purchase the Rival 8430 because I want to make my own ice cream. Its stopped working after about 8 quarts.  I average about 2 quarts per year. I would not purchase this machine again.  I will be buying another Ice cream machine but from a different manufacture. I guess I got whatI paid for. I will be more careful in my purchases the next time around with Ice Cream machines. 

Pros: Good machine for price.
Cons: Defective aluminum parts.

I bought two of these a few years ago because they were hard to find, and in case one of them broke.

Sure enough, one of them did - but not before it malfunctioned and ruined a batch of ice cream. For some reason the dasher did not engage the central drive gear. As a result the ice cream did not mix and freeze properly. But that wasn't the main problem. While the machine was operating, aluminum shavings fell out of the unit and into the cream, ruining it.

Perhaps this particular machine had a manufacturing defect. I have never had a problem with the other one. I plan to buy another one to replace the one that broke, although I don't care if it is made by Rival.
