I purchased my 85x at the end of September 2005. It has been nothing but hassles since I purchased it. The good thing is the removable bin so I don't have to take the whole thing up to the garbage can. The bad things are many. The BIN fills up way to fast. The shredding teeth do not get rid of the paper so it continues to shred the paper it has already shredded. There is a bar in the middle of the shredding teeth that holds on to the paper and makes it very hard to clean out the teeth. I looked to see in the owner's manual if I was supposed to remove the bar and couldn't find anything about it.

I would not recommend this shredder. I've owned 2 previous to this one and if I remembered the brands I would recommend them, but don't remember the brands. I broke the other 2 because I thought they could shred CD's, but they couldn't.

I loved this shredder once I bought it. 5 Months later , it decides to quit on me. Royal only gives a 3 month warranty, great, now I'm out $55. An employee at another store told me they stopped carrying the Royal line because they saw a lot of them coming back broken. Even the high end shredders were breaking. NO RELIABILITY!!!

Before I purchased this shredder I searched the web for reviews and found only 1 that was negative. The buyer stated that his shredder did not last a year. The motor on my unit burnt within 4 months. The unit was used between 10 - 20 minutes a week. Just before the motor gave out, the unit stopped shutting off automatically after the papers were shredded. The switch had to be turned to the OFF position to get the motor to stop. A couple of times after the unit exhibited this symptom, the motor burnt. The motor on this unit is very loud. My previous shredder lasted me 10 years but I could not find the manufacturer in the marketplace or I would have stuck with their product. I fell for Royal's price, a cross-cut shredder for $50. You know what they say - you get what you pay for.

Pros: Pull out bin is a nice feature. It prevents shredder mess on the floor.
Cons: The shredder has no power, jams easily and is noisy. Not recommended. Save your money.

The shredder was a gift from my husband. It did not work correctly right out of the box! It was already jammed up! There were clumps of shredded paper jammed in the teeth, which I removed most of. Even then, it could barely handle one sheet of paper. And even though the box indicates it can shred credit cards--it doesn't. Just makes a loud noise and stops working. I did like the pull out bin. But it the unit does not work, then there is nothing going in the bin to dump anyway. The warranty states not to return the product to the point of sale, but to contact Royal instead. You must contact Royal by phone, since they do not have any online customer service. Then you will be directed to write in and hopefully you will receive a response. The cost of shipping makes you reconsider whether or not you want to go through this hassle. So Royal wins, you get a product guaranteed to fail, and Royal gets your money. Buyers- please check the product forums before making any purchase of this type

Realizing the crosscut-style shredder was the way to go, I snapped up this Royal when Target had them on sale. Although it worked without issues during the warranty period (90 days), it began to fail shortly thereafter -- and I am not by any means a power user. One or two other reviews have mentioned the paper jamming in the cutters, which has been the problem I observed; additionally, at least one set of plastic guides and the cutting teeth have completely failed, leaving a gap in the cutters. I have resorted to hand-removal of jammed paper on numerous occasions (unplugging the unit first, of course!) but the additional run-time gained after cleaning is less each time and I am now looking for a better-built, longer-lasting product. It won't be a higher-priced Royal.

I bought this because it had the smallest shred size for its price point. Unfortunately, the reported shred size is inaccurate. By my measurements, the shred size is actually .17x1.5 inches.

Excellent Royal Product - I got this at Target in store, runs like a heavy duty office machine. Cross Cut Confetti, can't ask for more and you can just add paper without touching any switch. Highly Recommend!
