Pros: Excellent output and speed.
Excellent color and saturation.

Mac OS X drivers Cons: Poor software package (all Mac OS Classic)
Flimsy slide/film cover
Abstract: Scanners produced by other manufacturers simply can't match the quality of the output and performance of this scanner (CanoScan 5000F)at this price. I highly recommend it.

Pros: Fast scanning speed, slide/negative adapter, and high optical resolution. Cons: Occasional glitches, flimsy backlight cover, and sometimes difficult to remove slides.
I bought this scanner shortly after Christmas 2002 for its ability to scan slides and negatives. It is about a month later at this time and I have scanned several hundred slides and a few photos.
Pros: Easy to use. Decent software. Great photo scanner. Decent slide scanner. Cons: Poor USB 2.0 support.
Like Berkelydb, with whom I have been corresponding, I have had nothing but grief installing and running this scanner. I am running it under Win XP but the scanner refuses to work well with USB 2.0, though occasionally I can get a scan at USB 2.0...
Pros: True colors, great image quality, very fast Cons: dust under glass, flaky driver
I now have a new baby in the household, and wanted to be able to scan good quality images to print out for family members and for archival purposes. I previously had a cheap scanport SQ300. That unit was very reliable but didn't make great scans. ...
Pros: Scans photos well -- when it's working.. Cons: Apparently poor drivers -- won't install(and won't say why) on two of my three PCs.
I have three PCs, and only one of these would recognize the device as a scanner.
I've spent not just hours, but several full days doing such things as zeroing out the HDD, formatting and doing a clean install of the OS (Win98 and WinXP),...
Pros: Excellent image quality - sharpness, natural colors. Easy install and operation. Cons: Noise, rather bulky design.
If you are looking for a high quality in scanned images, for example scanning your family archives, negatives, or working with other graphics this is a great buy. The scanner simply gives excellent images with geniune colors and high resolution ...
Pros: Truly plug'n'play XP compatible - a bargain for the quality Cons: Slightly cumbersome software
Because of bad experiences with a Visioneer product (and their customer support) after switching to XP, I waited for the next generation of scanner to come along, hoping for true USB plug'n'play compatibility. I am thrilled with the Canon 5000F. Quality...
Pros: None Cons: The Product does not work with Windows XP
I bought this Scanner from NewEgg which had a no return policy on it. This should have been a tip off. I bought it based on the high ratings given to it by PC World. I think they must rate products by how much advertising money is spent in their ...
Pros: Fast, low-cost, great quality Cons: Not VueScan compatible, middling slide and film scans
Overall, I'm very happy with the Canon CanoScan 5000F. Color accuracy is top notch, low noise with reflective scans, quick to scan (even at 300dpi using USB 1.1) given its $199 retail price - a terrific price.
Great Scanner, Excellent Resolution, Good Color ,User Friendly by ordwayjv1 ,Jan 18 '04
Pros: Excellent scanning without a lot of image editing...user friendly, fair price. Cons: Construction: back hinges are a little loose for me.
I bought a ScanMaker 6800 with digital ICE that can't hold a candle to the CanoScan 5000F. The CanoScan 5000F has sharper resolution and better color than the Microtek 6800
scanner. With the CanoScan 5000F you don't need to spend a lot of time in Photoshop cleaning up the scan. This saves time and makes push button scanning a delight!
The software package is good...user friendly. The OCR software by OmniPage is excellent. Scan text and graphics right into a Word document for editing. There is even a wizard to help you step by step to make the correct settings for your OR scan.
I bought the Microtek ScanMaker 6800 before the CanoScan 5000F. I wish it would have been the other way around.
I have been extremely disappointed by this scanner. I bought it new a few months ago, but found that little spots appear on scanned photos for 600dpi and higher. I've cleaned the scan bed and photos. The problem appears to be on the other side of the glass. To get half-way decent scans, you end up having to hunt for an area of the scan bed that has the fewest marks. Cannon sent me a replacement (referb.) which has the same problem but to a lesser degree. A third scanner is supposedly on its way.
The whole experience has been less than positive and makes me question Cannon's quality control process. It's highly unlikely I'll be purchasing another Canon scanner in the future.
I tried to install this scanner on three machines: Two Win 98 machines and one XP Pro.
It would only install on one of the Win98 boxes.
Hours on the phone with Canon support(a third-party company yielded no workable solution. Canon itself does not return email messages to support.
The install error is that the scanner is not recognized within Windows device manager.
This is my experience. You may get lucky and it might work for you(very nice scans on the one workable PC), but you 'd be better off buying it from a place that will refund 100% if it won't install. I got lucky and techonweb allowed me to return it.
