Living the Life of a Recluse in Silent Hill 4: The Room

by Mike_Bracken Mike_Bracken is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Games, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Oct 06 '04
Pros: Creepy story is present and accounted for.
Cons: The new inventory system sucks, and the camera needs to die.
During the course of my career as a horror film critic, I've complained about one thing time and time again: sequels. While sequels have worked their way into every genre of film these days, no one kind of movie has had their credibility decimated more ...

Cabin Fever

by JiggyJay Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Oct 08 '04
Pros: Beautiful graphics, intriguing and scary story line
Cons: Still too short, awkward battles
The Silent Hill series has been scaring the gaming community circa 1999 when the first game debuted on the Playstation console. Since then the franchise has been a cult classic amongst horror fans, but is still brooding in Resident Evil’s shadow—even ...

The Room of Doom, the Plane of Pain, and the Man Ever-sinking Into its Claim.

by ChromeKiller Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Sep 16 '04
Pros: Interesting new two-way system. One world's yours, and the other's theirs.
Cons: More weird than scary, Silent Hill 4 removes some of the series' traditional possessions.
Inside and outside, there's a darkness waiting, watching, lurking, levitating, sneering, and scaring whether you notice it or not. Konami's mind has been affected by its sickness, its madness, and its wrath. It wants to get you. It wants to find you. It ...

Spills, thrills and spine rattling chills.

by karentsang , Jun 22 '04
Pros: Unrivaled atmosphere of pure horror, terror and disgust.
Cons: Inconvenience with control & camera angles.
This is the fourth day after the official release of the game here in Hong Kong. I'll try to be non-specific in this review so you get maximum discovery value from your own game-play. Straight up: You play Henry Townsend who wakes up from a ...

The fun is in there... somewhere

by reggaehonour , Jul 24 '05
Pros: Great sound and graphics, some absolutely ghoulish concepts and chilling music
Cons: Uneven fun, deadly slow beginning, bored-sounding voice actors, room possession, inventory overflow, load times
CAUTION: A FEW SPOILERS. When I heard the hushed, despondent singing of "Room of Angel", Silent Hill 4's teaser song, my ears pricked up immediately. Would Silent Hill 4 offer a quantum advance over Silent Hill 3's childish, butchered storyline, ...

Great Soundtrack, Horrible Game.

by michael45 , May 21 '08
Pros: The game sets an unsettling tone.
Cons: Which the gameplay smashes with a wrecking ball.
One of my friends knew that I was a big fan of Silent Hill, so much to my surprise he came up to me out of the blue one day and told me that the newest installment of the series, The Room, had come out today and he had preordered it for me the previous ...

Takes place in Ashfield NOT Silent Hill

by ariels1200 , Nov 11 '04
Pros: graphics are ok.
Cons: first person view, inventory system.
Taking place in the city of South Ashfield, instead of Silent Hill this time and centers mainly on an ill-fated apartment building, one that lurks evil. What's the evil you say? Will it involve's new demons such as spirit's and what appear's to be ...

Silent Hill 4: The Room For The PS2

by slimshady71487 , Aug 31 '08
Pros: Great horror game
Cons: None at all
This is the fourth game in the Silent Hill series and it is also the scariest one in the set. You play as Henry this time and when he awakes in his apartment room he finds his front door chained up from the inside. Locked and bolted, he can't escape the ...

Interesting but gets old

by uvachief , Dec 15 '04
Pros: Longevity, storyline, more thinking than fighting
Cons: Repetitive
I have not played any of the other Silent Hill games. This was my first one. Got good reviews so I bought a used copy on ebay for $25.00. Its an interesting title. Odd and requires you to think. It isn't just walk forward, trigger monster, kill ...

Silent Hill 4 - You'll be disappointed.
by xris_rock ,Apr 01 '05
Pros: Hopefully SH5 will restore our faith.
Cons: Substandard GFX engine. No atmosphere. Bad animation. Bad music. Weak story.
Silent Hill 3 was a masterpiece. SH4 is a serious anti-climax.

The graphics engine is not nearly as impressive. No dynamic shadows and such and the animation of the main character seems to be ridiculously robotic. The darkness, bloodied walls and rusted metal which played such a crucial role in SH3 are absent, as one would expect in a theme change as dramatic as this, but they aren't replaced by anything similarly disturbing.

The background music fails to create a tense mood like that of SH3.

The last half of the game is spent revisiting worlds you've already been too which drove the last nail into the coffin for me.

The only aspect which impressed me was the first person perspective on the main characters apartment.

Overall, one can't help get the feeling that this project was rushed. The discriminating SH fan will be disappointed.

What a game!
by jumbojet123 ,Jan 11 '07
Pros: -New charge up weapons system -A scary game -Good storyline -Very addictive
Cons: -Going back to apartment gives levels feeling -Lack of firearms -Not for faint hearted
What a great game released by Konami. Definitely disturbing, and I think that if silent hill 5 is as good as this then it could be the greatest game of all time.

The thing which I funny (call me sad if you like) was when you phone 555 3750. That noise just always brings a smile to my face.

I won't ruin anything but the storyline was the best thing about it. I sat there for ages pondering whether the Don't go out Walter was to Walter or from him.

Buy Silent Hill 3 Instead
by dminfosys ,Nov 27 '04
Pros: It is still Silent Hill-Barely
Cons: No involvement, true horror or shock, worst of the four games
If you loved the first three like I did, you are going to be disappointed like me. 3 follows the original, 2 gave us a different perspective, but trying to change too much sucks. Make it fresh, new people, intertwining story, but not a 180 degree turn around.
Now you have ghosts that keep coming and zap your health, but all you can do is run? What is up with that-this ain't Clock Tower 3! We get no pre-story, no build up, no suspense. Stop reading here if you want to avoid a couple spoilers.
You wake up locked in your apartment with chains on the door, so why not just bust out a window rather than crawl through some creepy sewer hole. Or grab a screwdriver and pop the locks. Bust a hole in the neighboring apartment.
It is just a silly romp trying to give us something new. Just give us something good-the story line matters. You have to feel like you are involved. This game fails. I hope RE 4 is less disappointing, but I have a feeling it will be.
Rent it unless you are a hard core fanatic.
