USB Ports Problem / Sony unresponsive
by lemonfresh ,Oct 15 '05
Pros: nice screen, great when it worked Cons: awful customer service, poorly made USB ports
The USB ports on the side of my computer are poorly made. Though all I did was use them, and never used force or did anything at all to push them in, they became pushed into the computer and caused the motherboard to be damaged. I was horrified by the customer service I received. Apparently, "physical damage" is not covered by the warranty. Customer service is acting like it is my fault that the USB ports are pushed into the computer, thereby ruining the motherboard. If I pushed them in with a hammer, okay, that would make sense. However, all I did was use the ports to attach my computer to my printer every so often. It shouldn't be so poorly made that I should worry about damaging my motherboard for using my printer.

A decent but.
by a1chubbs ,Oct 21 '06
Pros: Big Screen, Stays Cool, Easy to use, and Reliablity. Cons: Manufacurer power adaptor defect, Heavy, and Hinge Cracks.
This computer has been a rollercoaster of defects and benifits. When i first got the PCG-K33 i was impressed with its performance, looks, and also with its good VAIO reputation. But after normal laptop use, the female power adaptors prongs broke and i had to send it in to my extended warranty provider "Not Sony Thank God," and it was replaced with a much smarter and simpler designed one with no problem. Soon after it got back i noticed a crack forming on the right screen hinge that keeps on getting bigger. I did some research and this is a very common thing with laptops and shouldent be a big deal at all. But other than the described defects its does better and more reliable "hardware and software" wise than all the other laptops i have ever owned. Expecially the HP and Compacs!

Sony K-33
by mnstang ,Feb 04 '05
Pros: Fast processor, The screen is beautiful, Wi-Fi built-in, fast start-up, quality built. Cons: Battery life----The only complaint!
I have had many a laptop before this one. I am telling ya that this is the best laptop I have ever had for the price. If you compare equal laptops that have the same features as this one, the sony k33 will have em beat! First of all, the XBRITE 15.4 inch WIDESCREEN is visually stunning! It is like watching a Plasma screen, BEAUTIFUL! DVD's come to life. No choppy-ness at all. It looks High-Def. The only gripe is of course the usual for big sony laptops is the battery life. After charging it full, Expect to get only about 1.5 hours out of it. (watching a DVD) I would recommend getting a verified Sony RE-placement battery. (The same one that comes with the computer) That way you can guarantee that you will finish your movie. Just doing basic internet surfing and office applications you can squeeze a full 2 hours out of the battery. Overall this guy is AWESOME, SOny builds quality not quantity as HP and Compaq does. Once by once this laptop will beat the pants off any competitor.

Great laptop except for the following
by camus1 ,Jan 30 '05
Pros: great screen resolution, easy to set-up wireless dsl Cons: The touchpad should be on the right/left side. Awkward angle causes cramping.
Great resolution, fast, easy wireless set-up. However, when I noticed the socket on the back of the laptop where the cable for the adapter is attached is a male port (the end of the adapter for the cable is also 'male'), after it kept falling out, it became a nightmare dealing with SONY.
Circuit City, where I purchased the laptop, confirmed the problem over the phone with SONY whereupon SONY began wondering if Circuit City did something to the laptop.
Asking for a replacement ( I cannot afford to send it in for repair because I need it for my work ) was equally as nightmareish. Circuit City offered a direct swap when they get their new shipment in, with the understanding SONY will make it good. In the meantime, SONY appears unwilling at this time to make up the difference in any cost associated with a swap in the event the new laptops are more expensive.
I do think this was an anomaly; however I do not think SONY's abhorrent customer service skills are new.

Thank god it still works
by xldu ,Jan 05 '07
Pros: The screen, perfect for students with reasonable expectations Cons: Battery life, charger, loud fan, hibernate option does not work
I have had this laptop for 2 years and it still works. The screen on this laptop is amazing. The Xbrite screen is what makes this laptop so great. For students this is a great laptop. Simple to use and has all the features a student needs such as wireless. For the few problems that I have had, tech support was accomodating to my issues.
The complaints I have about this laptop are that the hibernate function doesn't work anymore, so I either turn it off or set it to stand-by if I am going to be away from the computer for a significant amount of time. The battery life is horrible and the charger is huge. The charger weighs as much as the laptop itself! Lastly, the fan is unusually loud and in a lecture hall everyone can hear the fan running. Apparently, it was stated that this is a common problem with Pentium 4 processors. I don't think so, I think I just got a semi-defective laptop.

Great computer for the money!
by empress66 ,Apr 26 '05
Pros: Reliable, fast, easy to operate, great screen resolution. Cons: A little heavy for frequent travelers.
I bought this computer 6 months ago after doing a lot of research. I didn't want something too high-end because it is for personal use but I wanted it fast! That it is. It is a slick machine and I have enjoyed using it. The screen resolution is wonderful. The colors are bright and it doesn't have too much reflection. The wireless internet is the only internet connection I use and this computer is extremely easy to set-up. The only downside to this computer is that it is a little heavy so if you need to travel with it a lot, that might get old. I am not really bothered by it though and I have traveled with it occasionally. Through the six months I have had zero crashes and only a couple freezes. It is a reliable computer. Battery power is not as long as they say it is but I have found that to be true with most laptops so I don't list it as a negative. Depending on what programs you are running, the battery life should be around 3 hours or so.

My first Laptop
by yaz929699 ,Dec 16 '05
Pros: Powerful, Stable, Exceptional PC Cons: Battery life
This is by far a superior PC. I always heard that Sony makes a good product, but had never experienced it first hand in a PC. After considering my options clearly and the cost of other laptops, I went to view this laptop first hand and was very impressed. In store it seemed to clearly handle all the demands placed upon it. I work in Molecular Biology, and I have used this platform to genome alignments and other complex work and it is impossible to crash this machine. It is quite impressive with one draw back and that is short battery life. If one is doing serious mobile work this might not be the solution for you. However, if you have access to electricity, this is a powerful portable desktop that should not be passed up on.
