Pros: Packed with features
Excellent keyboard
Excellent Character recognition Cons: could be a little wider
battery life ain't bad, but...
I changed over to Pocket PC operating system several years ago and try to make it work. But what a waste of time. After a recent losing battle with the HP iPaq 5455, I surrended and went back to the Palm OS, and this Sony Clie was the best move I could ...

Amazing, don't buy a laptop when this is available
by woodburymn ,Apr 02 '04
Pros: Every single feature listed. Cons: None.
I am new to PDAs, well sort-of, our house has three networked obscure Audreys running Palm OS which we use for internet, family calendar and caller ID.
This was a impulse purchase and I am not disappointed, it keeps amazing me.
The features are well documented but until you actually use a Clie UX40/50, they aren't appreciated. So easy to make a digital movie and send it via email, plays on Quicktime. Read an e-book. Surf the internet. This list goes on.
I bought the UX40 and one thing I think needs to be mentioned is that a simple bluetooth adapter is all that's needed to wireless connect to your internet service at home. I had been told that a bluetooth access point was required, but that is not true. The UX40 has bluetooth, the UX50 has bluetooth and WiFi.

Interesting product but terrible customer service
by steve53551 ,May 13 '04
Pros: Exciting features. Keyboard is fun to use. Liked the MP3 player and camera. Cons: Sony didn't honor warranty. Unit died within 3 months.
Initially I loved the features of this unit. It was really fun to use.
But then I started having problems with my unit display shortly after buying it. Customer service was difficult to reach. When the unit died altogether, customer service wasn't helpful and then refused to fix it. They blamed it on me (saying I had allowed it to become corroded). Since I took good care of the unit, keeping it dry and carrying it in my pocket, I would say any resulting corrosion to be a design flaw. This unit is too expensive to not be able to trust them to honor their warranty.

Shrunken Laptop
by zvanputten ,Sep 18 '04
Pros: Compact, easy to use, feature rich. Cons: No external keyboard. Small thumb keyboard. Short battery life.
I purchased this item on Ebay and found it for $300.00. It has been worth every penny. There are many features. This gadget is a digital voice recorder, video camera, still camera, appointment book, email client, game console, wordprocessor, calculator, phone book, and much more. I purchased this to replace my laptop for school, and have found that it is easier to use than my laptop in most cases. I would recommend this item for everyone who likes gadgets. I think that the only downfalls of this item is having to learn how to type fast with my thumbs, as well as the model being discontinued so accessories are not available in stores.

This thing is great
by llongley ,Dec 22 '03
Pros: Wide high quality screen, easy to use key board, multifunction, business, music and video. Cons: Cost, Cost, Cost... more wide screen software.
This is my first clie'. I've had a number to palm devices and found them to be useful and reliable. However, this is all that and fun to use. I am doing more and discovering more things that can be done with this thing.
With the addition of a memory stick I don't need to carry anything else. I can play mp3's watch movies and on and on. I especially like the wide screen but the key board took a little getting used to since I was used to graffiti. But the keyboard is easy to use not those tiny little keys you see on the others.
All and all this was a great investment and well worth the money.

My Best Clie Yet
by gogogadgetgo ,Mar 22 '04
Pros: Keyboard, Form factor, Features Cons: Software that utilizes screen orientation
This is my third Clie in four years. The first being an N710C upgraded to an N760C. Next was an NR70U. These were replaced recently by the UX40 and it is fantastic! On the previous units the MP3 remote control units broke and I was unable to replace them. This one the headphones plug directly into the unit so no remote volume, track selection or stop and start is available (not a big deal). The camera is better than the one available on the NR70U but still this is no replacement for a true digital camera (no flash).
There are some pre-OS5 programs that are not compatible with this, ie Seiko Smartpad II that I used all the time with the NR70U. This I feel is a software vendor issue and not Sony's. This is a fantastic unit nonetheless, and it fits into my pocket instead of on by belt!

Not as good as it looks
by stupider ,Jul 23 '04
Pros: Low res but useful camera, plays mp3s with very nice sound, keyboard attached. Cons: No organization to menus, short battery life cycle, battery difficult for user to replace.
My UX-50 is packed with power and function, but that is where the advantage stops. The software is not as intuitive as palm OS4 i had on my m515. This is a major disadvantage as it takes minutes to fine the applications i want to start. The OS4 had a sort and catagory feature which allows the user to view more frequently used apps while keeping less used apps on different menus. Since this device is supposed to enhance my daily organization and function, i decided to return to my m515. Additionally, the expanded memory chip is too easily disengaged while using and handling the unit. A locking feature would help.

The true meaning of PDA!
by lsravon ,Feb 06 '04
Pros: The ultimate PDA! Cons: NONE AT ALL
I can't say enough about this PDA. It is jam packed with features, i.e., camera, movie, photo album, MP3 player, organizer and on and on. All programs work without a glitch. Sony is number one with most electronics in my opinion and Sony designed the BEST KEY BOARD EVER. Everyone at work is envious of my Clie. I never go anywhere without it. Don't hesitate to spend the money - it is worth it. You can aggressively shop the price - I didn't pay the $600 tag. Try Datavision - the store is first class, too.
