Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-M1 Digital Camera DSCM1 - Stylish and Horrible

by dkozin dkozin is a Lead on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Sep 19 '05
Pros: Unusual style, rechargeable battery included, compact, sturdy, large LCD, histogram, good movie
Cons: Expensive, expensive memory, no manual control, poor ergonomics, image quality and noise levels
After I got my S ony DSC-M1 (DSCM1), I took it out the box and looked at it for about a minute, marveling its strange design. The camera/camcorder promises the best of both worlds: 5-Megapixel digital still pictures and ...

Looks sharp, but that's about it. Testing in Iraq now...

by Scheurmann , Aug 11 '05
Pros: Looks like a fast sports car, easy to use, pretty small
Cons: Lame battery, blurry pix, needs tripod to use effectively, strange design features, only 32meg stick
I bought this camera to replace my Sony DSC-S50, which was an OUTSTANDING 2.1 megapixel digital that served me faithfully since 1998. When I broke it (dropping a camera is NEVER good) while taking pictures on my tour of duty in Iraq, I wanted to replace ...

Expensive camera that doubles as a camcorder.

by denniskly , Jan 11 '05
Pros: video quality, sleek body, non-protruding lens, good LCD
Cons: pricey, short flash range, no optical viewfinder
Sony introduces DSC-M1 and it is quite a big step from the DSC-T1 that I purchased not too long ago. After returning the DSC-T1 I bought the DSC-M1 for approximately $100 more but I'm quite satisfied because this camera has quite a few improvements. A ...

Great Camera and a Happy Wife.

by bnscbill , Dec 12 '05
Pros: Separate photo and video buttons, great memory usage, great pictures and movies.
Cons: Some blurry pictures and jumpy video.
My wife wanted a smaller camera than the Sony F707 and she wanted to be able to shoot movies. I found the DSC-M1 that could fit the bill. It is definitely what she wanted. Small, cosmopolitan and slick. It shoots pictures with ease. I must ...

Terrible picture quality, awkward design

by czntvp , Oct 05 '05
Pros: metal body, and Sony name
Cons: Terrible photos, v. average movie cant compare to C5
I purchased the M1 to function as a digital camera and for some limted movie making. As the only hybrid available at the time it was an expensive but at least on paper a worthwhile option. So i buy the expensive pro duo memory stick and proceed to use ...

Amazing Camera from Sony

by det65 , Jun 15 '05
Pros: small, pictures and video, ease of use, fast
Cons: a little bit sensitive to shaking when taking videos using full zoom.
I decided on this Sony model for one reason: it can do both - pictures and videos and that in a decent quality. So far I am still in the learning state on how to use this camera to get the full benefits of it but I'm impressed about what all that little ...

Great all-rounder

by edsolman , Dec 07 '04
Pros: small, compact, does everything to a good quality.
Cons: Small buttons, slow zoom. Not a lot else.
I've just bought one of these (I'm in the UK but ordered it from B&H in the USA). I am very pleased. Does what it says. The camera is high standard and MPEG4 compression seems very clear. I've watched sample videos on my TV and they are excellent. Photos ...

Nice Idea - but Awkward to hold
by sprhnl ,Apr 12 '05
Pros: Great Idea
Cons: Falls out of your hand. Could be expensive if you forget the wriststrap.
Bought this for the same reason as others (dual purpose). I found out quickly though, that when open, the camera is unbalanced (weight to tha left) and that I now had to use my thumb to operate the shutter rather than my index finger.

In addition to this the cradle it sits in is flimsy and weighs maybe 10% of what the camera weighs. When you set the camera in it tips the cradle.

Whoever works on their Software package is getting overpaid even if they're doing it for free. You would think the packages would improve but they don't. Sony, you need some programmers. Call Apple or Microsoft or Adobe. Bite the bullet.

This is my 4th Sony camera and my 1st dissapointment.

Not quite ready for primetime
by carlosan2 ,Jan 12 '05
Pros: size, big screen, easy to use controls, MPEG4 compression.
Cons: Susceptible to shake, difficult to see screen in bright sunlight, software is very proprietary.
Great idea, medium execution.

The camera takes good, clear pictures in plenty of light. The biggest problem I have found with it is shake.
I have tried different ways of holding the M1 but consistently miss shots because of camera movement.
Both stills and videos suffer from this. Video is very jerky.

I was hoping not to have to buy a camcorder and get a single camera for both video and stills. I do not recommend this with the M1.

Further, I have not found any players other than the one Sony provides that will handle the MPEG4 format. I am underwhelmed with the Pixela software that Sony provides. (no DVD burn capability, etc. It seems that Sony has released another proprietary product.

The concept of combining video and still capabilities in one device is very attractive to me, I wish this product could do it.
