Pros: Progressive Scan capable w/ Easy Menu Setup and support for 10 different video formats Cons: Does not have a digital optical output for audio
Are you looking for a DVD player that will not make you go nuts when you try to play a DVD? Then look no further! Sony has introduced the DVP-NS425 as a rather inexpensive, but feature laden DVD player that will more than satisfy most of your ...
Pros: Reasonably Priced, Plays multiple formats, easy to use. Cons: Less than user friendly remote, no digital audio outs.
Background I purchased my Sony DVP-NS425P DVD Player, about a week after the Philips DVD750VR DVD/VCR Player I originally bought died on me after owning it for about 1 month. I guess I've had the Sony now for nearly 6 months and it is still ...
Pros: Excellent sound, great picture quality, very easy to use, a good bargain. Cons: No zoom feature. (But then again...that's why they make fullscreen versions of movies).

Pros: worked ok for 8 months for light usage Cons: suddenly failed after 8 months. sony won't help you
my sony dvd player model ns425p worked ok for 8 months. i only used it to watch a few dvds a month.
one day it failed and refused to read any more dvds.
i cleaned it out with compressed air, according to instructions from sony support.
i tried out brand new dvds on it.
it still didnt work
Sony offered to exchange it for another player of the same model for $63 tax. this is more than i paid for the player (about $60 including tax and delivery)
It's worked great for me... by frankometry ,Mar 19 '05
Pros: Easy to use, multiple formats, and has a nice, unassuming design. Cons: Front eject button doesn't work very well.
I've owned this handy little player for over a year now and it's been great. I Burn tv shows onto DVD with my Sony laptop, and listen to some mp3's too. The picture quality is excellent, very crisp (panning) and clear. I have a different Netflix disc going in and out of it daily, and so far no problems. The remote's not great but not bad, but I use my TV remote mostly. My TV is also a Sony (27 inch WEGA), I hope my gear lasts longer than some of the other posters
Pros: Easy to use, nice thin cabinet. Cons: Won't play all types of media as claimed.
I burn DVD-Rs that are read by 5 other DVD players with no problem, however, this Sony unit plays them with choppy pictures as if it doesn't have enough capacity to handle the data. A $30 Proton DVD player in my basement plays them flawlessly.
Avoid this DVD player and ANY DVD player made by JVC.
Read reviews for the NS325P on line and assumed they would carry over to the 425. Was a little concerned the reviews were written by marketing reps for SONY. There were two open boxes on the shelves, which should have been a red flag.
So I wasn't the only person to return it and buy another make and model.
Extremely difficult set up, ultimately found to be defective. Poorly written trouble shooting section.
Pros: No fuss, pretty faced DVD player. Cons: none
This DVD player has played hundreds of movies and has never had any issues. It has taken the abuse of a 2yr old, 4 yr old and an 8yr old. The progressive scan works as advertised and it plays all kinds of formats. I don't understand why others have had problems. We've had it for about a year ago and bought it at Best Buy for 99.99.
I don't know if it's just me or if other people are having bad luck with this player too. After trying two different players both of the drives died within a month. The brand Sony used to mean quality to me but now days it seems that any generic product can outperform them. You can try this player. Maybe it will work great for you but I will be moving on to a different company.
Sony Hits Bottom of the DVD Heap by sr71webmaster ,May 18 '04
Pros: Played fine until it broke (Laser burned out) Cons: This is the last Sony Item I will buy due to 90 day warranty
I bought this DVD player in December of 2003 at Best Buy. The Sony features looked great with the multiple formats and the Progressive Scan. The price at $99.95 was attractive. It worked fine up until May 2004 when it would not recognize any DVD.I would estimate it had played 30 movies. Played MP3's fine. Took it down to Best Buy for repairs and they charged $39.00 for shipping to the Repair Center. I got a phone call from them a week later stating the Laser was burned out and it would cost $109.00 (Labor) to repair it. Ummmm...Lets do the math, I could buy another brand, same price range and not have to contend with this piece of junk. I really love the 90 day parts and labor warranty. I think this means Sony is betting the product will not last over 90 days and this applys to all of Sony products!!! I used to have a lot of faith in Sony but this is the last Sony item I will ever buy. There is much better competitor products available in the market place.
Pros: None, unless you like to buy DVD players on a regular basis. Cons: It only lasted 6 months, and there's only a 90 day warrantee on it.
After having a problem with a DVD player of another brand, I elected to go with a more well-known one. I bought this DVD player from Best Buy in January of 2004. By July, it was unable to read any DVD. Seems as though other people have had the same problem with this same player.
Pros: Nothing good to say about this piece of garbage technology Cons: Broke after 5 months of light use.
After 5 months and after playing no more than 15 movies, the DVD player started acting up. After 1.5 to 2 hours, purple and green diagonal lines would obliterate the picture, although sound was not affected. Turning it on and off or hitting the progressive button on and off would correct the problem on a temporary basis. The problem would re-occur (within 15 minutes) and the "on/off fix" would work less and less until the picture would not come back unless the player was turned off for a day or so. So, I threw it off the back roof into a dumpster in the alley. I hate it when people sell me garbage. Amazing how the player started acting up shortly after Sony's 90 day warranty expired.
Pros: VERY GOOD DVD PLAYER! - Plays ALL formats of disks Cons: not a one!
a very good dvd player. i create vcd's & svcd & they play just perfect in this unit. i have had since xmas now & have had ZERO problems with the unit. it has a WIDE format of 'disks' it can play & that, to me at least, it very important & very good. most of the other units i have seen wont even play mp3 data cd's...pretty lame. this one will. so you can create a data cd with 100's of songs on it, pop it in & jam all nite long. VERY GOOD UNIT. well worth the approx $100 for it!
So far, so good at playing Netflix rentals by ffitzdotcom ,Mar 10 '04
Pros: After 13 Netflix DVDs, we have only had a problem with one. Cons: Slow powering on; does not play *invdividual video files* burned to a dvd or cd.
We bought a DVD player to play Netflix rentals... went with an inexpensive machine that had some nice features, but found numerous abused Netflix disks [common with them] would not play. We took a disk that would not play in our machine and went to a shop, trying it in a Sony DVP-NS425P DVD Player [they didn't have it hooked up to a TV, but we had earphones with us, having made note of where in the soundtrack the disk stopped playing]. The player worked, so we bought it and returned the earlier machine.
After 13 Netflix DVDs, we have only had a problem with one.
My techie son complains that the Sony doesn't power on fast enough and that it does not play individual video files burned to a dvd or cd - if you want to watch your own videos on it you have to burn it as a standard vcd or video dvd.
epinions.com rating process requires using multiple choice rating drop down menus, some of which are too explicit for my taste and the last ["durability"] makes little sense in my case, having only owned the machine for about a month.
