Pros: great sound quality, great power, big sound from a small unit, subwoofer shakes the walls. Cons: remote control doesn't work right, EQ seems to reset itself, speaker wires to short.
I purchased the Sony MHC-GX450 in late 2004, upgrading from an old Phillips stereo I had. I always wanted a Sony so i got one and am pleased with it despite its flaws. First, lets look at the good points of this particular system. It was low priced ...

Worst piece of electronics I have ever purchased.
by parker8888 ,May 02 '05
Pros: No pros. Cons: Constant malfunctions of all kinds. Absolute garbage.
After just a few months, the CD tray began to malfunction, and playing CD's was impossible. Sent to Sony repair under warranty, paid $$$ out of pocket for shipping (ouch!). A week after I got it back, the tuner stopped working. I will soon be paying as much in shipping as it would have cost to buy a new, better, unit! Believe me, it's worth an extra few bucks to buy something better, or at least something from a manufacturer with a better warranty and better customer service! Don't be fooled by the brand name, I was.

Shelf system like the bigger systems
by jamesjames12 ,Nov 08 '05
Pros: Shelf system comparible to larger systems, excellent 150 watt subwoofer, excellent speakers, surround mode Cons: no changing FM presets without remote, heavy
I like the surround mode which I think Sony does well so turn your xbox dolby surround on with this system and it even works with headphones plugged in. I've recorded streaming audio off the internet using the cassette recorder and it was excellent, great freq response. I can play MP3s using CD-RW. I've cranked up heavy metal with its groove mode on and no destortion up to 24 out of 30 and had people in other rooms tell me they were impressed. The game sync is pretty cool to use. cons would be there is noway to make FM presets without the remote. Also its heavy, and takes two to carry.

Sweet System for my Dorm
by flavelle ,Jan 20 '06
Pros: Loud sound, great price, great looks, plays MP3, Cons: It was darn heavy to carry back from the store.
Speakers are good sizes but I'd say the unit and sub are a tad large. Very nice elegant look to it, not like those others. Metallic blue-silver accents are sweet. Speaker wires are very short, 5 feet at most.

Excellent...For a while
by x_amad3us_x ,May 18 '05
Pros: Great power, great price, good looks Cons: Heavy, massive, MALFUNCTIONS
I purchased this system because it was very cheap and it was a brand that I thought had very good quality electronics, Sony. Took it home (not easy) it's very heavy and it's in a huge box, got it set up which was simple, and enjoyed the great amount of power that it had. I've had it now for about 2 months and it stopped reading cd's. I tried brand new cd's, old cd's, cd-rw's, cd-r's, and mp3 discs...none worked. I have decided that I'm not even going to get this one fixed as I have with my other 2 cd players that had the same symptoms, although they were both Aiwa systems.

GARBAGE
by dvndane ,Mar 23 '05
Pros: No Pros in my opinion since SONY won't even back their product. Cons: Poor quality product both in manufacturing and sound. SONY wouldn't stand behind their product !
Purchased system for vacation home. Used less than 10 times and had malfunction where Disc drawer opens on own, even when power is on standby. Drawer won't close with the button. Contacted SONY and they wouldn't stand behind their product. Sound was like you were in a cave. Tiny speaker wire than wasn't repairable if one should break.

I guess I was lucky
by spyinthecab ,Oct 13 '05
Pros: nice sound, good price, good features. Cons: Anything that breaks over just a year of immaculate care should never be bought again.
I actually got it to work for just over a year.
Was nice while it lasted..
Stopped reading cd's today.
I will never buy from Sony again.

by sqbubble ,May 18 '06
Pros: Not expensive, Very nice output, Very nice mid-bass, mid-range, nice highs Cons: could use more deeper bass and could use a better tweeter....
DAMN, MALFUNCTION???!!??
I have mine, since summer 2004, till now, it works like it did the first day, very BIG output for a room, and beleive me, I crank it like a stupid mofo, play CDs in it, CASeetee, and have it plugged with my computer right now, Ran some extreme woofer test with it, low low bass(it cant really take bass note below 45-50hz for ur info, 55hz and up, its loud enough) it could use more bass, BUT HEY, its freakin 200$ for a whole system i have it for 2YEARS, NO MALLFUNCTION crap.... and for sure itll keep me a good couple of years more!

Totally dissapointed
by vaccac ,Oct 16 '05
Pros: Woofer and speakers still work. At least for the moment....
Cons: Garbage
Having the same problem as the other reviewers. The unit just went bezerk yesterday after less than a year of use. It won't play CDs anymore. Display panel shows weird characters.
At least this piece of junk taught me a good lesson. NEVER buy again a piece of equipment just by trusting a brand name. ALWAYS read product reviews first.

Huge and crappy!!!!!
by ferrari348gts ,Jul 09 '05
Pros: Great sound and great look Cons: little bass, malfunctions, heavy
Once I got this 70+ pound system down to my basement room and got it all set up (1 hour) it kept turning off. I had to take it all the way upstairs and to the truck, and take it back to Sears! When it did work it was awesome!, but it only worked for 10min at a time at most. GO GET A SHARP brand system.

JUST GREAT!!
by diegogiudici ,Jul 03 '08
Pros: Great sound, more than enough power, really nice design, awesome bass, it plays mp3's. Cons: I'd like it more if it had a graphic equalizer.
I've had it for almost 4 years now, it's been working as the first day. I'd say I use almost every option it provides, CD player, cassette, AUX mode with my PC and I have even plugged my keyboard Roland and my acoustic Ovation. I've read others customers reviews and they are not happy with the bass it provides. I actually don't use the sub-woofer since it's to loud and it's not because I can't stand loud volume, I'm a musician so you know what I mean. I'd say sometimes I have to attenuate basses to -2, so you figure. May be it's a little heavy but hey, you are not holding the system every time you use it, right?? Other than carrying it when you buy it or when you move you don't have to deal with its weight. I've moved 3 times since I have it and it has kept working greatly. I'm happy with it and I definitely recommend it.

Good system for a good price
by pbmaster357 ,Dec 31 '05
Pros: Price, great sound, good bass, easy to use Cons: Big and heavy, sub is kind of weak for its size
I had been comparing the the Sony MHC-GX450 and the Panasonic SC-AK630K, and I finally decided on the Sony for a few reasons. First off, the price on the Sony was a little lower, and after trying to get the Panasonic systems on display at several local stores to work properly for testing, I decided to go with the Sony. I don't know what was wrong with the display systems, but even after I plugged the sub in it still wouldn't work, so I didn't know how good it was. I'm glad i chose the Sony, it hasn't disapointed me...yet.

screw u
by gabba ,Oct 10 '05
Pros: no pros Cons: bad woofers, only 3 cds
i bought this system just a couple of months ago and it alredy got a mojr problem of woofer felling apart. fyckin guy at the store told me it could handle up to 240 bmp but in the reality it cant even handle 200. and now even on a lower bass it still gives me this awful sound of the speaker rippin off.
If i ever find the retard who made it ill rip his fyckin hands off and put'em deep down his oss so he would know how to make a product that crappy.
