This unit looks good on paper, worked great at first, and appeared to live up to the SONY high quality standards. Ease of timer programming, well designed remote, fine quality audio and video in SLP mode were spot on at first. Within 4 months, the ...

In this updated review I'll be covering SONY SLV-N500, Hi-Fi VCR for 2003. I personally use Sony SLV-N500 daily which is a work horse in EP also known 8 hour mode. Most of all my recording is done under EP the clarity is so good why bother to use SP 2 ...

Critically flawed
by WRC123 ,Sep 14 '03
Pros: Good video, features, etc... Cons: Remote fails to work- has to be cosntantly reprogrammed!
The SLV-N500 looked like a great product when I purchaced it at Circuit City. High-speed rewind, easily programable timers for later recording, commerical skip, and automatic head-cleaning attracted me to it.
However, there was one critical flaw- the remote continually "forgot" the model of my TV. Every 10 or so minutes I would have to re-enter the model number of my TV. Switch from "VCR" to "TV," hold "POWER" and enter 8 then release power. The unit would not remember this for more then 15 minutes! This VCR is totally useless for controlling a TV. If you don't mind using two remotes, that's great. But if you want to use Sony's remote, be prepared for trouble.
I find this flaw so irritating that I will, most likely, be returning the unit today.
