Pros: Small, good picture, well built, Cons: Tinny sound (like them all), expensive, no auto/air adapter.
Our toddler (2 ½ years) has begun to watch a lot of movies (Finding Nemo, Bugs life, Milo & Otis, etc.) and I have been buying all of them on DVD because I hate the poor picture and lifespan of VHS. At home things work great and he has actually figured ...

NICE PICTURE - WHEN IT WORKS - BAD SERVICE
by tsjgolden ,Jan 16 '07
Pros: Nice looking player - good picture Cons: Short lifespan, Bad customer service, expensive
The player worked great and looks impressive for about 1.5 years. Then "dvd error" and it will not read any dvd. I wrote to Sony customer service and they had the nerve to say that I needed to put my dvd in right side up. I wrote them back and they sent some lame FAQ link that repeated the insult about putting the dvd in right side up or trying a different dvd after I wrote to them telling them that I tried all of my dvds. They also offered to exchange the player for $381.00 plus shipping. I will never buy another Sony product and I would encourage anyone that asks to avoid their products.

It Will Break
by nootmike ,Apr 20 '05
Pros: It worked for one year Cons: For the price, it lacks a million things. When it breaks, you're screwed.
I've owned mine for exactly one year, and like clock-work, the player broke on it's anniversary - right when the warranty expired. A simple problem: The DC 9V input stopped working, which results in the inability to charge the battery, use the wall outlet adapter, or any other adapter. No power = no DVD player. Sony is a joke. They're solution. $392 for a refurbished piece of junk, or after asking repeatedly, send it in for repairs w/ a check for $133, and hope they send it back fixed. Unbelievable. I'll just go buy a $149 polaroid player from Wal-Mart or something. Oh yah, don't even think about splitting the weak headphone signal (only 1 jack) - On a plane, you'll just end up looking at your wife muttering, "What did he say?"

Worked Great for 1.5 Years
by menomonee ,Oct 27 '05
Pros: Excellent picture quality, great sound for the back seat of a car Cons: Short lifetime (died after 1.5 years)
I received this DVD player as a gift. It worked great for about 1.5 years. Since I refused to pay $100 for a car adapter from Sony, I used a $15 power inverter (plug the inverter into your lighter outlet, and plug the Sony power supply into the inverter). My two boys watched many DVDs in the back seat of the car during long trips.
Then one day it wouldn't turn on anymore. The green light on the power supply comes on, and I can charge the battery, but the DVD player won't power on. Since the warranty was only 1 year, this is another piece of Sony junk that will end up in the trash.

Strongly recommend against it.
by jboucher_candw ,Feb 17 '04
Pros: Looks nice. Not much else to say. Cons: Major shortcomings. See body
1) it does not have, nor does Sony offer a compatible 12V power adaptor. So, you HAVE to rely solely on the battery. If you want to watch more than 3hrs between charges you are out of luck.
2) you CANNOT charge while watching a DVD. Bizarre. If you have a layover, you cannot charge while watching a movie.
3) you cannot connect/disconnect the power while watching a DVD
4) you cannot skip or fast-forward over commercials at the start of a DVD without the remote, even though the DVD itself says you can.
5) it does not remember where you were when you powered down or lost power.
Together these shortcomings are a nightmare. You must sit through all those commercials every time you power up, and that occurs every time you connect/disconnect from a power supply.

Never buy from Sony
by haggquist ,Jul 09 '04
Pros: Sony Name - not a pro anymore Cons: Poor customer support and warranty service.
We purchased our Sony DVP-FX700 from SoundTrack with an Extra Warranty. After 40 days and only using the player a few times the player started to have erratic playing. At times the player would freeze up and refusing to play DVDs. We contacted SoundTrack and they said the Sony Warranty still applied and we needed to contact them. When we contacted them we found out the unit was discontinued because of problems. We ask to have our unit replaced. They agreed to replace the unit with a refurbished unit and we have to pay for shipping. I have only owned the unit for less than 40 days and now I have to get a used unit instead coupled with paying for shipment. I am very unhappy with having a unit which lasted such a short amount of time and how Sony is handling the situation.

Product worth the Money
by dcole001 ,Apr 21 '04
Pros: quality, plus price for feature Cons: pricey, compared to Low end off brands?
I have owned several Portable DVD Players and this One is by far the best quality. Also Feature for Price is good as well. If you are looking for Quality and are willing to pay a few bucks more you can get sony which has lasted twice as long as the other brands I purchased before.

Beware of the SONY rip off.
by picklcat ,Jul 17 '04
Pros: zero Cons: No 12 Volt adapter and to buy one is $99.
This DVD player has no plug in for 12 volt car and RV outlets. Sony creates odd voltage inputs so that you must by their outlet plug for $99 instead of buying a generic one for $15. This unit uses 9.8 volts.
I am so off of SONY. This is a rip off if you plan on using this unit outside of your house. I will stay away from all SONY products after being ripped off on this one. This is truly a dirty marketing ploy.

Great for a few months, then major problems.
by awimpelberg ,Jul 12 '04
Pros: Sony backed up their product. Cons: Short battery life (3hours). Product quit working after 4 months.
I have owned this DVD player for about six months. It worked well for a brief period. After a few months, the DVDs started "skipping" while playing. Now, six months later, it won't read any disk you put into it. There is not a car adapter and the battery life is only about 3 hours. I emailed Sony and the car adapter that they make for it cost $200.oo and is only available on their website. I have taken it to Radio Shack and they don't have an adapter that is compatible with the voltage.
Update 8/2/04. I sent this player back to Sony for a repair. They sent me a new FX701, which includes a car adapter.
