Bose 301B Main / Stereo Speaker

Pros: Good bass extension from a bookshelf Looks cool
Cons: No air No sparkle Muddy midrange

I recently was at ultimate electronics to audition a bookshelf speaker in the 300 dollar range. I ultimately went out the door with a pair of Kef Qcompacts. However i always knew about bose and i wanted to see if their bookshelves are any improvement ...

Pros: Clear midrange.
Cons: Overpriced. Poor performance on highs and lows.

Like all Bose speakers the 301s are best when handling midrange. Bose knows that most people are not discerning listeners. They want clear sound in the midrange. Bose certainly delivers although not as crisp as I'd like. They have serious problems delivering the high and low ends. These speakers are fine for radio talk show but that's about it. Finally, they are (like all Bose products) considerably overpriced.
There are a lot of good bookshelf speakers with better performance and a lower price. Why pay for the name?
