Pros: Affordable, good spec, great sound, low end excursion, good for beginners. Cons: Not many, not brilliant with music.
Your out to buy a bit of low end thrust for your already (cheap) low cost home cinema. But are there any cheap subs, which work as well as more expensive ones?
I have always loved Yamaha, not only for their bikes, but for there excellent...

Outstanding Value

Pros: Inexpensive and sounds fantastic. Cons: Rumble fanatics will want more power (and distortion) than this.
We're using the ARS108PS with a "cobbled together" 6 speaker system consisting of two Bose bookshelf speakers for right and left front, an Sony center and rear channel speakers. We also use it with the Bose bookshelf speakers and two Sony 3-way floor standing speakers. The receiver is a Sony putting out 85 per channel. I play in a rock band and I'm real picky about about bass...the bass here is very tight - never flabby even for overmixed movie soundtracks. Given the speakers I'm using I expected I might need to buttress/baby this sub, given that its only an 8 inch speaker running at - I think - 80 watts. Not at all. I find myself backing it DOWN 2 clicks for music and back up two for film soundtracks. I hear no distortion at all - which is what drives me nuts with the other subs I've auditioned. I'd recommend this sub to anyone looking for a good musical subwoofer wanting to pay less than $1000 (for a sufficiently-powered sub to really drive a big speaker). The 12's and 15's I've auditioned sound awful in comparison.

Cons & Pros!
by yguelce ,Aug 05 '04
Pros: Great products Cons: Customer service sucks.
Overall, Acoustic Research products are greatly manufactured, but their customer service sucks big time. You better hope the product last for ever without having to call for services on it ever. They recently have been brought out by Thompson Corp. Several months back I send in a product for repair and they lost the item and Im still fighting with them to refund me my money. Whats worse this is that, someone signed for the item at their product exchange center site and they are still trying to deny it.
Good Luck!
