Pros: Pause live tv, record numerous programs, and more importantly prevent fighting over the television Cons: expensive, month charge (12/month)
While spending a few hundred dollars to invest in a Tivo player isn't on the top of everyones list of things to do, it does save a ton of time, effort, and aggravation if your looking tape things on television a lot. If your like me, then you have a busy ...

Pros: Control what and when you watch TV. VERY easy to use. Cons: Service is expensive but not outrageous compared to my local cable provider.
Because of my job, I travel quite a bit. I am sick of paying for cable TV and always missing my favorite TV shows so I decided to invest in TIVO. I did my research on the internet and decided to stick with the named brand (TIVO). I couldn't make my ...

You'll wonder how you lived without it!
by krmmogrt ,Mar 07 '05
Pros: Very smart software, EASY to use, YOU own it (not cable company). Cons: Curious future with cable DVR competition. Pricey without rebates.
We've had TIVO (140 hour) for 5 months and love it. So much so we may get another (40 hour) for the upstairs TV. Subscripton service (12.95/month and 6.95 for multiples) is well worth it. Cable bill is expensive for us and had very little value...until TIVO came along! Extremely easy to use, a terrific "filtering" for searching the TV guide, and the ability to create actor/director/title wishlists is awesome.
"Season's Pass" feature to grab you favorite shows is not
possible with cable DVRs. Tivo invented the device, and is clearly the best at it. Some cable companies rent DVRs with "no expensive equipment to buy"...yeah, but can you take it on vacation with you? Tivo is yours, and you can use it as a storage device for music and photos (though we haven't done this yet). The ususal DVR features of pause, fast forward
over commercials,is great. But our most favorite: 8 second replay for "What did he say??". One button and you're seeing it again!! Can't stand watching TV without it, and finally our cable bill has something worthwhile to see, when we want see it.

TiVo: A Must buy for television lovers
by jdf14 ,Jul 08 '07
Pros: Awesome to have, easy to use Cons: Can't really ff commercials, only on recorded programs. Slow remote reactions. ANNOYING SOUNDS!
I recieved this as a gift for my b-day last june. It has been a true lifesaver. I am able to record my favorite show "Motorweek" every week. The season pass manager is a nice feature to have, it allows you to record a weekly showing automatically. On the downside, the machine is slow to respond when you hit buttons on the remote, and the noises it makes when you use the remote are annoying. All in all, a great device to have for tv lovers! Like me lol :)

Best invention ever!
by SRichey ,Feb 13 '05
Pros: The best thing obviously is being able to watch tv on YOUR schedule. Cons: You may end up watching much more TV!
We got our TiVo through DirecTV. It was advertised at 99.00, but I ended up getting it for about half because of a mix-up with ordering.
Anyway, TiVo is the BEST invention EVER! The options that it offers are fantastic; you can look for tv shows that you want to see by searching for an actor, date, or channel. You can make a "favorites" list, program stations for your children, record pay-per-view movies, and SO MUCH MORE!
The only drawback is that I was becoming a bit more of a couch potato but then I went out and bought a Reebok Elliptical Trainer and put it right in front of my tv!

Not As Good As The Ultimate TV System by Microsoft
by ckillingsworth ,Jul 20 '05
Pros: You can watch TV on your own time and not miss a show. Cons: It will only show 11 days of scheduled programing. Not 2 months out. No Webtv.
I'm sad they don't have them anymore. My Ultimate TV system started having problems after having it only 2 years but the unit all in all was awesome when it worked. It was replaced by a Phillips Tivo. I could do so many more things with Ult. TV. Recording time was longer, you could use the webmail to check emails and send them. You could record 2 and watch something else on the third channel. It would put all the same show type in one category so you knew if you had 5 to watch they were there in a line. When programing you could go to the date on a calendar an highlight it to bring up the shows. Tivo you have to scan through every hour and day. Not sure I'd purchase this particular unit. I'll wait till it does more. This was a replacement for my other Ultimate unit. I was spoiled by the unit I had.

Be Ready to Purchase a New One.
by wubba1108 ,Jan 28 '06
Pros: Convenience Cons: The device doesn't last more than a year.
Is it convenient? Sure. Is it great to fast forward through commercials? Sure.
Will it last you a year? Possibly not.
We purchase our Tivo exactly one year ago and the thing DIED this morning. It now officially has the distinction of being the ONLY electronic piece of equipment to NOT make it more than a year in our home.
So, if the convenience and philosophy behind it matter more than having to replace the darn thing every year, have at it.

TIVO Rocks!!
by butterflyjkg ,Aug 06 '06
Pros: It reinvents boring old TV!!!It's amazing. Cons: The price-if you miss a sale
I have had my TIVO for about 6 months now and I truly believe I would perish without it. :) I can't stand watching regular tv! Watching commercials now is like fingernails down a black board!!! Every time we watch a show and a commercial comes on we all yell "Boop! Boop! Boop!!!!" to the person holding the remote. That is the sound TIVO makes when fast forwarding through commercials. You can set it for kids settings now, too, which is nice for them to have their own section. I got mine for around $80 at Best Buy when they had a $150 rebate deal going or I wouldn't have spent that kind of money on something I didn't know about. If you can afford it, you will love it and never wait around or miss another show. You can TIVO your favorite shows and record them to keep if you want. If you have broadband you can just hook it up to that and it will constantly update. I still plug mine into a dial up to update and I sometimes forget to do it.

poor cust serv
by stillsm ,Apr 29 '05
Pros: good technology Cons: poor cust serv
The idea of tivo is wonderful. I had a similiar DVR with Dish network. ( it is far superior to tivo) I decide to go with cable due to work paying for cable internet and wanted to get tivo. imediately I started having the picture freeze on the screen. I thought being a new technology they would have a way to send a email to get some cust support. I checked and per their website they no longer do cust support thru their site. so the only option is to call and wait for phone support. they also care nothing about the DVR unit.
The reason being is they mak no money on the unit. They only make money on the service. while that is fine. who wants service if the unit will not work correctly.
