Toshiba SD-P1200 Portable DVD Player with Screen

by kelly60 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Feb 29 '04
Pros: Decent picture, easy to use, good battery life, hours of enjoyment.
Cons: Sometimes have to play with the plug to get it to charge.
I got the Toshiba SD-P1200 Portable DVD Player with Screen as a gift and although I have only been using it for a couple of months, I have had no problems with it so far. I like that this unit is easily portable. It measures about 1 1/4 ...

Another Great Product from Toshiba "A+"

by firesgar , Jan 24 '04
Pros: Affordable price, nice picture, easy to operate, good battery life
Cons: Sound quality is a bit questionable
Recently I have been doing a lot of cross country traveling and I was getting sick of seeing the same movies shown over and over again by the airlines. I had anticipated on being able to play DVDs on my Inspiron laptop but it became obvious very quickly ...

JUNK!!!!!!!!!!

by chrissycmi , Nov 04 '04
Pros: Nice looking, nice picture when it works.
Cons: Does not hold a charge, JUNK!!!! Garbage!!!!! Not worth the money!!!!
I bought this product as a gift in May of 2003. The player was used about 3 times and after about eight months the DVD player would not hold a charge. I contacted Toshiba and was told they would repair the product but I need to send the DVD player to ...

Mixed opinion about this player

by tankdaddy , Nov 14 '04
Pros: Great picture, 2 headphone jacks, sealed buttons, good cable connectivity options
Cons: Audio CD playback problems, bad battery at purchase, remote control might break
I bought this DVD player from the PX in Baghdad, Iraq as they were carrying it at an attractive price ($399). I read in the instructions to charge the battery before using the player with the battery, so I did. I came back about 4 hours later only to ...

Very Disappointed, But There May be Hope

by zderf , Oct 02 '03
Pros: Rugged look and feel, good battery life, good display on replacement unit.
Cons: Poor quality on 1st unit. Confusing Toshiba Customer Service.
Bought this unit for the Toshiba name, and the rugged physical appearance. Its not rugged, however. As a gift presented in June 2003, right out of the box the DVD player’s screen would flicker and become grainy when the buttons on the console were ...

Unreliable
by victorl25 ,Jan 29 '04
Pros: looks, battery life
Cons: reliability
I read reviews here before writing my (unfortunately too late for me) and I see a pattern. I bought this unit because it looked rugged, had decent screen size and long battery life. The latter was true while I could charge the battery, but after 3 months it stopped charging. It also developed a problem with the screen going off by itself. Overall I had it for less than 6 months and never abused it. While it was working, the picture/sound quality was OK, but it was sensitive to bumps and was picky to the disc quality.

The picture is not sharp, and the sound is poor. The battery lost its ability to charge after one week of use.

Bad choice
by jccernuto ,May 03 '04
Pros: Cushioned, good feel.
Cons: Not reliable, does not consistently read disk.
I bought the SD-P1200 at Best Buy and right from the start it had difficulty reading disk. I took it back and they gave me a new one and it did the same thing... it would display "no disk" when it had one and "open" when closed and visa versa. I brought the second one back to Best Buy and explained that this was obviously a defective product (their Toshiba floor model was doing the same thing!)and I upgraded to the Sony which I am very happy with.

Defective DVD From Factory, Don't Buy!
by glenn-w ,Dec 07 '03
Pros: It didn't catch fire. Cute red rubberish case.
Cons: Zero reliability, zero support until Toshiba was overrun with complaints. For $500, I feel raped.
This is the worst quality DVD portable I've ever seen. Unplug the power supply and the brightness goes to < one half, no way to override. Frequently refuses to charge battery. Frequently refuses to play whole disk. Laser sled sticks after playing some long DVDs. What a piece of crap.

Toshiba denied all of the above as did the slimeball dealer (Video Only) for months. Now Toshiba is recalling the player, the dealer stapped selling the whole line and I heard Best Buy blew-out thousands of them for $299, knowing that they'd fail. Toshiba finally apologized and said send in the old carcas and they'd replace it.

Maybe the replacement will at least work for a while. I'm very disappointed and will never buy Toshiba or from Video Only again. If you have one, demand a replacement.

Delightful Travel Companion
by susannah111 ,Oct 17 '03
Pros: It's light and sturdy, and battery life was 5 hours.
Cons: At 3 lbs. it's still weighty, and the sound could be better.
I took this unit to London and loved having it. It kept me company in a hotel that was too cheap to pay for premium channels. I only wish this unit were less expensive. List is $599, and I saw a refurbished one go on eBay for $325. Am hoping that prices come down after the holidays.

My first and last Toshiba product
by michellesmith ,Apr 21 '04
Pros: It looks pretty and when it does work, it has good sound quality and picture.
Cons: Don't waste your money.
I am pretty sure this is the first Toshiba product I have purchased, but I am certain it will be the last. My husband and I purchased it in May 2003. We are on our second battery, with the same problem. After a short period of time, the battery no longer accepts a charge, which makes it quite useless. We have probably used it less than 15 times. So we contacted Toshiba after we read all of the terrible reviews now coming out on it...at the time we bought it, it was new on the market, so there were no published opinions. Per Toshiba's direction, we took it in to the factory service center to have it "diagnosed," which costs 40.00. There is no way we will ever buy another Toshiba product.

Disappointed so far...
by lextnc ,Oct 26 '03
Pros: Looks rugged, Dual headphone jacks
Cons: poorly manufactured, poor internal speakers, very dark video with no way to adjust.
I Purchased Mine 3 Months ago, I'm on my 3rd unit.
I Have experianced the same type of faliure on both previous units.

While watching a dvd, the playback will inexplicably stop, the unit will flash the open screen, then the loading screen, then start playng the disk from the beginning.

I Travel frequently and love to have personal entertainment with me. I Had High expectations for this unit because it looks rugged. I Have never dropped or abused the unit(s). If Number 3 develops the same type of failure. I will have to move on to a differant manufacturer..

An awful, awful choice
by daden ,Oct 05 '03
Pros: Cool looking case
Cons: A terribly unreliable product with poor picture and sound
I bought this thing brand new. It was meant to replace my 2 year old Panasonic. The Toshiba had never been dropped, hit or abused, yet after just 3 months, it stopped working. The battery would not accept a charge, the screen would not display. I had used it only 5 times, each time for less than 15 minutes. My old Panasonic was durable and reliable. Even when the Toshiba worked, its picture and sound quality were inferior to the Panasonic's. Also, the controls on the unit and remote were not as well designed as the Panasonic's. I wish I never sold my old player. The Toshiba is awful.

Do Not Buy!
by kittydog ,Nov 05 '04
Pros: good picture
Cons: Design problem with battery! flimsy cover causes unit to reset sometimes.
I purchased this product 18 months ago and have been generally happy with the performance. That was until the battery died. It will not hold a charge at all. I emailed the customer service center who told me I would have to call the customer service number. When I called and asked about the numerous battery failures I have read about in other reviews, they denied there was a product defect and referred me to a service/parts center in Miami. They informed me that the battery is discontinued. A portable DVD player without a battery is not much use.
