Pros: A lot of features for the price! Tests great so far. Cons: Some minor design gripes, but no big deal.
I just got my Toshiba SD-V391 DVD player/VCR combo a few days ago and it's performed well so far. I chose this model because of the features, price, and Toshiba name. DVD playback is good. Navigation is pretty simple, with the same controls (search, ...

Toshiba SD-V391 is a piece of junk
by lslane ,Oct 16 '07
Pros: The clock seemed to keep pretty good time Cons: Unreliable and just plain awful. Never again!!
I have owned several VCR/DVD players and this is the worst unit I have ever had. The DVD side is far worse than an average unit and the VCR side stopped working after about 6 or 7 tapes. It still has a tape in it and I cannot get it to eject the tape. NO MORE TOSHIBA GARBAGE IN MY HOUSE!!!

Toshiba SD-V391 DVD VHS a bad choice for reliability
by microben ,Apr 29 '05
Pros: Low price.
Cons: Bad reliability, bad servicing.
I bought a SD-V391 one year ago. I always had problems with this combo. One day I can listen one full DVD without any problems, but the next one it is impossible to listen the same DVD. Frequently the SD-V391 stop the reading and freezes the image indefinitely. I asked to my dealer the reason of this malfunction and he always answer me that the problem didn't come from the DVD player but by the DVD movie. So I tried to play all my "bad DVD's" on an other player and I never had any problems. Last week I met one of my friend and he confirmed me that he had the same problems with his SD-V391 that he bought last year. He brought back the player to the electronic store and he asked for a repair under warranty. The SD-V391 came back home with the same troubles and my friend confirms me that his son in law never get satisfied with his own SD-V391.

No Big Complaints
by amerie478ny ,Nov 09 '05
Pros: Use of a decent DVD player without having to throw out those VHS tapes. Cons: Won't play poor quality DVD's.
I've had this unit for almost 2 years and have had no real problems with it. It plays my CD's and DVD's just fine. It is fickle about playing copied or low quality DVD's, but don't they all. If you're trying to play a scratched or burned DVD, you will probably have a problem.

Decent machine
by stdh ,Jan 19 '04
Pros: Good name brand, decent performance, great price Cons: it's occasionally overly sensitive to dirty discs.
Not bad for a dual combo machine at this price range - I paid $120 at PC Richards. Offers a good brand name, fairly easy instruction, and decent picture quality. It does have one problem though, it fails to read discs that are slightly dusty. It reads after I give the disc good cleaning but I seem to encounter fewer reading problems with another DVD player I own - JVC XVFA95. But at the price I paid for multi-functioning machine, I really can't complain.

Piece of trash
by maggot00 ,Oct 30 '05
Pros: mediocre VCR Cons: cheap, terrible DVD player
I got this thing from Best Buy, played maybe 5 DVDs on it, it sputtered half the time, couldn't play DVDs. Now the DVD drawer is stuck shut.. I would not recommend buying this.

Good basic DVD/VHS
by camp9 ,Nov 29 '03
Pros: Price, size Cons: Remote, on screen interface
Not the best unit, but certainly not bad. The overall build quality and finish are OK. The DVD drawer is a bit cheap and off center, but does not appear to affect functionality. The remote is very poor and the on screen UI is terrible. If you buy this unit get a good after market universal remote.

Not a good choice
by opera_man ,Jun 17 '04
Pros: Cheap and nice to have 2 capabilities of VHS and DVD in one unit. Cons: DVD playback is not poor and likely has a design flaw.
I purchased my unit from Best Buy and opted out of the add-on service warranty. Big mistake. My DVD play started sputtering and freezing and when I took it into Best Buy they said sorry you didn't pay for the xtra warranty so off to Toshiba (Canada) it must go. After about a month of tinkering with it they decided to give me a new one. Now the new one is doing exact the same thing as the first. I suppose I will be looking at getting machine number 3 - but I just about ready to bin it and eat the $249 myself.
