Pros: This camera is small enough to LOSE easily. Cons: No Vivitar support or drivers: no further comment required.
Failure alone was not enough to stop Vivitar from selling this horrid contraption. I originally bought the camera because of the Vivitar name, but I won't be making that mistake again. This camera makes me wonder what they were even thinking. The ...

I'm returning it now
by melilem ,Nov 12 '06
Pros: I can return it for store credit Cons: I bought it in the first place
The camera was fickle, it wouldn't let me take pictures half the time. Most pictures I took by accident (yes I know how to use a camera :P). The software is just confusing and unnecessary. I downloaded and installed a driver online (setupv55E.exe), it didn't help. Finally I found the program to view it with in the jungle of software that came with this thing (forgot the name, it's dvplayer or something). The pictures were all blurry and double-vision like. Every picture taken with flash was white from brightness, even those I took outside. Im taking it back to Walmart, even though I only payed $20 for it, I will be damned if Im going to eat this thing.

Good Camera!
by old_turtle ,Oct 19 '06
Pros: Small, easy, built-in flash Cons: None, at the price.
Despite the poor reviews I found here, I decided to take the plunge and buy one. (20usd).
I find the pictures to be satisfactory for a $20 camera. What I liked, among other things, is that unlike other low-cost cameras it has a flash.
The software works fine on a P3/200mhz Win-98 system, and a
P3/800mhz system.
White balance is not good, and the pictures can be grainy, but what would one expect at the resolution of this camera?
It works fine for my use, which is to keep a camera in the car for occasional quick shots.
Good job, Vivitar!

Not Bad For The Low Price!
by margeinreno ,Feb 21 '07
Pros: Features I've tried have been well worth the small amount paid for it. Cons: I do have problems seeing some of the MODE symbols in that itty-bitty window!
I think it's an okay camera to have along with you 'just in case'. The main reason I bought it was my Cell Phone's camera doesn't have a flash, only that night mode (NOKIA) and there have been numerous times I wished I had a cheap little flash camera (digital) on hand.
I've read the reviews about the super-white flash on it. I put a piece of Scotch Brand tape (the frosty looking stuff) over it. I don't get that HUGE white flash anymore.
NO problems with getting the software loaded or downloading from the camera to the computer. It takes great little pictures and since I have PhotoShop, I can do some editing on that graininess it seems to have every once in awhile. Not every pic, just sometimes. Ah well, whaddaya expect from an $18.88 bargain at Wal-Mart?

Is a toy
by rmata ,Feb 02 '04
Pros: cheap and great for your kids Cons: Is a good toy, but, not a good camera
Is cheap, small and easy to use and carried, my kids love this camera (they have 4 and 6 years old).
Poor quality, complicated images download (bad driver, you must download one by one), built-in memory don't like me, you can't upload any information (well, it's not a problem because this camera have 8MB only).
try for your tiny kids

Not for Mac users
by wep94 ,Jun 11 '07
Pros: cheap and small Cons: unusable for Mac users.
My daughter received one of these as a gift. She was all excited and ran around shooting pictures. Then we found that the included software only works on Windows and Mac OS X didn't recognize the device at all (tried in Image Capture). Nothing showed up on the desktop. No way to get her pictures off.

Good Buy
by lilz247 ,Apr 20 '08
Pros: Good pics, long battery life on rechargeables, nice design/colors, bright flash Cons: No Screen, but what do you expect at 18.88usd
I bought the cam for 18.88usd, and it works perfectly. I have taken about 600 pics with it, and none have been bad. I would recommend this cam to anybody who wants a quick, cheap easy to use camera, as it works very well! If you want proof, then check out my myspace page, myspace.com/aitnava. the majority of the pics on there are taken with this camera. The drivers were easy to install, they took about 2 minutes. The software is easy to use.

The camera works fine
by oaprock ,Dec 04 '06
Pros: Easy to use Cons: Only 8 megs of memory
This camera works great for the price. The people having problems need to learn how to use a computer and camera. The software included is very simple to use and it's easy to load the pics onto the pc.

Vivicam 55 for mac solution
by dalix ,Sep 09 '07
Pros: good for the kids, practical, Cons: i consider this camera just for fun and kids
i found this solution for a Macintosh users working in osx 10.4 :
Since Vivitar does not make drives for the Vivicam 55, and only made the 55B OS X compatible
I had to go do some digging to get it to work.
From Google groups I ended up in digital-products.info and grabbed 905C OSX10.4.zip. Inside are a PKG file, and a Quicktime component,
Copy the Quicktime component to /Library/QuickTime/, then install the PKG. Reboot. grumble.
Open Image capture or iPhoto.. and it works!
Thanks to
dAVE

Vivitar vivicam 55
by weeblespin ,May 23 '07
Pros: Well, the blue and silver design is cute... Cons: Good lord, see the review!!!
It was cheap, and i wanted a digital camera to 'play' with. It takes decent pictures, but freezes up my computer every time i use it on cam mode. So i took a few photos, using the electronic AAA batteries which never last very long - one day trip to the mountains and the batteries, at over 10 bucks a set, are dead. So i guess you get what you pay for. cheap up front, costly down the road. and it doesn't live up to the promise. I'm still messing with it foolishly - have to face up to it and buy a useable camera. It will NOT be a vivitar - of the four vivitar products i have used NONE were quality items. What's the matter with those people anyways... ?

Cheap!
by hepi ,Jan 04 '04
Pros: Cheap, small Cons: poor picture quality, no Linux support
Just bought this camera for $19.90 (USD).
That's just the right price for it's picture quality.
Nice toy for my 4 yr old daughter ;-)
No problems installing the driver on Windows ME.
On the box it has the "USB Mass Storage Device" logo,
which it is definately NOT! And no Linux drivers
available (AFAIK).

"Driver Open Fail" Mesages!
by braulio_ ,Jul 10 '04
Pros: "Driver Open Fail" messages do not allow me to include a positive comment. Cons: "Driver Open Fail" messages prevent seeing the photos!
After repeated tries, I can't get the driver to open. I've tried on both Win 98 and XP, so what's the use if you can't open the photos? The "latest" driver download from the Vivitar site didn't work either. Vivitar should hang their heads in shame for not getting a driver posted on their website that will work.

this camera is worthless
by ryanrandolph ,Aug 09 '06
Pros: None Cons: Complete waste. The moments you thought you captured forever lost to another cheap rip-off.
After buying this camera for ~$25 I truly regret my purchase. I did not expect much more than to at least be able to capture some grainy images and be able to send them home to my family by email. I figured low resolution would be good for easy downloading. However, since I can't get a damn driver that works, I have no pictures at all to send home. This POS is going back to Wally World for a full refund ASAP!!!
