Ryanair - a cut too far?

by cr01 cr01 is a Lead on Epinions in Hotels & Travel, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Sep 09 '04
Pros: Cheap if you book early enough. They go to some wild and wacky airports
Cons: Silly luggage restrictions. Indifferent staff.
Living in the north of England, I seemed to have largely missed the flying phenomenon known as Ryanair. Although Ryanair fly from some northern airports, the destination is often Dublin only. Many of its UK flights leave from Stansted, an airport ...

RYANAIR - No frills, but it got me there

by chelledun chelledun is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Hotels & Travel, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Jul 11 '05
Pros: Accommodating in a stressful time, second plane was very comfortable, cheap
Cons: Distant airports, non-reclining seats on one flight, must pay for food/drink
I didn’t have particularly high expectations when I booked my flight on RyanAir. My flight was from London Stansted to Venice Treviso and for 100 pounds a person I basically was expecting a cattle car which would dump me off far from my ...

Ryanair...might get you there

by lyagushka Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, Mar 06 '03
Pros: Extremely cheap prices for intra-European flights.
Cons: There are obvious reasons why the fares are so low.
Late last year, my husband and I heard that RyanAir was giving away tickets for flights within Europe. The special offer was available for three days in mid-November for travel through mid-February. "What the heck," we thought. "Free travel! ...

Pros: cheap, lots of destinations
Cons: really high charges to change flights, uses small airports

The airline that started it all

by vicfar , Aug 22 '07
Pros: It gets you there on time
Cons: There...may not be close to where you really want to be
After the European airline industry was deregulated in 1997, a pioneer company promoting low-cost, no frills travel was Ryanair, an Irish airline that had actually been around since 1986. Now Ryanair is approaching 1 billion euros in sales per year and ...

RYANAIR the low fares airline

by proxam Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Nov 15 '01
Pros: Cheap

Pros: Cheap. Unbelievably Cheap if you look hard enough.
Cons: You get what you pay for....which isn't a lot!
Ryanair is an amazingly cheap airline. Frankly, I don't know how they do it, sometimes - and yet they're profitable, so they must be doing something right.

Pros: If you book way ahead of time, it can be cheap.
Cons: No service, wrong information, and nobody to talk to.

Not long ago, it used to be rather expensive to fly from Sweden to the rest of Europe. In resent years, competition has increased and the prices are now lower than ever. In 1998, RyanAir opened began flying between Sweden and London, charging 50% lower...

Best little find, but where?

by hbkduke , May 03 '00
Pros: quick, friendly service
Cons: not characteristic of a large airline, and all coach class
Taking Ryanair from France to Ireland is a treat for the pocket book. However, getting from Paris to Beauvais is definately a trek. There is a hard to find bus to get to the Beauvais airport, but I found it rather shady. Afterall, I did want to catch...

Ryan Air? Low fares, Low Service

by count , May 03 '00
Pros: Cost, frequency of flights
Cons: Always lengthy delays, in-flight juice/soda not included, old planes
Ryan Air say that they're cheap so you're expecting a small plane, a bit noisy, cramped etc. This is fine considering you're taking a one hour flight for under 100 Pounds. What *is* a problem though is in all the times that I travelled Ryan, they never...

Ryanair - Cheapest around if you can find the right price

by dangey2009New Member , Dec 05 '09
Pros: Cheap budget airline that are quite reliable
Cons: No frills and not always that comfortable and hidden costs
Ryanair are a no frills budget airline, claiming to be the cheapest airline around flying to Europe. Some people hate them and some people love them but you can't argue with the value for money they provide. As someone who uses Ryanair once a ...

Reasonable attitudes to Customers. Worst airline in Europe.
by ceciliay ,Oct 22 '06
Pros: The price is cheap but with hidden cost brings.
Cons: Poor service. Long delays. Obscure airports and VEry very rude attitudes to customers.
Ryanair is the Worst Airline in Europe 4th Year running. There are better budget airlines to travel extensively in Europe like Easyjet and even Go-fly and Bmi baby.

Maureen ( check-in supervisor) from Ryanair Checkin in Scotland said to me:

"I have given you all the information I decide you need to know. You can ask me questions but you won't get an answer. Ryanair is a private company that answers to no one and we are subject to no authorities. We make our own laws and the customers have to abide by it.There is no other avenue to complain because we don't have to listen to any civil aviation or other authorities. So I don't have to listen to your complaints! You can quote me anywhere you like.I get complaints like this all day."

With attitudes like that and only 20mins to overhaul a flight from landing to the next take-off, you can appreciate the fears many people have for their safety as well as the conditions and hygiene on the plane. It will cost you at least £15-£20 each way, just to get to and leave Ryanair's airports. Cheap is not good, if you get abused.

Great value and efficient
by remickd ,May 21 '04
Pros: Outstanding value.
Cons: Ryanair does not show upon standard airline pricing sites such as Orbitz, Expedia or Travelocity.
We recently flew Ryanair from London, England to Dublin Ireland. The cost of the ticket was 1 euro!! With taxes and fees the entire trip was closer to about 40 euros for myself and my wife. The plane left directly from Gatwick. Checkin was painless, or as pain free as airtravel can be in these times of increased security.

We also flew from Dublin to Edinburgh, and then from Glasgow to London. Each of the trip segments went smoothly. All of the planes left on time, the aircraft were new, spotless, and the flight crew friendly.

I fly over 40,000 miles a year for business in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Ryanair is as good or better in terms of service as any major airline. The only difference is that you will pay substantially less for your ticket.

If you are traveling in Europe, be sure to look at their website ryanair.com for truly outstanding deals.

Ryanair for value
by johnstark ,Jul 09 '04
Pros: Ease of booking; good cabin baggage allowance; good choice of food/drink onboard
Cons: No pre-selection of seats - I would be willing to pay extra for this.
I have now flown several times with this airline and have booked a number of further flights on the strength of that experience. I have found check-in staff to be invariably polite and helpful. The cabin crew are smartly dressed and efficient. The captain has kept us well informed on each flight, particularly if there is likely to be any delay, e.g. for de-icing at Charleroi on 22 December last. The cabin baggage allowance was generous and has now been increased to 10 kg. And on my most recent flight I was invited on to the flight deck at Prestwick by the First Officer. The legroom while not generous is adequate (and I am almost 1 m 80 in height).

A bad experience thanks to a terrible costumer service
by jplosada ,Nov 13 '06
Pros: Relatively cheap flights
Cons: Bad service, poorly trained personnel.
We just have a bad experience with Ryanair at Girona Airport (Spain).
Our flight was cancelled without prior notice. Ryanair ground personnel were rude and of little help. None of them provided any explanation for the cancellation. When we ask for a printed document of our ticket reimbursement, we were told with bad manners that they did not care about our problems at all (as it sounds!). Non professional costumer service projects a terrible image of the company.

Ryanair dishonest and not up-front
by herbal14 ,Oct 03 '08
Pros: Still cheaper if you can get through the crap.
Cons: Dishonest Cheats
I have just wasted hours trying to organise a holiday on the back of a no taxes £1 flight special offer. After arranging everything and being given the on-line price of £2 a flight, I then go through ridiculous amount of extras and small print - you really have to read this stuff in order to avoid being clobbered with huge bills at the airport. Then because at each stage you have to check the terms and conditions, it then times you out so you have to start the whole process again. After getting through that you are then clobbered with a further £32 just to pay for the thing - even by debit card.

So for each its £8 just to check in, £24 to check in a bag, £8 to not be at the end of the cue getting on and £32 to pay on-line.

Oh how very cheap!
by lizzii ,Apr 30 '04
Pros: Very cheap airfares to an within Europe
Cons: Basic travel with basic seats
So i wanted to go to Scotland but didn't want to pay an extortionate amount - welcome to Ryanair. The online facilities were easy to use and it was just as easy to book. No faffing about, just straight foward pages of easy to read info; remember that you do need a printer though as this is a ticketless airline!
Of course being my first flight ever it would have been nice to have the comforts of one of the bigger and more expensive airlines, but Ryanair does just what it says - no more and no less. It flies you to your destination with the minimum of fuss, and it has to be said the minimum of creature comforts, but all in all you could expect a lot less at their prices. Check the website for some really amazing prices, but bare in mind the prices do not include taxes, and this can take a £10 return flight up to about £30, but even so this still seems to be the cheapest around.
Add it to your favourites if you do regular short flights - you could save a fortune.

You get what you pay for.
by theetraveller ,Oct 20 '07
Pros: Cheap fares, many destinations, excellent safety record.
Cons: Not so great staff, some unusual airports.
When you think about flying ryanair you think about the No Frills and cheap fares. Which is what this review is about.

ryanair make clear that their service is a No Frills service, They Don't claim to be excellent in customer service, provide meals on flights for free, or imply that they have in flight entertainment on their flights.

Ryanair offers exactly what they say they do. Affordable flights, And yes they may not go to the biggest most known airports, or provide free meals, or excellent customer service, but honestly what to you expect for such cheap fares?
ryanair offers flights that are affordable to almost anyone, Their concept of bringing flying to people that would probably travel by coach, rail, ferry or other form of transport is what their No Frills is all about.
The airine is what it says it is, no frills, pay cheap fares and expect the service that you pay for and that is what I do anytime I fly ryanair I know not to expect great service, or great staff.

If you fly ryanair you should accept that the price you pay for flying cheap is the ryanair experience you get.

Beware the fees, and baggage allowance/charges
by bugsye ,Nov 04 '04
Pros: they make Easyjet look great!
Cons: Complete waste of time and money. No customer service at all.
We flew Ryanair from London to Dublin and back. They charged us a total of 200euro for our bags, Easyjet charged nothing for the same bags on our flight from Amsterdam to London even though we were 2kgs over their limit. Our Flight from Dublin to London was 5 hours late, they gave us no reason why our flight was delayed, and no apology either. We had to change gates a total of 5 times as well. As a result we missed our connecting flight back to the U.S. If the flight had been 3 hours late we still would have made it. Ultimately it cost us a total 700euros: 200 for checked baggage in excess of 15kg, 400 (200 x 2) for us to change our tickets on the flight that we missed and another 100 for a hotel next to the lovely Gatwick airport. Literally 60-70% of the people on that flight swore they would never fly Ryanair again. I was one of them. Ryanair, get stuffed!

NEVER FLY AGAIN WITH RYANAIR
by splashman ,Dec 28 '03
Pros: cheap, plenty of destinations
Cons: BAD CUSTOMER RELATION, shy to reply, check in staff need customer relation skills
They lost all my work equipment on route to Hahn, when reported the staff just couldn`t give a damm using a set script that I must contact Head Office. On my return the next day after a waisted journey I attempted to get some help from the staff at Stansted, Hahn what a joke these people are, they also tapped a few details in the computer and said my baggage is on a world trace and I must now get in touch with head office and promptly got up and walked off ??????
Head office have now 5 weeks later told me that we still have a worldtrace but it isn`t our fault you should claim direct from security at Stansted. Basically they have cost me over £2220 so far in lost income and a lost machine, given me BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE plenty of stress and a very NASTY TASTE in my mouth. RYAN AIR WILL NEVER GET ANY GOOD PRESS FROM MYSELF and I will never allow any of my 25 staff to travel Ryan air whilst working on my time.

WORST AIRLINE EVER
by gabbygyrl7 ,Jun 09 '05
Pros: NONE!!! Ended up not saving any money because of the cab ride....
Cons: LOST MONEY, TIME, AND AIRPORTS TOO CRAZY TO SEEM SAFE, NO LINES, JUST CROWDS
Ive flown over 20 times in the past year, and RyanAir was definitely the worst airline.

They have airports outside of cities just for them. The airports are tiny and extremely unorganized.

They have shuttles to get to these airports which cost at least 10 euros, so you don't really save money. They didn't give us any information about the shuttles, and the fact that there is only one for each flight. we got there almost 3 hours ahead of time and the shuttle had left and there was no way to get there but a 120EURO cab ride!!!!! Ridiculous, many other people were in our situation too.

I highly recommend spending the extra 20 euro somewhere else and saving time, money, and hassle. Wish I had gotten this advice, for this was my worst travel experience ever.

Dreadful Ryanair
by johnepinion ,Jan 14 '04
Pros: none
Cons: Shocking customer service.
I arrived at the check in desk at Stansted airport 40 minutes before departure, having booked and paid for the Ryanair ticket the previous week. The Ryanair check in woman would not allow me to check in, as I missed their deadline by a matter of seconds ! There was not another flight to my destination until the following day. I asked for her Ryanair manager and he also was unhelpful. I had to buy another ticket to fly on a later flight. What a scam. Out of hundred of flights with different airlines over the years Ryanair is in a league of its own in being the worst.

Girona, 30th october 2003
by soopowl ,Nov 01 '03
Pros: Girona is a lovely city
Cons: Ryanair are extremely poor at providing information, and show contempt for their customers.
Having reserved 2 seats on Ryanair flight FR9805 from Girona to Stansted, due to depart at 14.30, it was depressing to find ourselves still in the airport at 20.00. We were told that the plane had technical difficulties, but were given no useful information about when we might be able to depart. People using their mobile phones to contact friends discovered that it was still on the ground in Bournemouth, but at no time did Ryanair send anyone into the departures lounge to speak to us. I don't know what time the flight left, because we walked out in disgust at 20.30 and stayed the night in a hotel. I can understand airlines having technical problems, but feel that people have the right to be kept informed of what is going on. We were disgusted with the lack of information, which showed a complete disregard for their passengers. I would advise people travelling on Ryanair to pack a supply of food, drink, and books, etc, especially if they have children with them, and to have their mobile phone charged so they can get their own information.

Nastier than strictly necessary
by ryanoid ,Nov 28 '04
Pros: Usually cheaper than the other options
Cons: Unhelpful, unfriendly, will gouge you if at all possible
Ryanair is a perfectly good airline to fly if you book early, don't carry much luggage, have no special requirements, and you are certain that nothing will arise that will require you to engage with any aspect of the airline's "customer service".

One thing to be particularly aware of is your baggage allowance. It was recently confirmed during a court case here in Ireland that Ryanair's ground staff are set a monthly quota as to how much money they take in in additional baggage fees. Anything over the limit will be charged for, and it will often cost you more than your original airfare.

I've always suspected that Ryanair's customer service and overall flying experience didn't really have to be quite so unpleasant. Having flown on Jetstar, an Australian carrier operating an almost identical model, my suspicions are confirmed. Jetstar do almost everything the same way as Ryanair: unreserved seating, ticketless check-in, strict check-in closing times, pay for your food onboard, low fares etc. However they still manage to provide a comfortable flying experience and excellent customer service. I don't see any reason why Ryanair couldn't do the same.

Much better than expected
by ehorowit ,Sep 04 '06
Pros: Very inexpensive. On time. New Equipment.
Cons: Slightly chaotic at boarding (no assigned seats)
I just completed a vacation which included Dublin and Edinburgh. In order to minimize costs, I did a round trip from NY to Dublin using one of the major carriers and used RyanAir to and from Edinburgh. I was impressed by their prices but a bit concerned about the quality of their aircraft and pilots. I had also read some reviews complaining about cancelled flights and cramped leg space. I was actually very impressed with the overall service. The flights landed on time and were not particularly harrowing. They seem to use fairly new Boeing equipment. The leg space was not any more cramped than any other airline. They don't appear to have any first class accommodations. They also don't assign specific seats to passengers - instead, they assign you a number when you check in and let people board based on numbered groupings. On the whole, I would definitely recommend Ryanair. Using them enabled me to reduce my airlines costs by more than 50%.

Ryanair
by rosie1978 ,Sep 02 '05
Pros: Cheap, comfortable, friendly staff.
Cons: Cheap seats very difficult to get hold of.
I fly using Ryanair frequently and find them to be cheap, friendly and convenient.
The planes are all in good condition and are comfortable. The ease of booking is also a plus point for me.
It is disappointing how quickly the cheap seats go, but I guess that is to be expected.
All in all a good service though and few delays in my experience.

Really dissatisfied
by ihateryanair ,Aug 02 '06
Pros: They have some good routes.
Cons: The have a Soviet style attitude to their paying customers.
I propose “A Ryanair” as a new type of award. Given to a company who holds its customers in utter contempt, and is bloody-minded above and beyond the call of duty. They have taken over from the much-lamented British Rail as the company most likely to make travel a living hell.
Ryanair’s customers fly with them because they have to. They need to travel, and Ryanair, by being entrepreneurial, have secured good routes. What we don’t see is the back room deals, that bar any competition. They criticise BAA as a monopoly, but only because they cannot be bullied by the likes of Mr O’Leary. They masquerade as being cheap, yet never tire of hidden costs or fakes taxes to rip off the unsuspecting.
It is a mark of true genius that Ryanair is hated equally by their staff and their customers. It is high time that the rest of the airline industry stopped be scared, and started taking them on for the cowboys that they are.

delayed luggage
by dr_rog ,Jul 07 '05
Pros: cheap
Cons: no support, limited weight restriction, no complaints procedure, unwilling to accept responsibility
On a recent business trip to Rome Ryanair lost my luggage for 2 days and as such I had to go out and buy some essentials so that I could go and do my customer training - I bought 2 x shirts 1 x trousers 2 x underwear 2 x socks, toothbrush and toothpaste and a deodorant (hardly extravagant) and the grand total was approximately 280 Euros. I reported this to both my insurance and RyanAir who would not process my claim as it was 2 days too late. They are not prepared to do anything even in good faith.

I would never fly them EVER again and I will recommend all my friends and colleagues to avoid such an ill-mannered, incompetently run, shambolic airline.

Its a disgrace that there is no other recourse than to keep sending faxes to a faceless non-person.

Flight from Rome (Ciampino)-total incompetence
by c_han ,Sep 10 '05
Pros: Ha! Well it was cheap. I guess you get what you pay for.
Cons: Disorganised, unhelpful and they don't seem to care about customers at all.
Our flight from Rome to Stansted airport was cancelled due to bad weather (actually told us why exactly but I just assume this to be the case). That obviously was out of Ryanair's hands as I'm not expecting them to be in control of Rome's weather system. However, I do expect a lot more organisation and information, none of which we received. The airport was extremely short-staffed and I do understand that it must be horrible to deal with hundreds of irate and very upset people but just some information goes a long way instead of being shunting people from one end of the "terminal" to another for no purpose whatsoever The way in which the re-bookings were made were a complete shambles; absolutely chaotic. The announcements were laughable and no help. It was only through word of mouth that we were able to get to the right place. Never, ever again.

Quality Service
by gail11 ,Oct 09 '05
Pros: Excellent value for money if booked in plenty of time.
Cons: Bad value if you want to travel at last minute.
I've travelled 6 times so far and will use them in future. No delays from Liverpool and no delays from Murcia (San Javier). Keep up the good work Ryanair, I like the fact that you can always choose your own seat on all my journeys so far I've been lucky to get the fire exit :)
