The Windjammer Legacy

by doug2705eads , Apr 28 '04
Pros: Very casual and with a friendly crew, good food, and ample deck space for all.
Cons: Due to the short distances - not much sails-up time and this was missed.
"Ships are the nearest thing to dreams that hands have ever made." -Robert N. Rose Why V.I.? For any reason, whether it is business, or a land vacation, the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean offer a surreal scenic canvas and there are ...

Those were the days.

by manxjack , Aug 24 '05
Pros: Still something of the old Windjammer experience, but fading.
Cons: Too big. Fake sailor. Excessive rules make it less fun than hitherto.
I want to preface my remarks by stating that, in my opinion, "doug2705eads" review of his Legacy cruise seems about as thorough and fair as possible. It's also beautifully written. I commend his review to those readers who may be considering a ...

An Adventure at Sea

by wakegirl1967 , Jul 26 '05
Pros: Lovely beaches & small islands
Cons: Only one towel per person per day
When we arrived in Miami Hurricane Dennis was getting ready to hit the Florida Keys so we were not sure if our first Windjammer Cruise would happen or not. When we arrived at the cruise ship terminal we could see the masts of this beautiful sailing ...

First Time Cruisers

by joyce0505 , Mar 02 '00
Pros: casual, relaxed, FUN
Cons: cruise wasn't long enough
This was my husband's and my first cruise experience. We were celebrating our 15th anniversary and wanted a relaxing, casual vacation. The Legacy was the perfect choice. We sailed from San Juan the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The minute we stepped...

Disappointing experience...

by aquasea , Jul 18 '00
Pros: casual atmosphere
Cons: disorganized, safety issues, lack of information,
Last April my husband and I sailed on the legacy from San Juan, PR.
We had looked forward to a cruise different from the other 4 we had
taken in the past. Unfortunately we found that different does not necessarily mean better.
To begin,...

Great trip!

by peacheshd , Aug 10 '04
Pros: Anyone who wants fun, relaxation, to be "on the water" its awsome!!
Cons: The 5 day trip was really 3 1/2 days. Check ins late, check out early!
My Husband and I decided to take a Windjammer barefoot cruise, rather then a large luxury cruise ship mainly because we love the water. We both agreed that the larger ships seemed more like a hotel on land; where you could easily forget you’re ...

Kids Program, that Wasn't

by sepini2 , Jun 14 '02
Pros: More laid back, less-beaten path
Cons: Customer Service needs work
May/June 2002, my 11 year old son and I were looking for something neat to do. I came across Windjammer's Web Page and called them regarding available cruises and kid's Programs. I was told they had 2 cabins left (many people on our cruise were to be...

Pros: The crew, the company, the food, the atmosphere!
Cons: To short!
If you are into kickin' back, good food, great company, and the most attentive crew, then this is the cruise for you!! My husband and I just returned on January 24, 2005 from our very first cruise! Needless to say, we couldn't have picked a better ...

Windjammer Legacy

by angela4862 , Mar 25 '05
Pros: Great Crew Small number of passengers
Cons: Food was cold and not very good
Overall a fun and laidback experience. My husband and I wanted a more intimate and casual cruising experience, and that's just what we got. The itinerary was good, except for Water Island. We anchored just off of St. Thomas by the airport and swam ...

Buyer Beware!!!

by norgeblonde , Aug 16 '07
Pros: Windjammer used to be great; now is on a fast-track to destruction. Too bad.
Cons: Poor management, serious cash flow issues, ship is filthy, no customer service dept.
Purchased passage on SV Legacy for 8/11/07-8/18/07 Costa Rica trip. After flying from California to Costa Rica, took a 3 hr transfer bus to Legacy. When we arrived, we were told that the crew had literally scattered a few hours earlier because they had ...

Windjammer Legacy. St Thomas Spring Itinerary

by eye144 , Jul 21 '05
Pros: The great Snorkeling, and relaxing, unique time out.
Cons: Cabins were initially hot for 24 hours.
This was a very calm cruise. It was very close to the islands and therefore the seas were not rocking the ship enough to be a real concern. It was really made for barefoot and swimsuit type of casual! We had a great time. It was so casual and ...

Getting back refund was like pulling teeth.

by hlewagastir , Dec 12 '05
Pros: They did eventually refund my deposit.
Cons: Seven weeks, the threat of legal action, multiple emails and phone calls were necessary.
My wife and I booked a cruise with Windjammer last spring. When my wife took a new job, we discovered that she wasn't going to be eligible for a large enough number of vacation days by the time of the cruise, and decided to go ahead and cancel, planning ...

Not a sailing adventure
by origami13 ,Mar 28 '06
Pros: how can you not enjoy 6 days in the Virgin Islands?
Cons: THIS IS NOT A SAILING ADVENTURE
Every picture you see of the Legacy in their brochures and at their website show the Legacy under full sail (and in daylight). Their website offers:

"Sailing is romantic, exciting, and adventurous. Our historic ships captivate sailors and land lubbers alike. Ducking under booms, leaning against the railing a few feet above the sea, watching the crew work the winches and climb the masts are constant reminders that these are legendary vessels."

This never happened - we were never under full sail and with the few sails hoisted we were always motor sailing - no tacking, etc - the booms were never let out. The generators onboard are on 24/7 and provide a constant noise and vibration making sleeping difficult.

I currently have a trial date scheduled in September 2006 in Small Claims Court claiming false and deceptive advertising. Windjammer's response is that they are under no obligation to ever raise a sail.

July 4th 2004, Great trip, great people
by johnriorancho ,Jul 22 '04
Pros: Staff, Crew, Food, relaxing days.
Cons: Music was way to loud every night, even at dinner.
We had a great trim and plan to return in two years. The crew was great all the way around. I think the office staff could use some help. The food was great, not a 5 star hotel and I did not expect one. I have no complaints and my 12year old son had a great time with the other kids.
