My husband and I visited Alexandria in June 2006. We had a private driver and guide. It was an awful experience. We stayed at a "western" hotel chain and it was quite dirty, nothing like this chains other hotels. The primary tourists in Alexandria are other Islamic Arabs/Egyptians. There is a sense of hostility towards westerners. The supposed ancient sites are poorly maintained and overrun by tourists. In addition, these sites offer very little to actually see except gutted shells and/or crumbling paving stones. The traffic din goes on 24 hours a day and gridlock is the name of the game. You can't lay on the beach without the Islamic people staring at you. Thankfully we spent the bulk of the trip in Cairo. If you visit Alexandria make it a day trip from there. Don't go as a single woman. I took a walk by myself along the waterfront and was frightened.
