Pros: Beautiful city 'voll mit Kultur', excellent food, and friendly people. Cons: Expensive
I've decided to kick off my trip to Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe with a review of Vienna (or Wien "auf Deutsch".) Wir müssen das Hotel finden! (We have to find the hotel!): Our first real sight of Vienna was attempting to ...
Pros: Beautiful Buildings, great Coffee and cakes. Cons: More than a tad expensive. Dislike Opera? - Vienna isn't the place to go.
Getting into Vienna involved a pretty easy train journey from Bratislava in Slovakia. The journey takes about 1 hour; they run frequently and get you within striking distance of civilisation. We arrived at the SudBahnhof in Vienna, and then took a 10 ...
Pros: A beautiful, fascinating, historic, cultural masterpiece of a place Cons: Time is too short!!
I have been captivated, my heart has been captured. Circumstances dictated a change of vacation this summer. So, instead of going to Florida (as usual) we chose a weeks break in Vienna, capital of Austria. This city is a beautiful, fascinating, histo ...
Pros: historical sites, culture, public transport, friendly laid-back city Cons: only in the eye of the beholder
We stayed in Vienna for two weeks in November 2002. One of us spent a university year in Vienna many moons ago. We are recently retired and travel frequently, trying to time our trips to the off-season. While Vienna started off as an exercise...
Pros: The Austrian culture, architecture, baroque churches and sheer elegance Cons: Maybe a little quiet for some - not as rocking as London or Madrid
Vienna is one of the legendary cities of the world. It was the centre of one of the greatest and longest living empire's that Europe has ever seen. And reminders of this past greatness are on every street corner and also it is a city poised to take...
Pros: Buildings, Culture, food, Cons: Price, Too quiet for some,
I visited Vienna last summer for only about a few days so can not offer an exhaustive review of the city. However my experience there leads me to write a review anyway. I have over the last few years visited London, Amsterdam, Dublin and lots of other ...
Pros: Fabulous music, art, architecture, and excellent public transportation. World's best coffee. Cons: Expensive! (And, if you are overweight, embarrassing.)
Background and Christmas Markets: My wife and I visited Vienna (Wien, in German) for the first time in December-January, 2007-08. I had always wanted to see the Christmas markets in Austria and Bavaria, so we put Vienna as the start and end point of ...
Without consulting the Psychic Network, I will tell you that I’m 99.9% certain that the floors in your house or apartment are flat. What about the windows? Are they of the same shape? Are they horizontally on the same distance from the floor? Most...
Pros: very diverse city - much to do and see Cons: rude people; too many tourists (in the summer)
I have traveled much of Europe, and I have to say that Vienna ("Wien," in German) is not one of my favorite cities. Last summer, I backpacked with a friend through Central Europe for two-weeks. (See my profile for my earlier reviews on Salzburg...
Pros: Very clean Cons: Too many to list here: see review
I lived in Vienna for a month when I was 13. I thought it was boring and provincial. I revisited twelve years later with an open mind -- and I was disappointed again.
Looking at Vienna today, it was difficult to imagine the hustle-and-bustle...
Pros: You learn so much more history that the textbooks teach you Cons: with a weaker U.S. dollar it will cost you a bit more.
We recently visited Vienna in June of 2006 and I found this city to be as magical as the Johan Strauss waltzes describe it. It is full of culture and it is a must destination for art and opera lovers. It is very cosmopolitan as many ...
Pros: Scale, Pace, Transportation, Art, Architecture, Cleanliness, Desserts Cons: Not the most cosmopolitan of major European capitals (people-wise), Food (for some)
I am an expat living in Vienna. I approached this city, initially, like most people, as a tourist. Since then, many people have come to here to visit me, and this has afforded the chance to play tour guide. The result is that now, I have more than a...
Pros: Great architecture, Close to center of the city, Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" Cons: None.
The Belvedere Palaces are located in the heart of Vienna, Austria. They are within walking distance of the Ring. This elegant palace is one of the masterpieces of Baroque Art, and is a must-see for tourists traveling through Vienna. The Palace was built...
Pros: Palaces, art and dessert Cons: I could do without the rain
Whenever I go to Vienna, it seems to rain and the days I spent there last summer were positively blustery, cold and wet. Long outdoor strolls were out of the question. Here's what we did:
1) Toured the imperial apartments and the imperial...
Vienna is known as the musical capital of the world thanks to the yields of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Haydn and many more composers born in this magnificent city.
I usually do not like capital cities because of internationalism and...
Pros: Compact center with interesting architecture, great food and drink Cons: Extremely hot in summer, bone chilling cold in winter, too many tourists
Review Topic: Sights & Attractions
This is the sixth part in a series of articles I wrote while travelling around Europe for two months in spring 2000.
Pros: Wonderful atmosphere; wealth of things to see and do; culture and fun ahoy ! Cons: Weather can be very cold from November through to spring
I went to Vienna a few weeks ago and spent a week there with some friends who showed me some local bars and made me promise not to tell anyone about them so they arent spoiled.
I can honestly say that it is one of the nicest cities I have ever...
The interior decor of this palace is richer than a Sacher torte. Rococo gilded swirls on the walls, crystal chandeliers, immense paintings, Gobelin tapestries and rosewood paneling. The stories of the palace's inhabitants are even richer. Empires won...
Pros: Music, parks, architecture and museums, food, coffee houses, numerous summer music and movie festivals Cons: Opera season doesn't start till September.
I love Vienna! It is absolutely beautiful. And, of all the places that I have been to, it is my favorite city. There are four things that stand out in the list of many reasons why I love Vienna.
Pros: The Charm of Eastern Europe... Cons: ...at the Price of Western Europe
Vienna is like a warm cup of coffee on a cool Sunday morning.
When you talk about cities with character, it is hard not to think of Vienna. With it’s myriad of architectural styles and a robust cultural atmosphere, the city on the Danube...
Pros: An architectural marvel with lots of history attached Cons: Can be crowded, only partly accessible for disabled visitors
One of the many highlights in Vienna is Schloss Schönbrunn (open 8:30-17:00, to 16:30 November-March, to 19:00 in July and August; prices vary depending on what you want to see, a medium package about $20).
Pros: Beautiful scenery Cons: The jet lag when you get back to the states
My tour of Salzburg and Vienna was during the most beautiful time of the year, winter. I went with a group of students from my high school choir. We visited Mozart's birthplace, the many cathedrals and the graveyard where so many great composers are...
Pros: BEAUTIFUL, easy to get around, not expensive Cons: not the most friendly place, restaurants & bars close early
To get straight to the point, Vienna is absolutely beautiful and is well worth visiting, but don't linger. If you're like me and enjoy visiting a place to see more than just the touristy sites, and really enjoy meeting the 'natives' (oh, the Vienners...
Pros: Atmosphere, great coffee, great desserts Cons: Can be expensive ($8-10 for coffee and pastry)
I am one of those people who cannot face the world without two cups of coffee. Vienna, with a cafe on every corner, is my kind of city. After studying there for a semester, I became almost an expert on cafes in the city (multiply four months times...
Pros: read on... Cons: Not for those who like the easy, travel book vacation. This is a city that requires exploration and interest.
Before I begin this review, I should say I am a bit biased. My trip to Vienna was so astronomically fantastic that I don't think I'd ever be able to look at the city in a negative way. That said: I had to go to Vienna. It had been a big dream since I was...
Pros: People, Food, Drink, Cafes. Bizi Pizza, Small Streets Cons: If you go during tourist season, you will understand why some Viennease do not like foreigners.
I have got to tell you about my experience in Vienna, Austria!!! When I arrived in Vienna for an extended (8 months) stay I was buzzing with energy and full of curiosity. What did this city have to offer me, a young professional who never really...
Pros: Royal Tour is better value Cons: Vienna Sight Seeing Tour over priced, not professional
We went to Budapest with Vienna Sight Seeing Tour (http://www.viennasightseeingt
ours.com),
and to Prague with Royal Tour. We were very disappointed with Vienna Sight-Seeing Tour. There were only 7 of us in the tour. The tour was actually done by Euro ...
Pros: Great museums, plenty of gelato. Cons: Significant travel time from core European countries. Smokey cafes.
Vienna is described in many travel books as 'the Easternmost of the Western European countries...' I think this is actually a pretty fair description. My wife and I spent three nights there, toured several museums, and enjoying local restaurants.
...
Pros: Upscale/civilized, Viennese Coffee and desserts, classical music. Cons: expensive, very cold in the winter
As a student, Vienna is definitely a place that one must watch his wallet. Thankfully, there were numerous ways of keeping expenditures somewhat reasonable. As I said earlier, Vienna is a place that can go either way for the typical American student...
Vienna is one of the nicest cities you will ever visit. It is clean, the people are nice, and there is an overall sophisticated feeling throughout the city. We stayed at the Vienna Hilton AM Stadtpark. We had two rooms each costing about $150.00 per...
Pros: Lots of commercial areas, cappucinos, deserts Cons: It's a city with lots of shops
I travelled to a handful of European cities last April (00) with a student group from my high school. We visited Prague, Vienna, Salzburg and Venice. While we only had a few days to see the sites of each of these cities, I didn't feel that I saw very...
Pros: Absolutely magnificent city Cons: A little more expensive than home
I'm currently a study-abroad student at the University of Vienna through an enchange program at my home university, and I have loved Vienna ever since the day I got off the plane. There is so much history here, and so much to do, that I can't get enough...
Vienna and its neighboring townships are some of the kindest, brightest regions in Western Europe. The streets of 'Wien', as it is called in German, are clean, populated and very quaint. There is am old-world charm about the place that reminds me of...
Pros: The only guide to Vienna you need. Cons: rather heavy to tote around
Before my first trip to Austria I read every guidebook to Vienna
available in English, and I took several of them along with me.
After repeating this experience again on a subsequent trip, I feel I
have a good grasp on how useful the...
Pros: n enjoyable large city Cons: can't go enough
Vienna is another of those 'must see' places in your education of travel.
It is a beautiful city with its' architecture dating back to the days when the Hapsburgs ruled the area.
In fact, you can start your journey at their palace, the...
Pros: Wonderful for an opera and architecture lover! Cons: Not for the un-musical.
This review does not recommend this city, only because it is often touted as a great vacation spot for people of all tempraments and interests. It' not. It's actually more along the lines of a music lover and culture addict that this city appeals to....
Being a notorious traveller I love getting out and about. Vienna has clearly been one of the highlights so far. I lived in Austria most of my life but now, living abroad for about 3/4 of the year I realize how wonderful Vienna is compared to cities I...
Pros: some good sites Cons: too much like other cities, especially other Austrian ones
Don't get me wrong, Vienna is a gigantic city, and a nice one at that. But unless you are a classical music lover or clock museum patron it is not necessarily anything special. I may have come away with this impression because I have arrived from...
Pros: Lots of old world culture Cons: Can be a bit stale
See an opera in Mozart's city for anywhere from $10 to 200. I have enjoyed a number of cultural experiences in Vienna, but they have opera down pat. If you don't mind sitting/standing in line for a few hours, you can get a Stehplatz (Standing place) for...
Our days there involved a lot of outdoor sightseeing, just walking around gawking at the rococo, baroque architecture. The Belvedere & Lipizzaners were big thumbs up w/our group. Shopping for food at the fabulous Julius Meinl market, another plus.
Every evening we parents would do our trade-off/tag-team jogging routine --1 stays w/the kids, 1 goes for an hr. run along the city's main canal/river. Relaxing & scenic -& a great running course.
I'd also throw in that a side trip to Bratislava (1hr train ride) was well worth it. Only wish we had time to do Budapest too (2hr train ride).
