Pros: An amazing city with a wonderful mix of the old and new. Cons: Hot in the summer.
My wife and I celebrated our thirtieth anniversary with a trip to Italy. We stayed in Rome for a week before moving on to other parts of the country. We decided not to do Italy through a tour but rather on our own. We used the internet including ...
Pros: May be one of the best places in the world for people watching. Cons: If you don't like watching people, too bad.
This isn't a typical review of Rome. It's an extract from the journal I kept during my recent trip to Italy. So, it doesn't mention a lot a specifics about Rome, but I hope it creates an impression that makes you want to visit this amazing city (but ...
Pros: An incredible mixture of history, legend, museums and monuments Cons: The price tag can be steep!
Whether you are staying a day or a week, make sure that you bring a good pair of walking shoes with you to Rome. This large and somewhat chaotic city can seem difficult to master at first, especially during the summer months and the height of the...
Rome is full of startling contradictions- it is the centre of Christianity yet has a 24-hour Tarot channel largely hosted by an effeminate man named Luis. Italy is the world's seventh largest economy but with a social structure more akin to a teetering ...

I read with great interest in this morning's newspaper that the ancient Roman Colosseum, site of so much killing in the days of the Roman Empire, is entering a new era. The Greek National Theater has put together a production of Oedipus Rex, which...
Pros: Stunning art in a stunning setting without the crowds Cons: Funny opening hours, advance booking required
I've finally come to the conclusion that in this age of mass consumption there is very little difference between a visit to the British Museum and one to your local shopping centre. Also I'm fed up with queuing hours in order to join an army of ...
Pros: Unique blend of history, religion and culture - great ruins, churches, and museums Cons: Can get crowded and hot in summer months
While Paris may be more beautiful, Florence may have more art, and New York may have more energy – Rome is my favorite city in the world. Nowhere else will you find such a unique combination of history, religion, art, and culture. It has ancient ruins, ...
Pros: The historic sites are amazing and beautiful. Cons: I preferred other cities in Italy.
Rome was the last stop on the vacation I took with my mother in March. We had two and a half days in Rome (part of that was at Vatican City) and I wanted to make sure I saw as much a possible while I was there.
Pros: In what inventive way can I suggest the richness of the Eternal City's history? Cons: The newer monuments seem laughably grandiose compared to the older.
Part 1: In which the omens of travel and room and board portend misery
The trip to Rome hurt. It hurt because our flexi-rail passes were good for any train that we wanted to take from Venice to Rome, but not for particular seats on a...
Pros: Beautiful, pedestrian-friendly city Cons: Need to allocate a week for your first visit to see everything
My Roman Holiday took place in late April and early May of 2001. Since we flew in and out of Rome, we both started and ended our trip to Italy in the Greater Rome area.
Pros: The art, the history, the gorgeous churches more plenteous than Starbucks in the U.S. Cons: Incessant traffic, the noise of thousands of motorbikes, the utterly unpredictable victuals, the filthy subways.
You may be reading a lot about my trip to Italy over the next few weeks, so I'll skip the formalities and get right to it. After I say that as much as I enjoyed Italy, two weeks seems like a long time, especially when your country and the cities you...
Pros: History, lots of things too see and so, food, amazing museums, Gelato Cons: Too much to see, crowded around major sight, fear of being pickpocketed

Pros: Tranquil setting for a romantic picnic overlooking Rome. Cons: Some uphill walking.
The "Borghese Gardens", named for the 16th century Roman family, covers almost 1/3 of the northern part of Rome. It is more like an enormous natural park, than a garden.... plan on taking something to eat and drink; it is a great place for a...
Pros: Rich in history and tradition Cons: My gosh it's hot
Hello there. For the past month I've been recharging my batteries by backpacking through Europe. I can't lie the bar exam was tough. In fact, I'm sure that some of the proctors scraped some the rest of my brain matter away as they collected my...

Pros: Fantastic history, architecture, and food Cons: Dirty streets, warnings about pickpockets and gypsies robbing you
Being a first time visitor to Rome, I wanted to see as much as possible. This meant going on a tour. Our tour guide told us we were in Europe to experience as much as we could, and we could rest when we got home. Well, our tour of Italy started and...
Pros: So much to see Cons:So crowded: so many others trying to see the same things
At the beginning of the 21st century (Rome's 28th), "eternal city" seems to mean "pereptual traffic jam." Rome really is clogged with cars and overrun with visitors, especially in this Jubilee Year. The great pagan and Christian sites are mostly ...
Pros: Good food, wonderful architecture Cons: Smells a bit
Well, I'm back from my Christmas present of a trip to Rome and boy do my feet hurt. But it was rather wonderful! I've decided not to do just a list of all the attractions like the Vatican, etc, but be a bit more basic, a bit more gritty, that is, my own ...
Pros: Fun, safe, easy to walk from place to place. Cons: Better pizza in New York.
If you have the means, you should go to Rome. It is an awesome city steeped in history. I spent three days there this past September of 2002 and loved it. I have a very short attention span and travel alone so three days was enough time see what I...
Pros: The greatest nightlife. Chicest people. Most unique venues. Hands down. Cons: Watch out for aggressive (but often hot) Italian men (and women) and pricey venues.
Rome definitely has one of the most vibrant and exciting nightlifes that I have ever experienced. Most people who I've spoken with have little regard for the night-time events and venues in Rome, but that's because most of the best places to go are kept ...

Pros: Wonderful historical and archeological sites. Spring in the Eternal City! Cons: Can be exhausting trying to get in all the sites.
Like the tradition says, if you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain you will return to Rome. Our last trip to Italy, that included a stop in Rome, was 30+ years ago but we did make it back, so the tradition may have some truth to it.
Pros: The Eternal City has plenty for the compulsive shopper and the curious tourist alike Cons: Baking heat, lethal traffic, and your own personal pickpockets - but I still love it.

Pros: the scenery, the history, i could go on and on Cons: don't drink the water in Rome

Pros: ruins everywhere Cons: who really know what all the ruins are?
In Rome I went on a pub crawl with a bunch of other English speakers. You pay $25 to bar-hop and get a shot of some kind of liquor at each. You meet on the Spanish steps at a certain hour (I think it is 8 p.m.)and you pass by historical monuments as...
My first visit to the most famous capital of the ancient world was on the occasion of my marriage in 1987.
It was to be the start of a love affair with this wonderful city that continues to this day.
Pros: Cheap for US visitors, and a fully cultural city. Cons: Beware of the child that offer you a newspaper.
The Eternal City
Italy has a reputation for being an expensive destination for Europe, but you can still find city breaks very reasonable accommodation for 45 usd a night or less.
Everyone seems to point out the same things, esp. when talking about the "cons" of Rome: cost, traffic, heat, crowds, pickpockets, etc. This really bugs me. These things are NOT cons, but rather the things you should embrace about Rome. I spent over...

I have mixed feelings about my visit to Rome last week. On one hand, you have a city that has an incredible amount of history and some of the most breath taking sites to see. On the other hand, you have small stagnant streets that smell of pollution...
Pros: Rome is wonderful! Cons: You have to brave their streets in order to get to these places. Frightful!
I've recently returned from a spell in Europe, and I have to say that I am still in a semi-daze after visiting Rome. I know this sounds melodramatic, but it's the honest truth. When you leave Rome, if you see the right things, you will be a different...
Pros: rich in culture, history, amazing buildings Cons: hot, not handicap accessible,
One of the oldest and most famous cities in the world, Rome, is noted for its richness in culture and history. The remains of the ancient civilization and the stronghold of Christianity is largely what makes it so special. A trip to Rome should be...
Pros: A city worthy of visiting & revisiting; both the sites and the new leather Cons: Can get hot and sticky

Rome may be hard to navigate, but during my visit there this summer I discovered the best tourist spots to see and the best restaurants the city has to offer. My best advice to anyone touring Rome is that you hire a tour guide. Touring Rome without a...
Pros: Scenery, architecture, romance, scooters and food. Cons: Can feel too tourist-oriented and expensive if you're not careful.

Pros: Art, culture, food, sights! Cons: Women-- beware going out at night without the company of a man
As some one who used to live in Roma, I can't say enough about it. It is perhaps the city with the most things to do on the planet. There are museums, cafes, parks, zoos, palaces, and even places to hike.
Until you visit Rome you don't realize how many relics are in the city. Every block is filled with ancient ruins amazing and beautiful. We traveled to all of the usual tourist places and found them breathtaking and in many cases like the Vatican...

I went to Rome last summer and absolutely loved it. There is so much to do there and so many amazing things to see, but part of the reason I loved it so much was because I found a great place to stay.
Before I get started, I should note that this review is a practical guide to Rome based on my experience there. I won't talk extensively about how amazing the Pantheon is at night, because a) you've just got to see it yourself and b) people...
Pros: Beautiful buildings, great food, good shopping Cons: Some things are very expensive

Pros: Beautiful and wonderful Cons: Never enough time.
Rome
Rome is great. You could spend years exploring its treasures. That can also be one of its problems. There is so much to see and do that Rome is, at times, a bit overwhelming.
Pros: vast collection of treasures, the building itself, the Sistine Chapel Cons: very very very big
Th Vatican Museums are rightly known for being some of the finest museums in the world. I use the plural here intentionally, although in fact, the museums are housing within the same building.. and some building it is!
Arriving in Rome, I checked into M&Js hostal, run by Roman twins named Mario and Luigi. The temperature surpassed that in Umbria by about 15 degrees, and the sky displayed a blue as taut as a drumskin. Palms rose up around Termini station,...
Pros: C'mon...It's ROME! Cons: Hairy Italian men always trying to touch us blonde chicks

Pros: Sites/history & food Cons: too little time in Roma!
January in Rome was chilly but being with an organized group with transportation & a tour guide helped! A nice local Chianti wine at lunch always warmed the heart up before taking back to the cobbled streets of Roma!
Pros: absolutely everything Cons: not that many :)

Pros: Great sights, great food, great shopping Cons: Heat and crowds in summer, crowded roads, crowded stores and crowded restaurants

Pros: Beauty created by talent Cons: noisy people who don't obey the no talking rules
There are 650 people in the State of the Vatican, created in 1506, and conquered by the Italian Army and reduced in size. In 1929, February 11, Mussolini and the Pope signed an agreement to have the Swiss Army guard it.

Pros: Everything Cons: traffic, and I hear there are way too many starlings in the fall

Pros: Art and ancient architecture: St. Peter's Basilica; the Sistine Chapel; the Coliseum Cons: Sexism; pickpockets; dirty, dirty city; rude people; bad food
I'll be the sixth person out of the 121 so far to give Rome a very low rating. Plain and simple, here is the Rome I visited: 1) The People: If you are female, you really ought to rig yourself to deliver an electric shock to the many Italian men who wil ...
Pros: Rome is a must-see Cons: Go "must see" it in the off season. Eurail is a RIPOFF.
I purchased a 3 day Eurail pass to Italy for my wife and I, which cost 306 Euro. I travelled from Rome-Florence, Florence-Venice, and Venice-Milan (a typical tourist itinerary in my opinion). Each segment required a 30 Euro supplement since we ...
Pros: Good place to view art from all over the world as well as ancient architecture. Cons: There are a lot of pick-pockets and con-artists in Rome
Rome is a good place to visit to view magnificent art or architecture. Ancient Rome and modern Rome sit right next to each other in this city. Walking among the ruins, I really felt close to history. However, I also felt unsafe. There are so many...
Pros: excellent food, excellent Italian People, family oriented people, good transit system, great trains Cons: Dangerous Romani gypsies, Yugoslav gypsies, pickpockets, cops who condone pickpockets.
I went to Rome in January 2001, I was quite unprepared for the hordes of displaced Balkans/Slavic Romani Gypsies who have now swarmed into Italy, France, and Spain.
These highly desperate people will prey on the average John Q.Tourist. They...
Pros: beautiful, a lot to do and see Cons: a little too touristy
I visited Rome during the month of July. It was extremely hot. I would recommend to go during a coller month becuase you will be walking a lot. There is no way to get bored in Rome. There are so many things to experience that you would need at least a...
Pros: The history and art in this city are immense and almost heavenly. Cons: Rome can become crowded and expensive...but it's worth it.
Rome, Italy is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Along with touring the rest of Italy, we spent 7 days in Rome for World Youth Day. At this Catholic conference there were an estimated number of 6 million extra people in Rome for over a...
Pros: great sites and historical attractions, monuments, history, culture Cons: not quite as awe inspiring as you would hope
Rome is probably one of the most influential cities of history. That being said, there are a great many things to see while in Rome. Sights such as the coliseum, the forum, and the Vatican City are all things which should be seen at least once in...
Pros: You can experience Rome's major sights in one day. Cons: You miss some of the lesser-known sights.
It may be hard to believe, but I managed to give my friends a very thorough tour of Rome in one day. We hit most of the major hotspots and tourist attractions, plus a couple of non-tourist locations. So, here it is, your very own Rome in a day...
Rome is the capital of italy and one of the world's great historic cities . It has been an important
centre of civilization for many years . Well in fact rome is known as the eternal city...
Pros: Clean, comfortable, fast railways Cons: Thievery
As the saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" is not only an understatement but is a necessary. Having been born in Italy, I know firsthand on the ins and outs of traveling in and around Italy.
Pros: Rich in culture, history, and sights Cons: Crowded and touristy
Italy is one of the more "touristy" places I've visited, and this is especially true in Rome. Nevertheless, I believe that there are many sights that cannot be missed in this city.
Although the Coliseum is crawling with tourists...
Pros: A lot of wonderful sites Cons: Not enough time, possible pickpockets, lots of people
On our trip to Europe last summer, we only had a day to see all of the sites in Rome. There was so much to see and I think we managed to see it all. If we would not have had my uncle's brother as our tour guide, I'm not sure we could have found all of...
Pros: Spectacular beauty! Cons: too many people at times, hold on to your pocketbooks
We heard the sounds of the flowing water before we actually saw the Fontana Di Trevi, or Trevi Fountain, as we Westerners call it. Neptune stands out as the center of this beautiful fountain. Above him on the left, is a setting depicting...
Pros: Architecturally perfect Cons: Difficult to photograph without a very wide-angle lens
The Parthenon is one of the most architecturally perfect structures in the world, and of the most difficult buildings to find in Rome, and certainly to photograph, because you can't get far enough away to get the whole thing in a normal camera lens....
Pros: Excellent food, good service Cons: Smoky after 9pm
After walking on "screaming legs" around many corners, zig-zagging here and there, we finally found La Campana, and went in for a dinner of artichokes - the best in town, served with the long stem, which was very tender. The zucchini was also...
Pros: Rome's parks and it's bohemian quarter Cons: not enough time to see all the splendor of Rome
In a city where Renaissance masterpieces compete with endless treasure from antiquity, Rome is much more than a city overflowing with art and architecture. It's a bustling city that offers immense charm and, yes, endless treasure.
Pros: history, lots to do, pizza, architecture Cons: polution
Rome, the city of eternity. I was there in May of 1999, where I kicked off my vacation. I spent 4 days there and I didn't see half of the amazing historical sites. Upon arriving, I immediately headed for Hotel Piccolo near the Jewish Getto area(by the...
Pros: Lots of variety and people-watching Cons: Trying to decide what you want!
The Bernini Fountain, in Piazza Navona, had 4 huge statues of men in different poses, each representing one of the four largest rivers at the time: The Nile, whose source was not known, so that man's head was covered with a towel, and there was also a...
Since there already plenty of positive comments on Rome here, I thought it is better to give you some useful addresses. I start with my favourite, which is also a well know meeting spot for locals. It is a place where dei sell ice-creams: "Gelateria...
If you are looking for romance, go to Venice. However, Rome is a great city to spend one maybe two days in. With the Vatican really close, you could almost spend a whole day around there. In Rome, you have to go to a pasta shop and get some. You have...
When i went to Rome in February i found a very reasonably price hotel called Quattro Fontaine. The hotel reception area was beautifuly decorated in a medievil style with Armour guard statues, large rugs and a stunning sofa. The hotel had fifty rooms and...
Everywhere you look in Rome, there is history... there is culture... and there is life. There is so much more to see and do than the Colesium and the Vatican City (though both of those are musts), a trip to the Pantheon and the Trevi fountain are also...
Living in Rome we are always seraching for the best restaurants. Friends told us about Sybilla restaurant which while a 40 minute drive from central Rome, sounded interesting. The restaurant is lovely and quaint. and can only be reached on foot. The...
I had the opportunity to take a trip to Italy a few years back and I loved everything but Rome!!
First off the city is dirty and the Italians there are rude. In Italy, especially Rome, it seems that everyone can speak English until you really need...
Pros: There was always something to see. There was tuns of high fashion stores too. Cons: The heat was a little crazy. But besides that Rome was amazing!
Rome is one of my favorite places in Europe! The history and the stories behind this city could keep you for weeks. The Forum was incredible. I never wanted to leave. The Colosseum was a must see. The Vatican was interesting and beautiful, but took a really long time to get through. The arcitecture of today could never be compared to that of the ancient city. This is the trip of a life time for anyone.
Vatican Tour-Colosseum Tour by jonemikalson ,Apr 12 '06
Pros: Small groups, (15 people maximum) Excellent, Experienced, English, Speaking Guides, Cons: Small groups, (15 people maximum) Excellent, Experienced, English, Speaking Guides,
My wife and I recently returned from Rome. We took tours with Presto reservations.vatican-tours.com We found the tour to be excellent. We were fortunate that the group on the day was only 5 strong, thus leaving my wife and I to have virtually a personal guided tour round the museums. Our guide, Valerio was very good indeed and seemed to know the subject well. We received confirmation of our tour within minutes by email.
Pros: all the history, beautiful, Cons: graffitti everywhere, ripoff taxis, easy to spot a tourist, people selling ripoff handbags everywhere
we had four days to do rome and i must say, it was quite a squeeze of time, considering the old saying "rome, in an eternity, is not enough". we did the basics: the spanish steps, trevi fountain, the vatican, and the roman ruins. then we decided to explore the city for ourselves. that was the most rewarding part of the trip, finding your own little restuarants filled with only italians and not one word of english surrounds you. i dont suggest trying to attempt rome in only four days, but if you must, i highly suggest exploring the city for yourself.
