Pros: Charming shops and cafes, aesthetically beautiful, international flair, and tons of bikes. Cons: I'm not there at the moment.
Most of us have heard at some point that Amsterdam, Holland has quite a reputation for debauchery in the form of legal drugs and prostitution. You've probably heard either fascinating or appalling stories about the city's famous red-light district,...
Pros: Atmosphere, history, eating and drinking Cons: Not very well-known to the general travelling public
As a graduate of the Maastricht University, writing about this city is a bit like writing about my home. Few cities have such a welcoming character and a charming atmosphere!
Maastricht is the capital of the southernmost province of Limburg...
Pros: Countryside, history in the ruins, ambiance. Cons: Off some beaten paths.
I visited Maastricht several years ago quite by accident. I would recommend it so highly I would go out of my way to see it. It is a less discovered place than many tourist destinations, and it is a visual delight. It is a walled city, and you can enter...
Pros: Great atmosphere! Exquisite restaurants, cozy parks, caves, very easy going and relaxing...and MUCH more!!! Cons: The 12 hour flight to get there :(
When many people think of going to Europe, Paris is usually the first thing to pop into their minds. I have been to Paris, and don't get me wrong, I LOVED IT!!! But if your looking for somewhere to go where you can still have lots of fun and sit back and...
Pros: Something for everyone Cons: The Netherlands are known for its rain
First thing to know is that the people in the Southern part of the Netherlands have "party" in their blood. If you are coming from the Northern regions to wonderful Maastricht, you will notice the change in the attitude of people. The...

Beautifull architecture Cons: Expensive
At first: sorry for our bad english ;-) We, three girls from Cologne, did a week "Couch Surfing" in Maastricht by some nice Maastricht people. First the Pro's: This city has it. This city has everything Cologne lost a long time ago. It's clean. It's ...
Maastricht ... the fine art of living by ssfranks ,Nov 19 '05
Pros: Quaint, away from tourists, shopping, romantic Cons: There are none.
I travel quite a bit and have spent a lot of time in the Netherlands. Maastricht is by far the best city in Holland. The theme of the city is "the fine art of living" and believe me, the people of this charming Dutch town are living life to the fullest. If you like quaint, romantic, and relaxing ... it is not to be missed! The shopping is fabulous, block after block of cobblestone streets full of some of the best, but not inexpensive, shopping in Europe. You can take your pick of the many outdoor cafes, each unique. When I think of what I love about Europe ... art, culture, cuisine, shopping, and relaxed lifestyle. Maastricht exemplifies my idea of perfection. I would take it over Paris or Florence any day. I have visited four times and it is still not enough.
Pros: Beautiful setting, beautiful backyard/moat. Loved the castle from the inside/out. Cons: Please see above. Snobbish atmostphere & majorly overpriced.
The castle was very beautiful however the beauty seemed to fade the moment we walked in the door & were treated very badly. We had made reservations prior to coming to Maastricht for two nights. We were wearing traveling clothes & were instantly looked up and down as if we were green scum out of the moat. When we went to leave the next morning for a day outing one of the owners basically snatched our room key out of my mother's hand and informed us that they would keep our key in case we would lose it. We would have to ask for the key again when we came back that evening. We were very insulted by this as well. We were all very relieved to leave Kastel Wittem and their snobby owners. Did I mention that our EXPENSIVE room smelled strongly of cigar smoke and was not even worth half the price that we paid. We are NOT picky, but would NEVER go back for another stay. Mostly because of the attitude of the owners that ran the hotel.
