I visited Belize City. I felt in order to truly get acquainted with the Belizian culture it was necessary for me to step out of the tourist traps and live as the locals do. And so we did. We actually started a small business there. But for those who are looking to visit, you might find the real Belize City hard to adjust to. The people are beautiful but they are poor and it is impossible to go anywhere without people sending their children over to ask you for money. There is also a lot of crime there, but the police do try to protect the tourists. Although the city has the natural beauty of any coastal place, it is very dirty and lacks the infrastructure for proper sewage removal and maintenance. You however can come across great delicacies. For instance, we were able to buy tamales out of people's homes that were just exquisite.

If going to Belize City be cautious but most importantly be open to a new experience.
