Being a morbid individual wasn't quite enough...

by tch7 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jan 14 '04
Pros: Grant Avenue was colourful, cheap, varied, and it didn't display animal cruelty.
Cons: The other streets.
Having visited San Francisco’s Chinatown twice, I have lost all desire to actually visit China. The first time, I had a cold and wasn’t feeling too well, so the sounds, smells, and sights all had twice the effect they normally would have. I’d ...

A West Coast Chinatown

by videodude videodude is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Hotels & Travel, , Apr 27 '05
Pros: Prices, cheap eats and stores
Cons: Appearance, cleanliness, not all souvenirs are created equal, human traffic
I'm of a half breed Chinese, so I have become familiar with Chinese cultures as well as food. Living in Massachusetts, I make the occasional trip to Boston's Chinatown on a Sunday afternoon, for some dim sum, which is quite good. Now, all aside, Boston's ...

Eat and Shop Your Way Through Chinatown

by Dhano923 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Sep 18 '02
Pros: Beautiful shops and restaurants, excellent food
Cons: Can be crowded during special events
When my friend and I were planning out our weekend trip to San Francisco, one of the things we had to do was eat dim sum in Chinatown. Being avid foodies, we wanted to experience the real thing (I've had authentic dim sum in Asia, but she had only...

I DIDN'T leave my heart (or wallet) in Chinatown

by JediKermit Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Feb 01 '01
Pros: Colorful part of town...
Cons: Cheaply made, cheaply sold goods, in cramped stores that are tourist traps
When we were in San Francisco last September, we made a special point to visit Chinatown. We were actually walking ALL OVER San Francisco between Union Square and Pier 39, up and down hills and steep streets, and spent an entire day just exploring this...

A gaudy false replica of China with a sad history

by jules12 , Oct 27 '01
Pros: Can find some cheap eats and cheap souvenirs
Cons: Does not really reflect modern Chinese culture
Being of Chinese descent, I feel compelled to make a stop at Chinatown of every major city I visit (London, Boston, Seattle, New York, etc.) and see how my culture is presented and represented in foreign countries. If you have been to other Chinatowns,...

Visit "Shanghi" No Passport Needed

by goldtc , Feb 15 '02
Pros: Cheap souvenirs, great food, and it's a "real" Chinatown
Cons: Some things are very cheaply made, a lot of signs are in Chinese only.
There's no Chinatown like the Chinatown in San Francisco. If you enjoy a lot of hustle and bustle, Chinese food, and shopping till you drop, then San Francisco's Chinatown is for you.

I just returned from spending a 3-day weekend in San...

What's a 'Dim Sum'?

by japage , Apr 22 '02
Pros: Unique experience.
Cons: None
On a recent visit to the San Francisco Bay area, we did the usual tourist things: Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, cable cars and ....Chinatown.

We parked our car in a garage and rode the Mason-Powell St. cable car to Chinatown. The cable cars...

Chinatown: Worth going?

by enchanter , May 15 '00
Pros: Very localise place
Cons: Quiet..routine....?
If any tourist asks me if Chinatown is a good place to visit...here's what I have to say.

I used to work in Chinatown in one of the conserved shop houses in a multimedia house. One look at Chinatown itself, it appears like any part of...

Ancient China

by fongfong , Aug 16 '01
Pros: glimpse of Chinese heritage/culture, great food, friendly people, great Chinese architectures and buildings
Cons: litered streets, some-what dirty, walking, to many places to visit all in one day.
Because of my Chinese culture, I periodically visit the Los Angeles ChinaTown quite often and have also visited ChinaTown in San Francisco a year back. So what do I think of Chinatown in my perspective, considering I am Chinese? I Love it!

Uncle Resturant

by cisco_rau , Jan 09 '01
Pros: Good authentic Chinese food
Cons: Need to know about it
Both times I've visited San Francisco, I've taken one evening and wondered around Chinatown looking in all the shops and trying to find a great place to eat. Last night, I had one heck of a meal!

I managed to venture off of Grant St. and...

Mostly overrated

by jckearns101 , Sep 08 '07
Pros: Cheap souvenirs, eats
Cons: Confusing, no central destination
Almost all the guidebooks call Chinatown a must visit while you're in San Francisco, I however, don't particularly like the place. The first thing to note is that there is no central destination, when you go to Chinatown, you're actually going to an ...

Things I learned in Chinatown

by killerqwe , Dec 06 '00
Pros: great eating and shopping
Cons: no matter how good of deal you think you got it will be cheaper at the next store
Rule number one is to drive a hard bargain in souvenir shops and to check several different stores before you buy anything for example I saw the same post cards any where from 25 cents each to 15 for a dollar. I paid $3.95 for a coffee mug only to find...
