Eastside Cafe -- What a restaurant SHOULD be!

by pmckay , Apr 12 '00
Pros: fresh veggies, wonderful atmosphere, amazing food
Cons: none at all!
What a cool, novel idea. Open a restaurant and grow your own vegetables and herbs in the backyard. Well, over a decade ago, two friends came up with that idea, and the Eastside Cafe was born. They found a house on Manor Road, converted it into a cozy,...

Best Mex-mex I've ever eaten

by stract , Mar 31 '00
Pros: excellent food, excellent service, great atmosphere
Cons: wait can be long if you don't show up early.
no, that was not a typo. This food is not tex-mex. And it's the best I've ever eaten. My family goes here every chance they get, and a claim to fame (if you want to call it that) is Clinton ate here once (I don't order what he ordered).

Eat Like a Mexican Aristocrat at Fonda San Miguel

by AshleyA , Apr 23 '00
Pros: delicious authentic Mexican food, excellent service, nice atmosphere
Cons: somewhat spicy food, buffet price may be hard to swallow, not an ideal restaurant for children
For those who were wondering, there is a distinct difference between authentic Mexican food and Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is Mexican food that has been "Texanized", and some of the dishes never even originated in Mexico (take the burrito, for example)....

Thundercloud Subs

by stract , May 11 '00
Pros: they are everywhere in Austin
Cons: they are only in Austin
"Thundercloud Subs...thun-der-cloud! Fresh, fast and healthy!....thun-der-cloud.."

Anyone from Austin has heard this song on the radio about a million times already. I could sing it in my sleep if I wanted to. It's almost like the...

My favorite Austin restaurants: from ribs to gumbo ...

by CoolGobi , Jul 27 '00
Pros: Great food, awesome ambiance
Cons: None I can think of
I lived in Austin for five years, before moving to the Bay Area. Now, the Bay Area is not exactly short of restaurants ... in fact, San Francisco ranks among the top five cities in the world for its food, according to food critics, and who am I to argue...

Breakfast in Austin

by buggirl , Jun 02 '00
Pros: Austin has lots of great places to eat breakfast
Cons: if you don't live in Austin, it could be a long trip for such good food!
Nothing compares to Austin when it comes to finding good places for breakfast. Because Austin is a town that doesn’t sleep until late and get up until even later, breakfast is served all the time, night and day. One of the things I’ve missed the most...

Stubb's Bar-B-Q: eat the great BBQ, don't go downstairs.

by gimplimp , Feb 03 '00
Pros: The great Bar-B-Q
Cons: The larger than life nude hanging on the wall in the basement.
Stubb's Bar-B-Q served the best Bar-B-Q I had while in Austin for a week August 1999. Their menu describes their brisket plate like this: " Beef Brisket $5.95 Texas made it famous and Stubb's made it heavenly. Beautiful Texas black angus beef...

Kim Phung: Cheap but Bland Vietnamese Food

by MTB0001 , Oct 11 '00
Pros: Cheap food, fast service, free fortune cookies
Cons: Lack of ambiance, bland food
Review Topic:  Restaurants

I visit Kim Phung about once a month, and I always order the same thing: vermicelli with garlic, tofu, and lemongrass. This comes in a huge bowl with lettuce on the bottom, vermicelli in the middle, and...

"Castle Hill Cafe": Creative cooking, reasonable prices

by CoolGobi , Jun 22 '00
Pros: Exciting food, great appetizers
Cons: Very dim lighting, heavy food
There are a lot of cool things in Austin: for one, it is easily the most liberal city in Texas, and the other is its creativity. This is the city where traditional barbeque and good old southwestern cooking has evolved into adventurous and eclectic...

Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Food, all top notch

The Oasis: Leaving right before sunset?

by plares , Jul 21 '00
Pros: spectacular view
Cons: overpriced food
My girlfriend and I were at The Oasis as we were passing through the Austin area on a Saturday in January 1999. I didn't think we'd get to the restaurant before sunset, but my lead foot got us there 20 minutes before sunset. Although it was January, it...

Texas Hill Country Open-Pit Bar-be-que: The Real Thang

by reality_check , May 17 '00
Pros: Great Hill Country setting, relaxed atmosphere, stellar bar-be-que, inexpensive, loads of character & history
Cons: Lackluster side dishes, hard to find
Where’s the best bar-be-que in Austin? According to the May 2000 Austin Chronicle, it’s the Salt Lick. The Chronicle also says the Salt Lick is the Best Place to Take Your Parents, and the Best Restaurant Within 60 Miles of Austin, too. The ‘Lick has...
