Different from the rest of Texas!

by dlantz , Oct 22 '04
Pros: Interesting people and different. Good German food.
Cons: Too hot in summer time and some parts are becoming too commercial.
The Texas Hill country is unlike any other part of Texas. It has rolling hills, fall foliage and is a tourist trap. But then again, it is worth a drive over from Austin or San Antonio. The two main cities are Fredericksburg and Kerrville. This area was ...

Some Ghosts Smell Like Dill: Grandpa And The Rivers His Spirit Haunts (Father's Day W/O)

by AggieBrett , Jun 16 '01
Pros: Floating down a Hill Country river remains almost as perfect as I remember
Cons: Civilization and commercial development continue to advance and intrude like a weed
The rivers of the Texas Hill Country haunt me.

They haunt me with the sounds of a man I barely had a chance to truly know, and by the scents of days I can never forget. When I'm on a Hill Country river, the memories flow as thick and fast as...

by shanna Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Nov 10 '01
Pros: Friendly people, beautiful drives, great food.
Cons: Too much to see and do if you don't plan ahead.
The Texas Hill Country is simply one of the most beautiful places in Texas. The hill country is comprised of several small towns that are great for antique shopping, museum visits, and plenty of recreational activities. Texas is so large that it's...

Neal's Lodges - Hill Country Retreat

by counsel Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Nov 02 '99
Pros: Quiet repose, beautiful riverside setting
Cons: May be a bit too old and rustic for some
For a person who grew up in these rugged hills it's hard to describe their appeal. It's especially hard to describe it to someone who's been to the Rockies, the Sierras or the Pacific Northwest, where the forests are more lush, the mountains bigger and...

Some Of My Best Memories

by kurbs Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 03 '05
Pros: Hills, rivers, trees, so much to see and experience.
Cons: Shake your boots to check for scorpions.
Having married long ago into a very old Texas family who hailed from the Hill Country, I eventually lived there for a while after being discharged from the military. The Hill Country is located in central Texas which spans from San Antonio westward, ...

Romantic long weekends are one of life's many wonderful gifts. A special someone, a cool fall evening, a gourmet dinner, a bottle of wine, a bit of wrestling under a warm quilt in a cozy room in an historic bed and breakfast, a long soak in a burbling ...

“Oom Pah Pah” in the Texas Hill Country

by colleenmf Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jun 07 '01
Pros: Historic town with lots of German influence.
Cons: The stores close so early.
On a recent trip to San Antonio, my husband and I decided to spend a weekend in Fredericksburg, Texas. We knew that there would be good German restaurants and plenty of antique stores but we really didn’t know if we’d find enough to do for a whole...

BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN S.A.

by armadillo55 , Jun 23 '00
Pros: Good food - great prices with a unique cultural experience with excellent value
Cons: none
Living in the hill country of Texas we enjoy the best of both world's. Whenever the quiet scenery around us starts being taken for granted we can load up the car and head into the live music capitol of the world in Austin or cruise straight down IH-10...

A Hidden Treasure in the Texas Hill Country

by saprswife , Feb 22 '00
Pros: Amazing formations, well-designed tours
Cons: On a rare occasion some rooms may be flooded
One of the most awe-inspiring treasures nestled in the Texas Hill Country is not easily visible. You see, it lies beneath the rolling hills, live oaks, brush, and wildflowers that dominate this rustic area. It is catacomb of caverns that contains what...

WILDFLOWER HEAVEN IN THE HILL COUNTRY

by mike.holmes Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Mar 26 '01
Pros: Gorgeous scenery, great barbecue and friendly folks
Cons: A little hot in the summer
I live in a semi-desert known as West Texas. At times, even a semi-desert can be beautiful. You just have to look a little harder for the beauty. The scenery is improved
after our rare rains. That is when our wildflowers bloom and the cactus...

The Texas Hill Country It's Like A Whole Other Country!

by tchoate Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jun 17 '01
Pros: Beautiful scenery, abundant wildlife, clear sparkling rivers
Cons: The Heat!
Watching the newest commercials for the State of Texas Visitors Bureau has made me think about how true this one commercial is; it refers to Texas as “like having a whole country in one State.” I have traveled this great state and have come to realize...

The Salt Lick BBQ

by counsel Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Nov 11 '99
Pros: Great food, perfect setting - a Hill Country Institution
Cons: Hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. Crowded.
I need to tell you this up front - I was Salt-Lickin' before the Salt Lick was cool. Twenty-four years ago, me and my college buddies would head west from Austin to Driftwood - then down Farmer's Market Road 1826. After twisting and turning down this...

Things to do in San Marcos, Texas

by cindycycle , Jun 02 '00
Pros: beautiful river and vital downtown square
Cons: hot in summer, lots of traffic at certain times due to college students
San Marcos, Texas, is a great place to get it away from it all and relax. I have lived in San Marcos over five years now, so here's my biased opinion about what I like to see and do in town: (1) San Marcos River -- a crystal-clear, spring-fed river...

Lots to do near Fredericksburg

by gurdonark , Feb 01 '02
Pros: Lots to do with great scenery and great restaurants
Cons: This is not an urban area at all.
The Texas hill country features many aspects not familiar to most of Texas. The rolling hills, abundant prickly pear cactus, and smallish trees make for a beautiful and somewhat unusual landscape. The whole place makes for wonderful driving tours...
