Pros: cross-country, skiing, public indoor swimming pool, great nature all year
Cons: cold during the winter (0 -> -30 C night), can be expensive, in the "wilderness"
My family and I have had much fun doing winter sports and walking in the mountain terrain in and close to Rauland. We have enjoyed the place as tourists for several years with our caravan as "headquarter". As the village is located 700 metres above sea level, the winter time here is always rich on snow. The snow is at its best between January and March. With lots of ski tracks for both cross-country and slalom/downhill, most people should find Rauland a great place to spend their winter holidays. Rauland is a typical Norwegian "on-the-country"-village with lots of space and very few, but also very nice, people. International tourists should however be prepared to travel between 4 and 7 hours by train and/or bus to get there. Either Kristiansand or Oslo is a good choice to arrive Norway by plane.
