Pros: Great views, the off-trail terrain, and a good road up Cons: Big queues, tired facilities, inefficient lift system, poor weather
Of the two commercial fields on the North Island's Mt. Ruapehu, this is the one I prefer. There is plenty going for Whakapapa but also a number of drawbacks that you can avoid elsewhere. In the end my advice is to head to the South Island fields. ...

Pros: Great range and variety of slopes accommodating skiers of all skill levels. Cons: Seasons can sometimes be short.
If you're planning on holidaying in North Island of New Zealand during the Winter, then skiing Whakapapa is a great idea. The season, although obviously subject to weather variation, usually starts towards the end of June and runs up until early November...

Pros: where else can you go? Cons: Crowds, shitty seasons
Whakapapa is the north islands premier ski resort, Its right in the middle of three resorts and the biggest of the 3. It main advantage is the range of different slopes and runs, it also has more chair lifts than the others.
