Pros: Great service esp with Avis Preferred Cons: More expensive than than 2nd tier companies (but cheaper than Hertz)
I have rented from Avis dozens of times and only had a problem once. On that particular rental the customer svc guy gave me a free upgrade from midsize to luxury (3 classes up).
Preferred service is great - far better than Hertz's Club Gold....

Pros: Shuttle service was prompt.

Unclear on the Concept

Pros: willing to make a reservation for you Cons: neglect to tell you that the reservation doesn't actually include a car
Maybe I assume that people are more sophisticated than they generally are, but when I called Avis, and made a reservation, I failed to specify that I wanted the kind of reservation where I actually get a car. As a result, when I went to the lot to claim my "reserved" vehicle, they told me they didn't have any cars. My advice to anyone wanting to rent a car from Avis: make sure that when you make a reservation, you indicate that it's the kind where they give you a car, not the kind where you reserve the right not to receive one.

I would do a commercial for Avis. Every time I have rented (over 25), the cars have been great, the service superb. Only once did I have a flat tire - between major cities. They offered to drive and meet me to change it themselves, or I could change and get a new car at the next location about 40 miles ahead, which I did. When I arrived at the small location, the car was clean, gassed and I drove away in a few minutes. I will never rent from another agency. I am now a preferred customer and the car is running with a newspaper in the seat and ready to go by the time the airport shuttle drops me off.
