Pros: Hertz customer service was great with resolving problems. 
Cons: Had a malfunction with the security system on our vehicle. 

On the third day of our vacation, our rental vehicle had a malfuntion with the security system.  The car wouldn't start and the engine shut down.  Hertz customer service tried resolving the problem over the phone, sent an emergency vehicle to assist.  After that didn't work they sent a cab to pick us up and go to the airport for a new vehicle, as it was after hours and all the other offices were closed.  We got a new vehicle and had the cab fare reimbursed within a short time. 

The biggest PRO was after I realized I left my cell phone in the 2nd rental car.  The lost & found customer service agent found the vehicle, put a hold on it, had it searched and found my phone!  I was so relieved.  They also overnighted my phone back to me without a fee.  In spite of fluke with the security feature malfuntion, I would definitely rent from Hertz again.  I thought my phone and MP3 player loaded with awesome music was a gonner.  Not so, thanks to Hertz and honest employees. 

Pros: Only one thing, I used less gas with this car .
Cons: The car smelled like someone had been overdosing on Brut men's cologne. 

I rented a mid-size car from Hertz last Thursday through Sunday morning for about $400.  The counter clerk assigned me a Toyota Corolla which is well know to be classified as an economy car.  When I questioned her, she stated that the Corolla is a mid-size car! 
Not only was I reeling from the cost of a $400 for a 2 day 9 hour rental but felt that they cheated me out of a mid-size.

Good bye Hertz, no more will I rent your cars and I intend to tell everyone I know about your rip-off scheme.

Pros: Better customer service than most.  Hertz #1, Avis just tries harder ;-)
Cons: Unexpected early return penalty.

I have had similar early return stories with Hertz.  This happened to me in Denver, Dallas, and Cleveland.  I was able to get the charges straightened out, but they changed the rental rate.  It seems that if you book say 3 days, you get a certain rate.  If you return early they either charge a penalty, or you have to complain which leads to no penalty but a higher rate.

I have seen this with Thrifty as well.

rented a suv for the weekend, asked about dropping it off at closer location and was told that we could without any extra charges, dropped it off at the location notice they were not open on sunday so I call the airport office and was told it was still ok. just put the keys in the drop.
everything worked out great, untill tuesday when I check on my credit card, instead of getting a 378.00 bill Hertz charged me 948.00. not only did they gouge me for an extra day the charged me double...now they will not call me back... guess I will have to dipute this with my credit card....

Pros: nice car, but didn't need the upgrade Hotwire has far better customer service
Cons: rip off artists won't return phone calls to customer service

I rented a car with Hertz through Hotwire this past July. I paid all fees through Hotwire, aside from their July promotion to fill up the gas at market rate instead of the usual inflated rental rate.

Arriving at the Hertz pickup at DFW, the agent went through significant song and dance to get me to upgrade. I consistently refused the upgrade. At the end, the agent said I was eligible for a free upgrade, which would show as an upgrade on the receipt, but which would be credited when I turned the car in. I foolishly signed (I hadn't slept much and I hardly ever rent a car).

Naturally, I now have $70 for an upgrade I didn't want or need that Hertz won't credit. I also have an additional charge for an Airport Concession Fee that I paid through Hotwire that they won't credit either.

Pros: Their global business helps in providing better customer relations in many countries.
Cons: Sometimes, they charge much more then shown on the Internet.

I tried Hertz two times and found the service satisfactory.
While booking, staff was very polite n the driver of Bus helped me to get down my luggage. Their on line site is very attractive to the public.
Charges are nominal. but, they don't have discounts in the season. n if they do, they usually give discounts in next purchase. I always get the Vehicle in good condition, so no complaints about the vehicle.
They have good deals if you take it as a package among the stay n flight.
I undoubtedly, go with it next time, unless got another good deal.

We booked a Hertz car via AutoEurope in Rome and paid in advance. When we went to pick it up in Termini Station, a rude big guy started yelling at us to produce our plane tickets because people from Eastern Europe are stealing cars. We looked as a normal couple with normal clothes and faces, I am pregnant and we had to listen to this hysterical guy. We only had electronic air tickets and he did not accept it. Please note that the rule to show tickets is not known to clients because they do not make it public. AutoEurope did not know about it, too. We had to call police but it could not help us. So, we were left without money, without a car on Sunday morning thanks to wonderful Hertz International Policy and its reluctance to solve issues. The rude guy even refused to call his manager because he said it was Sunday. We still did not get our money back because Hertz did not manage for over a month to confirm to AutoEurope that the car was not given to us. Lousy service, rude employee.

Cons: No changes allowed, no flexibility

My brother, who never travels, rented a Hertz vehicle on Hotwire.com. The issue was the disclaimer that said no changes. So to be accurate, there are absolutely no changes allowed on the reservation. NO time, date, type of car, names, credit card, or anything else.

I called Hotwire, spoke to Jordan, who was condescending about making the reservation, and called Hertz who would not provide any leeway either.

So caveat emptor, if you're not 1000% sure, don't rent on Hotwire.

Cons: Desk Agents push for upgrades and add-on charges at pickup desk, some staff is unfriendly

I was overall satisfied with Hertz, especially with the superb vehicle. I recieved a brand new Saturn sedan that was in peak condition, very impressive, all their vehicles seem to be in peak condition. The desk staff was pushy with upgrades and add-on insurance charges, it took several minutes to convince the desk agent that all I wanted was the basic rental I had reserved and no upgrades or extra charges. The pickup was a breeze, the vehicle was parked and ready to drive just steps away from the car rental desk. Their facilities are also very clean and modern just like their vehicles, very efficient and easy to use. Return was also a breeze, lots of signage in the large facility and staff that direct you to a parking spot and briefly inspect the vehicle.

Pros: Good cars, good service
Cons: pricey

I rented from Hertz a couple of times. Their prices are high, but often competitive with the AAA discount. I was pleased on both occassion, being offered the ability to choose among cars at LAX. Then, in Chicago I had called in and said I had a coupon for an upgrade. At the rental time, I forgot the coupon, but they honored it anyway. A full size vehicle for $20/day on weekend special. Outstanding. Service was polite and professional at all times. I recommend the highly, especially with a discount.

Pros: Ultra-fast return
Cons: Did not honor promised rate; neighboring gas station's price gouging.

I rented through Hertz for 5 days through Oct. 4, 2006 at the Orlando International Airport north location. Shuttle service to the facility was swift and professional, though the line at Hertz was long, and this was about 1 a.m. on a Friday night. Furthermore, the agent failed to provide me with the promised rate and, after much bickering agreed to rent to me for about $5 more than agreed. And all this despite the fact I provided him my confirmation number. He berated me for not knowing my specific "promotion name," and that the confirmation number was meaningless. Hertz did upgrade to a small SUV from economy sedan, because of availability (this was not important to me.)
***AND DO BEWARE of filling up at the adjacent Lee Vista Chevron gas station, which charged $3.60 per gallon, when the prevailing rate was about $2.30. Should have known better, but as we were hard-pressed for time, had to bite the bullet. That was the worst I have seen, ever, for a station near car rental returns.

I work for National/Alamo/Guy Salmon car rental so i went ahead to book a Mercedes E-class on staff rate(£210) for the weekend. Next day my sixth sense suddenly aurged me to find out rates for same model elsewhere. Only then i found out that Hertz's rate for the same time was £165, which ofcourse made me cancel my staff rate booking with National/Alamo/Guy Salmon and book with Hertz.

I called Hertz twice to find if the rate was really true. The service i received from their reservation dept was outstanding compared to National/Alamo/Guy Salmon.

I would recommed Hertz compared to National/Alamo/Guy Salmon.

Avoid using National/Alamo due to their poor service level. Avis for being really expensive.

I recently booked a car with Hertz via Opodo's website. Payment was taken from my debit card. However, when I turned up to collect the car, I was asked to show the *credit* card I'd booked with, and since I don't have (or need) a credit card, Hertz refused to rent me the car. I had to make expensive last-minute arrangements for the family to reach the airport -- and nearly had to cancel the holiday altogether. I'm in the process of claiming, of course, and we'll see how well Hertz handle that (I'll report back here). In the meantime, anyone making web bookings should beware that you could end up getting left stranded as I was.

As a gold members who regularly rents from Hertz on business, I would have imagined that they would stand up for me when a Hertz franchisee in Canada (Hurontario Novotel Hotel, Mississauga, ON) screwed me.

The rental agent gave me an unwashed car and did not bother to do a walk-around (my mistake too since I should have insisted on it). While returning, it was raining but still he insisted on walking around. He then pointed at some ‘scratch’ on the car’s door. When I mentioned the fact that I could not see it, he insisted on its existence and said that I would have to bend and see at an angle. I took the car back home, took a digital photo before returning it.

Later when I saw my credit card bill, there was a charge of $200 from Hertz!

I wrote to them and to my credit card company. Hertz corporate customer service said that they couldn’t help because I had to deal with the franchisee!

Can anyone help ?! Could I take them to small-claims court?!

Pros: Pros? There are pros with this company?
Cons: Disgraceful customer "service."

Renting from Hertz was a long, laborious task. The day after I returned the car they "found" some damage to the bumper...hmmmn, no one noticed at the time of return. When I protested I went through 4 or 5 different people on the phone, was told to call back, left messages that were never returned, and then they slapped another $450 on my credit card. It is several months later and this situation is still outstanding.
