Hertz rental experience
by saddith ,Apr 28 '04
Pros: shuttle buses and check in Cons: additional driver fee, older beat up cars, unfriendly staff, high prices
We got Hertz through Expedia.com in a package deal. I had never dealt with Hertz - and was surprised by the lack of customer service. The rental agent at the desk was very unfriendly, and had no sense of humor whatsoever. The car was OK, but had scratches and dents all over it as well as 18K on the odometer. We were told it costs $7 extra dollars a day for an additional driver - spouses included. So I ended up doing all the driving, which was a pain. We also got smacked with additional taxes not included in the package... but that really isn't hertz's fault.
The airport shuttle buses were fast and efficient, as well as the check in procedure.

just got $124 for gas on a full tank return
by dougnaka ,Apr 03 '04
Pros: was a good deal through hotwire.com
fast, friendly support Cons: trying to scam me out of money,
closed on Saturday for support
My experience with Hertz wasn't bad, until I got my receipt. We went on a family vacation, everything was normal, nice car, good service. We had an early flight (6am departure) and dropped the keys and form into a drop slot at the Hertz counter, nobody was in yet. Today I received a letter from Hertz telling me they charged my card $124 for gas. We rented a SUV through Hotwire, and got a great deal. It was a Ford Explorer and I Think the gas tank was about 22 gallons, which is what I get if I divide the $124 charged by the $5.49/gallon price on the receipt. I called them today to dispute this claim, since we had just filled up the car about 10 miles from the Airport, but their office is closed on Saturdays apparently.
Updated 4/5/04 I just called Hertz and the very helpful customer service associate credited my card back without a fuss, and even apologized, as in said "I'm sorry". This is a bonus, but I'm highly suspicious that they did it in the first place.

Hertz failed badly
by rad_p ,Feb 10 '04
Pros: Renting online through the Ryanair web site.
Ryanair discount - at least in theory. Cons: Poor, poor customer service.
No car available at destination.
After booking a flight with Ryanair I proceeded to rent a car through their web site with Hertz. The reservation went without incident until I decided that I needed a larger car.
The first problem was that I was not able to change my reservation online.
Second, after searching for almost 1/2 an hour, I could not find a customer service telephone number that didn't charge like a 1-900 number.
Third, after finally reaching a customer service rep. I thought I had the reservation fixed. I was told that I would have to make a new reservation and that the first one would be refunded. This is the problem - Hertz never refunded the original reservation. I have tried numerous times with various different customer service numbers to no avail. This has been an ongoing ordeal since I took the trip in October.
And lastly (and here's the kicker), Hertz did not have a car for me when I arrived at my destination. NOTHING! I ended up renting from Avis.

Better than the Rest
by sweetlips10027 ,Jan 20 '04
Pros: Great cars Cons: Expensive then the rest
I first rented with Hertz a few weeks ago. I currently commute to and from Upstate New York to see my fiance. It is a 4 hr. drive and I do not own a car as of yet. I was using enterprise but was dissatisfied with the non-consistency of the rate. Hertz does cost more, but I received a great car with cd player and all and unlimited miles which is what I needed. I believe in paying for the good stuff and not settling for cheaper quality.

The whole company is run by monkeys
by gxcebot ,Nov 06 '03
Pros: Nothing compared to other rental companies Cons: Customers become victims
I rented a car from Hertz in a southwestern town -- going there solely for business purposes. I purchased insurance since I didn't have personal insurance at the time. My co-worker dented the fender. Hertz refused to cover the claim because someone else was driving. They said they WOULD HAVE if I had just told them the rental was for business purposes. The fact that I told them this afterward didn't seem to matter to them -- It's just one of those messy *legal* facts they'd rather ignore.
Anyway, I've gotten letters from lawyers and collection agencies about every 6 months for the past 5 years. They have refused to go after my former employer (who's really the responsible party, since I and the driver were operating within the scope of the job).
Change 2 letters and the name will fit better: JERKZ!

BEWARE! THEY MAY RIP YOU
by angryathertz ,Nov 01 '03
Pros: easy to pay online Cons: if things don't go right, don't expect anything
I prepaid a rental on the net with this bunch of corporate gangsters
When i arrived to pick the car up with my wife and three children they refused me a car as i did not have a credit card, in fact we do not have a credit card only a debit card which i used to pay online with.
After reading the small print , it says they do not accept debit cards.....well why did they take my money?
After asking for a refund i received a e-mail bluntly stating.... on this occasion no refund is due.
Well so much for customer care, what a joke

Hang on to those gas receipts
by mbstone ,Oct 28 '03
Pros: Good rates, especially through Priceline Cons: They try to steal money from you
For the second time in a row, Hertz has sent me an invoice for an entire tank of gas, and then some, at $5.59/gal for a total of $86 (more gas than the tank on the car holds!) The last time they did this, just 2 weeks ago, they were very nice and refunded the charge when I emailed them a scan of my fuel receipt. Now I will have to go through the hassle of gathering receipts again. I assume many people don't bother to contest the overcharges 'cause it is too much hassle or they are charging to a company that won't care. I like Hertz cars, employees, and rates, but the theft is getting a little over the top.

Beware of certain local edition offices!
by epinioz ,Oct 23 '03
Pros: They rent cars Cons: Incompetent and Disinterested staff, Unauthorized charges to credit card
Recently we rented a car from Hertz Local Edition 4404 West Plano Parkway, Plano, TX, at Middlekauff Ford while ours was in the body-shop.
The staff was extremely unprofessional, unhelpful, and overall the experience dealing with them was terrible.
Instead of working with an insurance company to receive payment for the bill they just charged my card. They wanted the card for a $50 deposit only. We returned the car with a bill showing that due amount was $0. However a month later our card was charged. No one at Hertz responded to complaints. I called the local office, customer service, and sent complaints on-line. No response.
That was my last rental from Hertz.

Very Nice Service & Helpful staff
by rajexport ,Oct 14 '03
Pros: Our driver was good English speaking and very polite. Cons: while renting car in India, with Hertz I find it more reliable.
Last month I had visited few cities of India. India is still not perfectly developed, for local transportation, you had to hire cheap rickshaws (three wheeler) or old Black & yellow dirty cars. At one city name Vadodara, i found Hertz rental at Airport. I was welcomed by some polite gentlemen at Counter and asked about my requirements. I was really surprised by way they supplied car with driver at such a lowest rates. In India you should avoid self drive car, as Indian Roads are having both in & out traffic on same single strip of road at maximum speed.
