It works great for me
by susky ,Nov 03 '03
Pros: Easy to follow, overall better health Cons: I do miss some foods, but I'm happy with the tradeoff
You can't think of this as the "diet" as it it portrayed in the media. This truly is a "way of eating"...for life. It is NOT unhealthy - on the contrary! I've been on Atkins for more than 9 months, and even through a summer of maintenance (the lifetime phase of Atkins), I've still lost over 70 pounds. Plus no more acid reflux. No more sleep apnea. And I haven't gotten so much as a cold since I started. I can't say enough about this plan. It's easy to stick with, and when you do it right, it does what it promises.

Diet Prayers Not Answered By Atkins
by jadejaguar ,Apr 05 '05
Pros: Initial speedy weight loss Cons: Body usually reacts to loss of 'good' carbs.
I'm significantly overweight and have other health issues besides, so this seemed to be just the thing: cut the carbs. I started the Atkins diet nearly 2 years ago (2003). Initially it seemed to be the answer to my diet prayers, allowing me to lose nearly 20 pounds over a two month period. But alas, it didn't last long and seemed to go the way of all the other diets I've tried. I still try to adhere to it, but once my body is too depleted of necessary carbs, it starts rebelling.
I bought into the Atkins craze because I've tried everything to lose weight and nothing seemed to work. I thought if I tailored my food intake to a more natural way of eating that this would be the answer. Unfortunately, I plateaued after about two months...and that was more than a year and a half ago.
Cutting carbs really doesn't appear the be the answer for many. Even those who don't seem to benefit from all 'the other' diets, from what I've read and from what I've heard from friends who have also tried the diet, not many benefit from it on a long term basis.

Atkins Diet works better with Whole Natural Foods
by holistic_cure ,Dec 29 '04
Pros: The diet works as long as you stay on it. Cons: Biggest problem is the constipation
I lost 10 pounds on the Atkins Diet, eating lots of eggs, cheese and meat. But noticed it only took a weekend to put some of the weight back on. I've tried every diet, every weight loss pill, exercising as much as five times a week. Whatever I lost, I put back on. When I was losing weight I was hungry, tired, and grumpy. I never understood what the problem was; not until I found that the answer was to eat all natural organic raw foods which I found at this website: http://proctor.wholefoodfarmacy.com/ Also stay away from Diet sodas, they have been called the new crack because they appear to be so physically addicting. They actually make you fat. The reason they are promoted so heavily is because people become physically addicted to them and they are cheaper to make than regular sodas.

Another fad.
by likalaruku ,Feb 13 '04
Pros: It's the perfect plan for those with 'exceptional' metabolisms. Cons: For every repetitive pro, there are 5 or more cons.
This pricey, unhealthy, extremely monotonous diet is a fad. People who want to be popular use it among others, & most don't even exercise when they're on it. I may be fast acting in the long run, but it only works 'completely' for less than 50% of it's users.
Eating that much meat is even more unhealthy than being a vegetarian (& they have to eat constantly). Also, I've noticed that people who kick the diet tend to go on bred & pastry binges, gaining back up to 3 times the weight. & if that & the hundred some-odd health problems associated by other users doesn't scare you, your grocery bills will.
The pro's are "now-based" & mediocre while the cons will make you regret trying this latter & fill your mind with hypochondria.

Don't do it
by sallyrv ,Sep 25 '05
Pros: Weight loss Cons: Many health risks
I did this diet and did lose some weight, but I had to pay a price. I wanted to lose weight but I didn't think about the long term effects.
I don't know all about the medical risks, I'm just writing about what I've seen.
The weight gain after stopping the Atkins diet is shocking. Your body has gotten used to so little carbs that when you do eat them, you gain twice the weight you would normally gain.
I know a girl who gained 20 pounds over stopping the diet which is 10 more pounds she was before she started it.
The diet is also very hard on the kidneys. Alot of people developed kidney stones, fortunately, I stopped the diet before that could happen.
A person could stay on this diet forever to avoid the huge weight gain when stopping the diet, but there are so many risks that go with it that I can certainly say that the diet is not worth begining in the first place.

From a Size 12/14 to a Size 2, and Loving it!
by idahotiger ,Jun 27 '06
Pros: Lost a ton of weight and was rarely ever hungry Cons: Ignorant people telling you the diet doesn't work or you can't keep the weight off.
My cousin turned me on to Atkins. She insisted I read the book and not listen to the rumors and half-truths that ABOUND regarding this plan. This is not a "butter and meat" diet! It's a high protein, low carbohydrate diet, and those who simply do not READ THE BOOK are bound to mess up.
I lost about 50 pounds, two years ago. I am now wearing size 2 jeans, and have never felt better in my entire life. Cutting out sugar was the only part of this plan that was difficult for me, but once I did it, WOW! I never realized how BAD sugar makes me feel--the false high, the crashing afterward. I don't miss anything I cut out at all.
YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK before you plunge in. I've met people who were putting away a pound of bacon every day and didn't understand why it wasn't working. I eat a lot more chicken and fish than I do meat for my protein, and a lot of cheese. I have more energy, and a chronic stomach problem I had suffered with for years is 100% GONE.
All hail Atkins!

awesome way of eating
by chrissymilf ,Sep 28 '07
Pros: no hunger, healthy, easy to stick to, feel great Cons: most people against it but don't understand what it is high media ignorance factor
Atkins works and it is safe sane and healthy. If you follow the plan through the steps you will be eating meat, eggs, dairy, veggies and yes even fruit and losing slowly and steadily. I have lost 75 lbs and kept it off for 3 years now on atkins and I love it. There is so very much misinformation about this way of eating and the media does not understand it is not eating bacon and butter 3 meals a day.

Atkins Diet Unhealthy and Constantly hungry
by bengy ,May 27 '07
Pros: easy to prepare. Cons: Simply didn't work for me.
I was on the Atkins diet for a little over a week and the diet consisted of all protein and no carbohydrates and I always felt hungry. It seemed like the more I ate the more I wanted to eat. Also, I noticed that my digestion and eliminations were abnormal and I was constipated. I think that the high protein and no carbohydrate diet is unhealthy and I eventually stopped the diet.

bad diet, just EAT RIGHT!
by phartknocker ,Sep 12 '07
Pros: you'll lose weight, temporary loss. Cons: bad for the heart
this is a sicky diet. (most are) it's not balanced, like most diets.
a balanced lifestyle of eating is the only way to go.
this diet is not healthy on the circulatory system.. it's hard on the heart also.
plus if you stick with it for long periods of time it's very possible to develop issues with the digestive system. blockages are highly suseptable with this fiber poor diet.
cholesterol is also a serious issue with this plan.

Not for everyone
by tiggerspounce ,May 31 '04
Pros: If you love bacon this is could be the diet for you.
Cons: If you are carb dependent as I am, then this is not for you.
After giving this 3 different tries over a period of 3 months I cannot seem to get past day 4 before I start to feel ill. Very sick to stomach, bad headaches, blood sugar problems. Some people may not have these problems but it seemed to be the case for me. I joined a gym and am getting better results but IT IS NOT EASY! I go 3-4 times a week and work my butt off for 1 full hour. The first few days on Atkins seem to go well as far as weight loss but if you ask me it's all water you are losing at that point.
