Not a permanent solution
by northeastgal Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500,Dec 19 '06
Pros: none
Cons: weight comes back on within one year
My husband was on this program two times. He's always had a weight problem. He followed the diet faithfully. Yes, he lost the weight both times went out and bought a new wardrobe and put it back on slowly. It is only a temporary weight loss. I would not taste the food. It just didn't appeal to me.

You lose weight because the foods are prepared with consideration for calories and needed vitamins.

I've had to watch him go on this diet against my wishes and prepare the foods. It's convenient and healthy but it will not teach you to eat properly. Therefore, all the weight will come back on once you go off the diet if you go back to eating regular food.

You can't eat out and expect to stay in control of counting calories and you can't stay on NutriSystem forever. Their food is way too expensive.

My suggestion, WeightWatchers counting points for foods available everywhere or/and change something in your lifestyle to help with weight loss. Most restaurants will help dieters with the points.

Staying at an ideal weight will always be difficult for some no matter what weight loss program is tried.

It Worked Wonderfully For Me!!
by jess25 ,Jul 26 '04
Pros: It works!! Very easy to follow and leaves you satisfied. Food was really good.
Cons: Cost-BUT it's worth it if other plans have failed!!
After having my second baby my weight had jumped to nearly 200lbs. I had always been around 130lbs, so this weight gain was very depressing to say the least. I battled with the pounds for over a year. Then I saw the NutriSystem plan on QVC and gave it a try. It was a life saver!! I really liked the food, and it was so easy!! I didn't really have a hard time with feeding everyone else in my family either....I was totally satisfied with the meal plan NutriSystem provided for myself so I didn't crave anything else (and I didn't munch on my kids leftovers either!!) I've tried other weight loss plans -including the latest low carb fad....which I know works for a lot of people, but it didn't for me. NutriSystem is balanced and lets you enjoy losing weight. I lost 13lbs in the first month...and the weight has continued to come off. I feel so good about myself again....It really really works!!

Not for Long-Term Dieters...
by redstarr1 ,Oct 03 '04
Pros: Easy, convenient, with some variety.
Cons: Expensive, of questionable quality, sugar substitutes.
I am about 30 pounds overweight, mainly because I love to eat. I saw one of the commercials for Nutrisystem, and decided to give it a try. I was very excited to get the package in the mail...until I started eating the food. I thought the cereal was delicious, and I enjoyed the breakfast bars. The lunches and dinners, however, were not the best. I liked the pasta dishes, but anything that had a lot of meat was pretty gross. I decided the next month to only order what I had liked and tried. So I got bored with the food.

I also had problems with the desserts because of the Maltitol. It made me very sick, and I've never enjoyed sugar substitutes anyway.

Bottom Line: I lost 10 pounds, but have not ordered the system again. This is a good diet for those who want to drop the pounds in a month or two, but not for years of eating.

Customer Service is the worst
by racephoto ,Jan 26 '05
Pros: convenient
Cons: high sodium, high sugar, poor quality control, expensive, not consumer-oriented...the customer is NEVER right.
Customer service is non-existent. I had a problem with my order, (shipped a week later than it was supposed to), no replies to any emails. Then I found out that they overcharged me by $32, once again, no email response. Today I spent almost an hour on the phone just to be told they raised the price in the week I waited and they won't honor the old price! Nice!

As far as the food goes, I don't know how it can be advertised as low-glycemic......my breakfast today had 11 grams of sugar. There are other items with too much sugar. And the sodium content is high too, one day I was over 4000mg for the day. That is way too much.

Quality control leaves a bit to be desired as well, I received a lemon poppyseed muffin with mold spots and a chocolate granola bar with an unsealed wrapper. Surprisingly enough, I got no answer to THAT email either. I don't feel like sitting on hold again to address that issue, I'm sure they will do nothing about that either.

I wish I could give them zero stars, because they don't deserve a single one.

Not losing weight
by swimtothin ,Mar 15 '07
Pros: Food OK, convenience good, eating more vegetables
Cons: No weight loss, high sodium, high carb, water retention
At the end of week 1, I have not lost any weight and my daughter has only lost 1lb. We do not have a lot of weight to lose but wanted to lose about 15lbs prior to a vacation. It is extremely disappointing because we have been following the diet religiously. No one can suggest it is a lack of exercise as my daughter swims for 2 hours 6 days a week but has only lost 1lb and I have started to work out. The sodium level is very high and we believe that we are retaining fluids.

On the positive side, the food is OK, the convenience is great and we are definitely eating more vegetables, however if it simply does not work then as a diet it fails badly. Perhaps this diet works if you have a lot more weight to lose than 10-15lb? In any case, we are going to switch to the South Beach Diet for the next 4 weeks in order to lose our target lbs.

Not the greatest
by harryt62 ,Oct 04 '06
Pros: Wish I could think of one.
Cons: EXPENSIVE, bland food, not as convenient as they say.
I ordered the plan and I was not impressed. Much of the food is powdered. It is expensive and you have to buy more at the grocery store, it is not a complete plan. When I tried to cancel the autoship they kept me on hold for 1 hour and 45 minutes. When I called to order they answered in 30 seconds. I had to call for advice one time and the guy on the other end obviously did not care about me at all. He was not helpful in the least. I found the best plan I ever followed was Richard Simmons deal-a-meal or foodmover, I got it a long time ago. I am going back to it. It truly works.

NS Program
by jacobydanes ,Sep 15 '06
Pros: Quick, Easy, Good tasting
Cons: A little expensive
I started the NS system last week to loose weight. So far I like the system, the food is pretty good and very good for the busy life I lead. If you have ever been in the military, the food kind of tastes like an MRE (Meal ready to eat). Its not bad, its just small! However, that is why I am in the spot that I am in now, I have issues with leaving food on my plate!

it works but the food tastes horrible!!
by popsicle-toes ,Apr 24 '06
Pros: lose weight real fast without calculating calories or cooking
Cons: the food taste.. yuck!
In all fairness to Nutrisystem, the diet works. But in all fairness to its consumers, the food sucks!! I caved and ordered its 1 month supply with free delivery and free 1 week extra food. I kept to this diet 100% during the first week and lost 10 pounds. But the food tastes sooooo horrible I couldn't stand it anymore by the second week. I finally decided to loose weight slowly by joining my local YMCA instead. I still watch what I eat and make a conscious effort to eat healthy. I haven't lost as much weight as I had with Nutrisystem but at least I am enjoying myself more than before. This diet works if you can stomach the food till you reach your goal. Unfortunately, I'm not one to torture myself for the sake of losing weight.

NutriSystem - good for people with not so good dicipline
by aekopel ,Nov 03 '05
Pros: Good, healthy weight loss with proper portion control.
Cons: Expensive and somewhat restrictive.
I started this program only a few days ago, and I'm happy that I am doing something for myself. I had lost weight on NutriSystem in 1989-1990 and I was successful with a 45 pound loss. Now 15 years later, I need help in the weight loss area, about 40 pounds (again). So far, so good. The meals are not what I would make for myself, but this is a means to an end for me. Yes, the food seems kind of expensive, but if you break it dowm, its 11.28 per day, 3.76 per meal. How often have you gone out and eaten lunch and spent $7.00? And then get take out for 15.00? To me its worth it because it teaches you what you have to do to be healthy and have proper portions for your meals. I like that I can drink milk, eat fruit, nuts, chicken, tuna, salad dressing (whatever you choose, as long as its fat free) and veggies. Don't forget that water!!! If you do choose to follow this plan, make it work for you, but take the advise from the literature that comes with the food and you are gauranteed success!

NutriSystem: Can you say disgusting?
by lisamy ,Oct 15 '05
Pros: No thinking or cooking involved. Lost 9 pounds the first week.
Cons: Too little flavor and substance. A big waste of money!
I ordered NutriSystem on QVC. I even lost 9 pounds the first week. Only because the food was so bad that I existed off of the salad and veggies that I bought to go with their meals. I bought this product because I thought not having to think about preparing each meal would be easy. And of course, I needed to lose weight. The flavor of the food was disgusting. I did the program for 2 weeks. That's all I could stand. The entrees were mostly sauce with very little meat. That is saying quite a bit coming from me. I am not much of a meat lover anyway. After reading other testimonies, I am glad I didn't try to send the rest of the food back. It is in the trash!

Not bad...but not good
by HMMC76 ,Jan 24 '07
Pros: Proportioned, convenient, easy directions
Cons: Expensive, bad taste (especially breakfast foods)
I was thinking about doing NutriSystem after the holidays and a couple of surgeries that took me out of the gym for 2-3 months. I got a few meals from a friend to try it out and I'm glad I did. All the breakfasts that I've tasted (mostly eggs) were horrible tasting and SMALL portions. Some of the lunch and dinner entrees weren't bad tasting but they weren't delicious either. Hot cocoa was one of the desserts and you mix it with boiling water but it really doesn't dissolve. The good thing is that it's proportioned to what you're supposed to eat.

My experience with Nutrisystem...
by cranberries ,Jan 15 '07
Pros: Easy to follow program, convenience
Cons: Food is horrendously bad, overpriced, and the portions are small
Has, unfortunately, not been very positive thus far. I have only been on the plan for a few weeks now, but already regret having spent the money and wish I could go back in time and undo this costly mistake. The food (and I use that word loosely - 'food' might be too generous a term for this stuff) itself is just terrible. I mean really bad. Geez. The good news is that you certainly don't want to overeat this stuff, so the tiny tot-sized portions might actually be a blessing. After being hungry and miserable for three weeks on this diet, I have not lost a single ounce . (And yes, I work out every day *and* walk several miles a day.) I see that others seem to be having better luck with this plan than I am, so maybe it's just the wrong plan for me.

I LOVE NUTRISYSTEM!!!!
by phillmonica ,Mar 14 '07
Pros: Easy to follow plan, filling, good food, responsive service
Cons: expensive, must substitute own food and portion size when at goal.
I am 56yrs old and since 9/28/06 I have lost 37lbs.
Went from 149lbs 5ft 2in. to 112lbs. as of 3/14/07.

I find the food is very good , easy to follow plan with all your own ad ins. I am now starting maintenance and with the help of the members on the bulletin boards I can see how to sub my own food for their NS entrees. Its like anything else, If I want to stay in my size 8, I need to watch portions and WHAT I eat now! NS helped me to do this without being hungry! Very satisfied

Waste of Money
by jfrnk ,Feb 13 '06
Pros: None
Cons: Bad tasting, chemical laden, poor quality for the cost.
Can you say Sodium. Can you say preservatives. Calling this stuff food would be an insult to dog food. The dog food probably tastes better. At every meal, I felt I would rather die of being overweight than eat. So, I canceled after 11 days. I will use up the rest of the month as a punishment for my stupidity. Fortunately by following the plan, you do eat fruits and vegetables and learn some good eating habits. I found the containers difficult to open, and most of the time I either wound up with a mess on the counter or in the microwave. I have no doubt I will lose weight due to the calorie reduction but, at the cost, I can, without much effort, prepare better meals.

Easy Plan
by pweir ,Jan 13 '07
Pros: Easy, mindless, no obsessing about points
Cons: Some foods are not so great, price
I have done Weight Watchers and have had success with it - this of course prior to having children and having numerous brain cells to expend on the constant, obsessive thinking regarding points.
I love the NutriSystem plan because I eat what has been prescribed and I do not need to obsess over food. With Weight Watcher, for example, if I want a certain item throughout the course of the day I need to then "play" with my points to accommodate that certain item. Really not worth it to me.
LOVE not having to think about the food and just knowing that all I need to do is add a protein or dairy, along with salads and veggies

Revolting
by yizzy99 ,Oct 12 '05
Pros: Fast and painful weight loss
Cons: Awful taste, overpriced, little variety, bland
I ordered a month's supply of food for what seemed reasonable, $195, off of QVC. The food looked appetizing enough on TV.

Wrong! I can barely stomach the preservative stuffed styrofoam that they pass off as meals. The food is terrible, often resembling dog food with the same consistency.

The "snacks" they offer are so bland that I'd often rather go hungry than try to stomach them.

Needless to say, this was a very bad investment. Because it's through QVC, I'm stuck with this food that I'll probably stick up in my attic, food that will, after 50 years, probably still be mold free due to all of the tasty chemicals they put in it.

YUCK.

by santarosamom ,Aug 03 '06
Pros: Portion control.
Cons: Flavor, price, variety.
You're better off learning portion control. If you are on a salt restricted diet this is not for you. The food is very mediocre and bland. For $10 a day you get, as an example, oatmeal for breakfast, chicken noodle soup for lunch, pasta with chicken for dinner and soy chips for "dessert". I would have liked to have seen more international dishes. I feel Weight Watchers is a much better program.

FOOD IS DISGUSTING!
by kristinann978 ,Jan 20 '07
Pros: If you can stand the food you probably will lose weight. easy returns
Cons: Food has a horrible aftertaste.
I ordered the program last week after viewing the commercial. I thought I'd give it a try since the pre-packaged foods are effort less. The food is beyond bad...I found it nausating...the "pop tart-like substance" I tried to eat for breakfast left such a bad aftertaste that I wanted to vomit. Same thing goes with their choc granola bar. Their honey-mustard pretzels were pretty good, but I don't think they are much different than what you would buy in the store. Needless to say, I didn't make it through breakfast and the food went back.

Healthy, delicious, easy way to lose weight. The answer to my dream diet. They prepare all the food, you eat it and manage your diet via their website... totally cool, simple. It is portion controlled and they provide you with a list of other foods that you may have. I lost approximately 12pounds per month. I feel physically better, blood pressure is down, cholesterol is improved, and I sleep better at night. Sign up if you are a procrastinator, not good at preparing food, too busy to think about dieting but know that you need to lose weight.

High soy and sodium content in packaged products
by lovenyc ,Jun 27 '07
Pros: Learning portion size. Convenience~ grab and go.
Cons: High SOY and SODIUM, health concerns. Expensive. Taste for most meals, not very good.
1) If you have any health issues, be aware of the SOY content in their packaged products. Almost all products contain SOY in some form.
2) Sodium is also quite high in most products
3) Learning portion size was a plus. I did loose a few pounds.
4) Example of a breakfast food: Powered scrambled eggs. Seems like using real eggs/egg whites(or egg beaters) would be more nutritious.
5) Some packaged food taste was OK, but for the most part, I have to say it was not good.
6) The 'Nutrition Consultants' (sounds official but still don't know what that means) seem ill prepared to answer dietary questions except to order more of their product. They are quite pleasant but not well educated in dietary or nutrition.

I would not buy into this again or recommend it.

Bad Food, Worse Customer Service
by kathlea ,Oct 05 '05
Pros: No thinking required to follow the plan.
Cons: Poor quality, bad customer service, and apparent unwillingness to refund money, even when food returned.
The food is bland and basically all tastes the same. I decided to send most of it back, expecting a refund. This is when the nightmare truly began.

After waiting on hold for 40 MINUTES (!!!) I finally was able to talk to a counselor, only to be transferred to another department where I was put on hold for an additional 20 minutes. I finally got the information I needed to return the food, followed all directions to the letter, triple checked every thing, had the UPS store clerk check everything, and paid $18 to ship the stuff back. Two months later, I still haven't received my refund.

So, if you're thinking of trying this diet with the notion of sending the food back if you don't like it, I hope you have better luck than I did.

Surprisingly good
by sarabas ,Jan 18 '06
Pros: excellent dinner entrees, reasonable cost, variety
Cons: none so far
I've been on NutriSystem for a week, bought through QVC. It's the weekends off program, so I figured I'd never get bored with the same foods since I could choose my own on the weekends. I had expected to have to endure mediocre food for months until I lost my weight, but I find the food to be quite good. Especially the dinner entrees, which are much better than comparable frozen entrees available to anyone at the grocery store. I like to graze, so I tend to split up meals to eat separately (such as fruit first thing in the morning, and an hour or so later, a cereal, etc.) It seems to be working well, and I've already lost 5 lb. I'm not hungry and I look forward to dinner at night. Some foods aren't as tasty as others, but I haven't run across any that are bad tasting--and I tend to be a little picky. In regard to cost, I figure I'm probably spending more on takeout, so I'm actually saving money.

I needed a plan that gave me the healthy foods I needed but that didn't require a lot of time and prep work. This seamed like the perfect fit! I have only been on it for 7 days now but so far I'm loving it! I have lost 5 pounds and haven't even had time to exercise yet - that is just from the food! Can you say CHEAP and SODIUM Loaded
by lb31291 ,Sep 16 '05
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Cheap
The food is simply GARBAGE. I was on Jenny Craig and switched to save money. I saved money and got garbage in return. Jenny Craig has AWESOME food - all meals and snacks on Jenny Craig are incredibly good. Nitrisystem has okay dinners and the rest is just junk. And it is loaded with sodium. Nothing on Nutrisystem is fresh - everything is either dried or vacuum packed. Because they ship food in the mail with slow delivery they cannot send fresh items. What you get are TONS of preservatives, loads of sodium and dehydrated slop. Ramen noodles are better.

Nutrisystem: Positive and Negatives as with all Programs
by glimpser ,Feb 12 '06
Pros: It works well short term, and is convenient.
Cons: Too pricey @ 11 bux or more a day.
I chose to order a month's supply of the Nourish Weekends off Plan for 2 reasons:

1. I need a reprieve from handeling, shopping for, and otherwise preparing food. "Recreational" cooking stretched my appetite and my stomach. I wanted to decrease the chances of overeating as much as possible, and this seemed to be the healthiest and best way.

2. There was a deal on a major TV shopping channel that broke it down to about 9 bux a day. If I liked it, I could even have the following months' supplies mailed directly to my house.

So, no cooking 5 days a week and only shopping every other week is good. The 'taste' of most of the stuff is good. It's a no brainer, which is sometimes what I need.

However, it comes to over 11 bux a day, which is too expensive for me. There's too much sodium and the consistancy of the foods are too mushy for my likes, so this worked well for one month (I lost 15 lbs.) but not a long term option for me.

Nothing with a shelf life of two years can be good for you.
by chemoangel ,Oct 20 '06
Pros: Convenient, convenient, convenient.
Cons: Icky taste; lots of ingredients I cannot pronounce.
When I turned 39, my metabolism did that famous shift people talk about. I was pretty good about keeping my weight down and fitting into my size 6 jeans for about 5 years. Then my life turned upside down and I exercised less and ate more. I found myself about 20 pounds more than I should weigh -- or 20 pounds above my comfort weight. Okay, long story a little shorter I tried the Nutrisystems program that QVC offers. I was surprised that everything is either dehydrated or very highly preserved. I love to cook and can cook up some pretty healthy meals. And I also like really fresh ingredients. I usually go to the grocery store at least twice a week, sometimes every day. What could I possibly have been thinking? It was an impulse move and I have cancelled my auto delivery. I think I'm much better off -- and you probably are too -- to follow the food pyramid, prepare some meals on Sunday when I have the time and freeze them.

This food is really pretty bad.

NutriSystem Food Tastes Terrible
by battgirl2 ,Nov 27 '06
Pros: Convenient
Cons: Taste of Food, portion sizes
I ordered a months supply of the NutriSystem Food about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I have already lost 6 pounds, which is wonderful, but I am already planning on canceling my next order because the food is terrible!

The lunch items come in either a plastic cup or a cardboard cup. The plastic cup portions are very small. The cardboard cup items are either pasta of some kind or potatoes. These are prepared by adding boiling water and letting them sit (just like a "Cup-o-noodles"). I have yet to eat a pasta item that cooked all the way. The noodles are crunchy. The "potatoes" are either runny and lumpy or gooey. I have tried using alternate methods of "cooking" them but nothing improves the quality.

Also,I love chocolate so I was excited that they had so many chocolate options for desert. But that excitement faded fast when I tasted them. The Chocolate Almond cookie has a very grainy texture. The Chocolate Macadamia Nut Biscotti has very little flavor and is also grainy.

I am very dissapointed with this diet program. I would never reccomend this diet to anyone because of the poor taste of the food.

Not very tasty
by csmveg ,May 29 '07
Pros: Easy and you don't have to think about meals.
Cons: Much of the food had was not edible.
I am a vegetarian, NutriSystem has a lot of work to do on their vegetarian food, especially their dinners. I guess it helps you lose weight because I threw many of the dinners out half eaten. But then I ate other food because I was hungry so didn't lose as much weight as I hoped. The breakfast and lunches were okay. I do eat eggs and cheese.

The portions are small so you need some time to get used to that. You are allowed veggies and some fruit.

Be very careful ordering. I was having difficulty with their site trying to select certain foods, it was not responding well so it took awhile. Several times I received non decipherable pages. I finally was able to order and did not pay attention and by mistake apparently selected the auto ship (and it was not based on the price I saw, I expected to pay $323) so I was just not paying attention. I was surprised today when a box showed up on my doorstep. I am sending it back. With the bad dinners, this plan is not worth it.

NutriSystem works if you stick to it
by happy240 ,Mar 12 '07
Pros: The plan works you will loose weight
Cons: expensive, food is ok, and will get sick of it after a few months
I started the 28 day plan 13 days ago and have already lost 11 pounds. I have a 40 pound goal. so I am on my way. I got the 28 day variety pack. I like all of the breakfasts, lunches and snacks (except the chocolate dispite what everyone has said its gross) the dinners on the other hand have been just ok, they remind me of chef boy ordee in a can. Some of them have been good. Adding the fruits and veggies helps and drinking the water. For me I use a teaspoon of peanut butter as my fat serving and that gets me through when I am craving something. I plan to stick with it, although I can see getting sick of the food after a few months.

Can this be legally classified as food?
by totalexploit ,Feb 21 '06
Pros: There aren't any.
Cons: Chemical taste, unpalatable (and that is being kind).
After reading this site, I sent for the Nutrisystem program. I dragged the 41 pound box into my house and could not believe how awful the food was. Think of cardboard and weird chemical tastes and maybe you could imagine this. I decided to return this as I was still queasy at 10AM after having their apple cinnamon oatmeal.

Everybody, know this, it costs almost $20.00 to ship it back and is very hard to pick up!

Please don't get this diet. I shudder to think of how people are damaging their bodies with this. You might as well just drink protein powder with water.

Keep your money. Jenny Craig is at least edible even if it also is highly processed.

by steph7694 ,Jul 26 '06
Pros: Convenience, ease of preparation, delivered right to your door, needs no refrigeration
Cons: Cost, Lack of variety, you still need to buy groceries in addition to the plan
Nutrisystem is convenient, true, but as a vegetarian, the options were very limited. I quickly got tired of eating the same handful of foods over, and over, again. Also, it is much pricier than you would expect, considering that you still need to spend a good amount on groceries, i.e. produce and other protein sources, to go with the plan. I'd say to stick with SlimFast or Weight Watchers.

NutriSystem not for everyone, but it does work
by hilopup ,Sep 29 '07
Pros: 1)Convenient, 2) Easy to follow, 3) Private, 4) Easy to eat/prepare meals, 5) It works!
Cons: 1)Expensive, 2)Bland, 3)Boring, 4)Too much at once
I've been on the plan twice and have lost weight. Probably would have lost the same weight if I had eaten diet foods from the local market. NutriSystem is convenient for those who can stick to a routine, don't have a lifestyle where you dine out or entertain a lot and are very good at resisting temptation. The first time I was on the plan, I was single and it was a snap. I was always on the move and eating was no big deal. The second time was much harder and less successful because I was in a relationship, spent more time at home, the other person was not on the plan and it was very difficult to cook for him and not want to taste / share in the meals. I've found that I can lose the weight and keep it off by just eating some of the healthy frozen dinners available everywhere these days and, with that approach, I also am able to decide immediately what I want versus having to select a full month of NutriSystem foods in advance and then find myself getting sick of a particular meal that I'm stuck with.

FOOD OK>>>VERY EASY TO FOLLOW
by twinsmom92005 ,Jul 06 '06
Pros: Easy, convenient, fills you up
Cons: salty, costly
I got the package about a week ago in the mail. The foods so far have been pretty good..although high in sodium. This is not good if you have high blood pressure or kidney problems. The diet is very easy to follow. It does teach good eating habits and portion control. I have not lost anything yet because I have been cheating at night due to impulse eating. If you stretch out the meals throughout the day..you will not be hungry. Me, I stay up late and eat out of boredom.

This is very easy for me to follow. i am an RN and have 3 kids(set of twins) so life is very hectic. I just pop in the meal and eat it whenever.

Im going to stick to this and I will update you on the progress.

Ordered 28 days ago: Never received
by cardijake ,Feb 26 '07
Pros: none
Cons: never received
Today is Feb. 25. I order the month's supply of food on Jan 28 and have still not received my order. I sent an email and received a reply that emails will be answered in 3 days. I have called several times and after my LONG (at times it has been at least 25 minutes!) session on hold I am told that the order was shipped and I should receive it soon. WHAT??? Won't the food be rotten by now?

Good starting point, but Jenny Craig WAY better
by sarah231 ,Jul 05 '06
Pros: None of the foods are frozen, so you only need pantry space, not freezer space.
Cons: Marginal food and you must buy more perishables than what's reasonable for the cost
I've used the Jenny Craig system twice. Losing 15 pounds both times (my goal) and actually learned to keep it off the 2nd time - for 2 years now.

Then recently, because my husband wanted to lose some weight and wasn't up to going to a weekly JC consultation, we gave Nutrisystem a go. (He wanted to lose 20 pounds. And I could certainly stand to lose another 5 or so, sooo...)
Here's the rundown: If this is your first pre-packaged diet and you absolutely positively cannot make the journey to a Jenny Craig center, then this system is great. (Mainly teaches you portion control)
But, in comparison to Jenny Craig, the food is absolutely abysmal. Jellied-like beef, loads of reconstituting stuff. (adding water to egg powder for scrambled eggs and bean powder for beans and rice. Yish.) Entrees served in a POOL of runny sauces.
But, again, if you can't do JC, then stick with this system - it is tolerable. And it'll definitely do the trick.
But, if you CAN make it to a JC center - then I highly recommend that route - for about $10 more per week, you get REAL, identifiable food.

Terrible food
by timandcristina ,Jul 08 '07
Pros: Easy to follow plan.
Cons: The food is poor. Cost is high considering the quality of the food products.
Purchased in April 07 on the 'qvc' special, 28 day-weekends off plan. Most of the food was very low quality and hard to stomach. I returned the unused portions for a full refund(thank you, qvc - they were great about it). The chocolates were grainy and cheap, and most of the entrees were about the same quality as Chef Boyardee. Pasty pasta, bitter/acidic tomato sauces, strange looking formed meats, and so on. The only items that were 'ok' were the breakfast cereals (which you can substitute Kashi Go-Lean or a similar cereal) and the meal bars (again, bars like Zone and Balance are probably better tasting substitutes). FORGET about the soups and stews (gel-like consistency).
The plan itself is easy to follow (if you can take the food).
IF you are the type of person that enjoys whole foods and enjoys cooking, this is not for you. Even Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, and WW meals are MUCH better quality than Nutri-System (and cost less).

LOVE THIS DIET!
by sweetave ,Jun 06 '05
Pros: Easy to follow diet. You don't get hungry. Variety. Healthy.
Cons: None
Hi. This diet is great. I have so much more energy and just see & feel the physical difference. I've tried the Atkins diet and it was very time consuming & boring as far as options of food to eat for myself. If you want to join Nutrisystem I can email you a $15 off coupon before you join. Or any questions you can email me at sweetave@hotmail.com.

absolutely awful food
by christinarn ,Jul 21 '07
Pros: packed with protein
Cons: disgusting food, expensive
I had really high hopes for the Nutrisystem program but I could not have possibly received the same program of food as the people who say it's great. Nearly all of the food is visually unappealing and tastes disgusting. Eating slop out of a plastic package gets old fast- like in about a week. It is not a complete diet and you still have to supplement fresh foods like vegetables, fruit and dairy or you will never come close to eating a healthy diet.
I received two shipments (over $600.00) and many of the foods I requested were substituted with foods that I would never order or am allergic to. They would not take the food back after six weeks so I gave some away and tossed the rest. Even a food bank said no thank you.
Kudos to Nutrisystem for the slick marketing and advertising- no doubt the cause of the exorbitant price of the food. They are very good at that if anything.
The lesson learned for me? There is no magic and really nothing better than a healthy diet- protein, carbs, fruits and vegetables- normal portions sizes and a daily dose of exercise.

Highly Recommended
by hesterific ,May 04 '07
Pros: anonymous, brainless, good food, easy to order, easy to stay on track
Cons: Don't order the Favorites. Take the time to pick items that sound good to you.
I have used NutriSystem twice over the past 3 years and will continue using it when my weight fluctuates. The first time I lost 52 pounds in 22 weeks with very little effort and minimal exercise. The second time I went on it was for a wedding. I ordered my bride's maid dress two sizes too small on purpose and by the time I received the dress it was too big. I recently was involved in a car accident and have put on a couple of pounds so I am eating some leftover food that I have. In three days I'm down 3 pounds. It's not just portion control or low calorie that is causing the weight to come off; it's the low glycemic indexing that is preventing insulin spikes. Insulin, in addition to metabolizing sugar, tells your body to store fat. I recommend doing some research on the glycemic index. It may surprise you to learn that Fruit Loops are better for you than Cheerios are.

Nutrisystem is NOT good for you!!
by dlombard23 ,Sep 26 '07
Pros: See above
Cons: See above
After several months of researching this product I decided to void everyone else's opinions and try it out for myself. I have found nothing good about this product other than convenience and would not recommend it to anyone. Here is what I found:

1. They replaced what food I actually ordered to what they had in stock-without notifying me.
2. I found only the soups to be edible. I would rather starve to death than eat any of the other items.
3. All of the food is extremely high in sodium and carbs. I felt bloated the entire time and was drinking plenty of water so the combination was bad.
4. The portions are ridiculous for a grown adult and you still have to purchase other foods (which are actually healthy for you) as well.

My opinion-do not waste your money on this program. If you can get self will power and motivation you can do this program on your own with fresh nutritious foods and not processed items. Even Jenny Craig has some items that need to be frozen or refrigerated but Nutrisystem does not. That should say something itself.

Set aside some NEW CLOTHES money!!
by socal_stef ,May 04 '07
Pros: ABSOLUTELY WORKS!! Makes you feel great physically and mentally! No cravings. Convenient.
Cons: Tastes same after awhile, lots of water to drink but worth the metabolizing effects.
I have lost 7 pounds in 3 and a half weeks! I have not exercised one bit, although you'll rarely find me lounging around. Stick to the plan and it can work for anyone. I have been at 143 lbs for so long and NO diet has helped but this one. I have another 7-10 to go until I have that supermodel body I want! So spend the money...it's really not that expensive if you stop and think about it. You aren't spending money at the restaurants and going out to eat, and you still have to buy groceries. It's worth every penny! PS-The pizza is my favorite-

Worst food ever!
by cathyjack ,Sep 21 '07
Pros: None
Cons: Terrible taste, very expensive
I ordered the Nutrisystem Nourish Womens program and tried it for 3 grueling days. Strawberry pastry, Minestrone Soup, Cranberry Pastry, Meatloaf w/potatoes were some of the foods I tried. I have never tasted anything so terrible in my life! I had my whole family just try it and it was unanimous, inedible! Never again. What a shame to take people's hard earned money for such "food" if that's what you want to call it. And a portion that would my my grandbaby ask for more.
Weight Watchers will be the way I go. That's more of a way of life than this. If I had to eat this way for very long I'm sure I'd be thin, I'd rather do without!
The cost for a cup of soup was $4-$5 and more. I work too hard for my money to pay this kind of price for something like this.

Nutri System Wants Your Money Not Your Feedback
by tagalongmeitu ,Feb 28 '08
Pros: You lose weight, because you stop eating. Their expensive, dried food tastes horrible.
Cons: Over priced, profit orientated company. They are a shipping warehouse unconcerned about the individual.
This was the worst experience with diet foods. All foods are dried which wouldn't be so bad except their sauces, tomato etc. have no taste. They are expensive and they send you their free foods of their choice, not yours. I had returned foods from my first batch that I could not eat and guess what, they were shipped again to me with the second batch. The refund for the foods I mailed back was "pro-rated". This means that you don't get a full refund and you still paid for the shipping costs. They will not give you free foods that you can eat (doctor's orders.) Their system isn't set up for that. Their system is not set up to keep track of what you can eat they just batch mail you free food that no one else wants. So you get this bad stuff over & over. I quit the program after receiving my second shipment. Lean Cusine is a much better choice and the food taste's good.

Nutrisystem really works.
by healthgal ,Sep 23 '07
Pros: Nutrisystem has a variety of healthy meals that help you loose weight without depriving yourself.
Cons: Nutrisystem is costly but worth it.
I have tried many diets to try and cut down on carbs. Nutrisystem is the first one that does not leave me hungry after meals. The best part is that Nutrisystem food actually tastes good. I eat like I want to and still loose weight. I have been on it for 4 months and am still not sick of it. I can see myself eating Nutrisystem forever.

Loving this Program - $15 Coupon Available!
by achubbychic ,Jul 14 '06
Pros: Convenient, easy to pack and tastes great!
Cons: A little pricey; email me for a $15 coupon code: achubbychic@yahoo.com (include your email address)
I've been in the program for one week now. I've found the food to be delicious and filling. 99% of the food is stuff I wouldn't mind eating even if I wasn't dieting!

Of course, if you're the kind of person who needs everything made fresh, and despise the thought of canned-type foods, this may not be for you. I, on the other hand, love nothing more than a can of Chef-Boyardee, so this program was a step up for me in the cuisine department.

In addition to the food, you get numerous salad, dairy and fruit-related snacks (that you purchase on your own.) Between the NS food and this, you never go hungry. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't feel like you just ate a Supersized Value meal, but it is more than enough to sustain you to the next one.

Overall, you can't beat the convenience, but it comes at a bit of a price. But if you eat out a lot now, you really don't spend too much more. I have a $15 coupon code I can give you if you're interested. Just email me at achubbychic@yahoo.com . (Include your email address)

Hold the hair!
by jmseee7 ,Jul 29 '08
Pros: One to two minutes in the microwave for the dinners and they're ready to go.
Cons: Hair found in two of the dishes.
I purchased a 30-day supply of Nutrisystem food, most of it was okay. Nothing out of this world. I found a hair in one of the Mushroom Gravy Steak dishes, and I just found another hair that was baked into my Lemon Noodles with Chicken dinner. Thanks anyway, I'll try another plan. The remaining food is going in the trash.

Could be good but it's not
by epiphany319 ,Jul 26 '08
Pros: Convenience but that is about it. If they would fulfill order it would be do-able
Cons: The taste, the cost, and consistent unwanted substitutions in your orders. Don't even try.
Most of the food tastes awful, it's expensive, and I have very rarely gotten what I ordered. It's usually substituted with some even more awful crap.

If they would plow some money into the company and improve products and delivery they could make a decent profit. I guess it's easier to hire "celebrities" to sell this stuff.

I suggest you try another way to lose weight.

run, don't walk from Nutrisystems
by hollanjs ,Sep 30 '08
Pros: I have nothing to say that is positive..oh yes, My cat liked their cookies
Cons: super garbage, a product to be kept far away from my and your front door.
If ever I encountered a restaurant where most of the food is breaded, I raced for the nearest exit. I wondered what was under all that bread...Same with Nutrisystems. Just what is in all of those packages I continued to open, hoping for something edible. It is amazing that they get away with the BS they hand out.
I tried their 6 week system. At the end of the period, I weighed exactly three pounds more than when I began to eat the myssterious unrecognizable tastelesss garbage they sent.
Considering the amount of televison advertising they do, there must be some truth to the saying that there is a sucker born every minute. Don't you be one of them.

Works if you have no sense of taste
by mledre ,Jul 28 '05
Pros: it sounds like an easy, pain-free way to lose weight
Cons: I'd rather starve myself than eat this food.
I have just received my first box of nutrisystem food in the mail, so this is my first week trying it. So far the only decent thing in there is the cereal. This food is so awful I can't believe they stay in business. The snacks taste like cardboard, the casseroles look like something that came up from yesterday's dinner, the soups might as well be just boiled water, and I could go on and on. I cannot believe they put this crap in a package and actually send it to people--for a profit!!! Unreal if you ask me. It's way to expensive to taste so bad. Although I cannot really say whether it will help me lose weight or not, I'm pretty confident it will, because I take a bite of the food and suddenly lose my appetite.

Not a good diet
by eddie4521 ,Oct 05 '07
Pros: A person could lose weight on any diet that starved you.
Cons: The food taste terrible. Don't waste your money.
This diet is the worst I have ever tried. The food taste terrible with the exception of a few items. The portions required are so small I was hungry all the time. The first week I lost 3 lbs.. Some years ago I lost 6 lbs. on Atkins in the same amount of time. At the end of two weeks I could take it no longer. I am now feeding the rest to the dog, at least the ones he will eat.

Disgusting food
by doppess ,Jun 24 '09
Pros: Great online community through their website.
Cons: Bad food at a high price.
Nutrisystem food is absolutely disgusting. I was on the program for 4 days and yes I lost weight, mostly because I dreaded meal times. The dinner meals entrees are mostly gravy which is sticky and tastes like paste. The dehydreated meals are equally unappetizing. The little cans of Cheese Tortellini are mostly a sweet chunk tomato sauce and the tortellini is filled with chalky soy cheese. Snack bars and lunch bars use soy powder, brown rice syrup, and chocolate flavoring so it's like eating a chewy sawdust block dipped in brown wax. When you look at the calorie and carb content of the itty bitty portions, you quickly realize that you can cook real food that is better tasting and more nurtitious. The calories and carbs in any of the bars are about the same as a small Snickers ... I would rather have the Snickers. I was on the Diabetic plan and my blood sugars were higher than they have ever been. The food was so repulsive that I sent it all back and am waiting for a refund. I was never so relieved to be eating salads and chicken broth again!

Return product with caution
by valerie2009New Member ,Dec 14 '09
Pros: Easy plan to follow.
Cons: Food quality & customer service
My husband and I did the plan for 2 months and we both lost weight but after 2 months we couldn't stand the food any more.  However, he really liked their oatmeal, so I was ordering 60 of the oatmeal at a time.  The third time I ordered, my husband made the oatmeal and he said it tasted terrible!.  They had changed their formulation and now it was no different than Quaker oatmeal.  I returned all 60 that I originally ordered (they overshipped by one) and they only gave me credit for 23.  I have been fighting with them for over 6 months and they still refuse to acknowledge that I returned all 60.  I'm out $83 and many hours of my time.  Obviously their employees don't know how to count.  RETURN WITH CAUTION...  Also, they refuse to deal with problems.  I had called and asked to talk to a supervisor and they wouldn't let me.  They said someone would call me back, but no one ever did.

Caution to potential Nutrisystem customers!
by indierock42 ,Jun 03 '09
Pros: The food is easy to prepare.
Cons: There is so much sodium in the food.
Becareful when ordering Nutrisystem!!! I recieved I frozen food order to the amount of $130 that I never ordered. Since the food is frozen Nutrisystem will not allow me to return it. I'm a vegetarian and I'm on the vegetarian plan, the majority of the food I received is meat and I can therefore not eat it. The Nutrisystem representatives said they could do nothing for me so I canceled all my future orders with them. I'd be willing to stick with the food if I didn't think the company was just after my money. What happened to customer service?

by mycherona ,Nov 19 '09
Pros: lose weight fast be able to keep it off after with the portioning skills learned
Cons: They now have frozen food, you can't get it ala carte without purchasing a package
I started Nutrisystem Oct. 26, 2009, It is very easy to follow and I feel great! In the short time I have been on this diet I have lost 8 pounds! I do exercise 5 days a week and add in 2 days of cardio just to speed up the process. I saw what people are saying about the food and I personally think it is good, somethings I don't like but I get to choose if I order them again. People have to realize when you are eating diet food, it is not going to be the best food you ever ate otherwise it wouldn't be diet food and you wouldn't lose any weight. When you are ready to lose weight YOU ARE READY no matter what the taste is. The food is definitely not horrible, I say try it out you will feel great and look great!

OK taste, but I won't miss it
Frozen meals were not delivered on time--extremely inconvienent during the summer. Then two weeks ago when I cancelled the next order, someone at Nutrisystem assured me everything had been handled and I would receive a refund. I've called at least four times, but have not received that refund and UPS left another cooler on my porch this morning.

LOVED IT!!!
by superchick773 ,Feb 02 '09
Pros: Tasty, easy, quick & works
Cons: Food got boring after a good 5 months.
I loved Nutrisystem!  I stuck to the program but, I still have treats on Halloween, Thanksgiving and so on.  I lost an average of 10 pounds per month and on the months that I was consistent on work out sessions I lost 13 pounds.  It is a great program and they send bears for every ten pounds that you lose, that was so much motivation.  I would debate cheating but, I would see my bears that I earned so far and thought about how much I wanted that next bear, then I would not cheat.

I lost a total of 60 pounds in 6 months.

Toxic box of food
by ladykiss ,Sep 08 '08
Pros: No thinking involved, pre portioned

Cons: the most vile, "un nourishing, un-food" since Tang, Velveeta, Ranch Sauce Chips, and Wonderbread.
I tried nutrisystem for a month, the food is crap, it's overflavoured
salted, garbage, and it's filled with additives. You may as well dip some cardboard in Splenda, or Salt, or MSG and tomato sauce, and there you have it. Your food. I felt like a four year old on espresso for the whole month, jittery, headachy anxious.
