John James Audubon was a curious 18-year-old in the autumn of 1804, recently arrived in Pennsylvania from his native Haiti and consumed with the question of whether birds returned to the same nests after disappearing for the winter. What birds did in the winter was not yet known, and many scientists assumed that they hibernated like bears in hollow logs. Pioneering bird-banding in North America, Audubon tied a silver thread around the leg of a phoebe, soon proving that the bird did indeed return to the very same nest in the spring. Melissa Sweet's delicate watercolor-and-collage illustrations bring the text to vivid life. A Junior Library Guild Selection. |
