Hungry Mind Review: "In Paris Orwell was trying to write fiction, but what survived is a marvellous, hallucinated essay on the life of a dishwasher. This engrossing, cheerful, steely look at the edge of starvation--Orwell's own starvation--takes place in a city which you have to remind yourself is the Paris of Hemingway and Fitzgerald...." |

The rue du Coq d'Or, Paris, seven in the morning. A succession of furious, choking yells from the street. Madame Monce, who kept the little hotel opposite mine, had come out on to the pavement to address a lodger on the third floor. Her bare feet were stuck into sabots and her grey hair was streaming down. |

Orwell vividly and movingly details his experience of appalling poverty and hardship while he struggles to become a writer. Orwell spent nearly two years toiling in the revolting kitchens of the chic Hotel Lotti on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris--years in which he developed a loathing for the very rich. This period is the heart of the book: the tamer London episodes were added later, to make a thicker and more impressive manuscript. Initially rejected by T.S.Eliot at Faber & Faber, DOWN AND OUT IN PARIS AND LONDON was first published in 1933--Orwell's first published book. |
